Hi. I am a newly minted college graduate, and
I'm currently working in the dead-end job that
I got to support myself through school. It sucks, but
there's no dress code what so ever, and I can have
as many haircolors as I want. However, since I'd like
to eventually use my degree, I'm looking for something
a bit more professional.
Enter variable #2. I have had various hair colors over
the past five years. Currently, I have a very tame black
bob with bang, but it's screaming to be dyed. Here are
the two options I've been considering:
1. Dye just the ends blue, and figure out some way to
hide them for work if/when I get another job
2. Wait until I've landed something else and then
dye my hair. Has anyone done this successfully?
It may be helpful to mention that my degree is in English
(as if I haven't already said that a million times), so the
job I'd be looking for would be in a editorial or publishing
line of work. I know it's generally unrecommended to
do something so blatantly rebellious, what I want to
know is if anyone's tried it and had it work for them.

I usually look at the other employees before I say yes to a job. If it
looks like a pretty laid back environment, I wait until I've had the job
for a couple of months and everyone knows that I'm the resident "odd"
one. Then, depending on the surrounding people, I either just do and
take note of the reactions, or I mention it to my boss to give a heads
up. It's never failed yet. I've only once had to stay with natural-ish
hair for the length of the job.

i agree with marque that maybe a heads up would be good because of the
current job market as well as just testing the waters.

i've been in rather conservative companies and some no so conservative and
have dyed my hair funny colors. the conservative ones i made the color
less drastic (black with ultraviolet streaks)and hid it by keeping my hair
pulled back.

at my current work place there are others with way more
outrageous hair. i even interviewed with my hair blue/purple as well as
cisco and other places despite the fact i was going in there after being
laid off. i basically took the attitude "my hair isn't my ability" and i
got job offers right and left when before i had a difficult time.

so it is possible to do it, but given your newly graduated
state, i would wait and find a job so you can test out the waters. plus it
will possibly make it easier to find a job. you really do need to prove
yourself for the first few years/first job.

Dye your hair how you want and go to your job interview. if they tell you
they dont accept that color of hair, then tell them youll gladley sacrifice
your hair color for employmet at there company, it will make you seem
willing to do anything to get the job and will more than likly impress them.

Eternal, it worked for me!

Actually, I'm looking into corporate jobs for after college as well, and
I've been told that this is the wrong way to go. I'm planning on dying
my hair with MP Ebony (yay for temp. black) until I find out whether or
not the jobs I'm applying to are freak-friendly or not. I'm suspecting
that they might be, but the only advice I've had from other graduates
are that interviews can be fairly conservative, even if the workplace
isn't. People I know also tell me that I might have an edge as an "artsy
person" with colored hair, but none of those people speak from any
experience, so I don't really trust them. :)

Damn this career vs. hair situation.

Well, thanks for all the advice everyone. I'm going to stick with straight
black for now, since I have no experience in the field. And it's hard enough to
get a job with an English degree.
But when grad school comes around....
Oh yeah, blue hair down to my ass!

I asked them when I changed jobs earlier this year! Both asked for smart
office wear which I comply with but my old job did'nt give a monkeys about
my hair hence me getting extentions and having weird colours etc. Peircings
they were a bit iffy with but I sorted them out! When I went for the
interveiw for my current job I asked them about peircings and they said they
were fine about them and when I started work for them I just dyed my hair
with green streaks (It was blonde before then so would have been easy to get
rid of!) then purple but because I'd wanted plastic hair for ages I just
asked my boss before I got it done because there was no way I was wasting
£200 for a hairdo to have my employers saying take it out or youre fired
(which they couldnt do in anyway) so If I were you just ask in the
interveiw! :)

I disagree. First, because coming to a job looking unprofessional, but
saying you'll change is not a good idea. If you can't be bothered to
change for the interview, why would you bother to change once you're
hired? You want to come looking your very best. Also, wacky hair can
prejudice an interviewer against you, which won't help your job hunt.

That's the worst advice I've ever seen.

Generally, tone down as much as you can, then, after you're there, try
to work your favourite hair colours in.

I've done interviews that way, and within a few months of jobs, have
always been told that I could do whatever I wanted with my hair, as my
work was that damned good.

^_^

Go in to impress. Some people may not even let you get to the point to
say "you'll sacrifice the hair colour," so why cut your legs out from
underneath yourself? First impressions are important.

I don't really notice what other people wear in general, but I do
remember interviewing someone at an old company. She was wearing a
white t-shirt and blue jeans. I was taken aback, mostly because she
looked as if she didn't care at all. She was wearing clothes I
wouldn't even wear to clean my house, to a job interview. My boss, who
also didn't ever care what people wore, noticed this and commented.
She could have been the best person we'd ever seen, but we were *so*
taken aback by the way she was dressed, we were thinking about that
more than what she had to say.

It just looked as if she didn't care/didn't take us seriously.

And while *I* would be inclined to hire someone who had pretty blue
hair, a lot of people aren't.

Unfortunate, but true.

It's a good idea. I work in a video store with a "no freak" dress
code. This sucked because all the females there are avid hair dyers. I
keep mine red if I'm dying. I get it from the grocery store so it
-must- be natural, right? ;) If I hadn't messed up and had used the
full two bottles it'd look like a very very bright red that looks
great and makes everyone ask if it's natural before giggling ;)

Most definitely. I hired people at a couple places I've worked at.

When people came in looking hopelessly unprofessional (e.g., wearing
sweatshirts and stretch pants to interview for positions that required
business casual at the very least), did I ask, "Are you willing to not dress
like a slob if you're hired?"

Hell, no. I looked at them as they came in, immediately checked off the
little box in my mind that said "person has no clue how to dress for an
interview and/or would not fit into the professional atmosphere here" and
pretty much wrote them off immediately.

Unfair? Probably. Reality? Yes.

you're selling yourself at a job interview, not just your resume.
sure, "purple hair isn't -me-!", but it says things about you. you
know what people are looking for when they interview. having blue hair
or stretch pants is an obvious snubbing -or- it's you trying to make a
point and an interview isn't really the place. the interviewer doesn't
know you, doesn't particuarliy care to know you yet and is trying to
fill a hole, not say "wow! what a great point they're making with
their hair!"

I'd suggest holding off on dying your hair until after you get a job.
Depending on company and field, it may be OK after you've been working
for a couple months and have established yourself. If you're working
behind the scenes, on the phone, etc. you're more likely to be able to
be funky. If you're the receptionist, they'll care more about looking
"normal." You can always talk to the personnel office where you're
looking to see what kinds of policies they have.

As a secretary I've been both allowed and disallowed from having funky
hair. I stayed within normal colors, but unnatural tones. So, clearly
unnatural screaming red hair was OK, as was deep burgandy, but not blue
or green. When you interview, scope out the employees. If there are
smatterings of funky employees, you'll be good. If everyone is really
straightlaced, it could be a problem.

I have to agree. What gets you in the door is your experience,
your ability to be articulate, and your professionalism....
*NOT* your desperation. in the real world, people don't hire
you just because you need a job.

please don't try this at home, kids. yeesh. maybe it worked

LOL..how timely. I have an english degree and am currently
looking for another job. Don't be discouraged...there are jobs
out there.

I also just dyed my hair Pimpin Purple in the front. For
interviews I plan on wearing a wig and checking out the companies
and their dress code. Even in conservative companies you see more
and more "alternative" looks (for want of a better word) esp. in
the computer and communications departments. Good luck!

Definately. As I said in previous post, I plan on wearing a wig
(conservative black bob). For interviews, always always go
conservative. But this doesn't mean unstylish.

This us basically my interview uniform: A nice dark colored
fitted two piece suit, neutral nails and lips, minimal jewelry
(maybe an unsual, antique piece - nothing cheap or plastic), nice
shoes...try not to go in cheap ones and it's easy to tell a cheap
pair of shoes.

half the decision to hire you is made right when you walk in the
door before you can say a word. I can't reiterate enough (along
with everyone else) how wrong Eternal's advice is (sorry
dear..but that's reality for the professional world).

I'd be afraid that they might not bother to even tell you they don't like
the colour, just give you the brush off and never give you the chance to say
"I'll change! I'll change!" I'd go to the interview as a muggle, and then
spread your colourful wings after they've had time to realize that you're a
valuable employee.

Um.....no. Not really. I would suggest *not* doing this.

I'm sorry, this probably is not what you want to hear, nor is it
necessarily politically correct, or fair, but going in to an interview
in the corporate world with unusual hair color and telling them you'll
be willing to change it is not your best answer.

You don't really know how the initial interviewer will see this. It's
possible they would tell you your haircolor did not fit their corporate
image or dress code and ask you if you would change it, but it's more
likely that unusual hair color could go against you (especially if you
don't have extensive qualifications to begin with) and you might find
yourself out of the running early on. No sense giving them something to
possibly react negatively to - which some people do to unusually colored
hair. A more natural color will not be an issue. It's quite likely the
person you actually end up working for will not be as conservative as
the person doing the interviews anyway.

IMO (both as the one doing the hiring and the one wishing to be hired)
it is far more productive to go into interviews dressed appropriately
and with a reasonably natural hair color. You'll find out soon enough
if the company culture is one that allows for self-expression in dress
or haircolor, and how much is acceptable - a good way to do this is to
ask for a tour of the area you'd likely be working in. This usually
gives you a pretty good idea of how far you'll be able to push the
envelope in terms of dress (and if you'll fit in comfortably).

For instance, I have an interview tomorrow at a firm I really want to
work for. My freshly colored hair is a shade or two more natural than
usual - if I get the position, I can always go brighter red gradually.
I enjoy interesting haircolors, but paying the bills and food on the
table comes first.

Good luck on your interviews, Christy!

(which they couldnt do in anyway) so If I were you just ask in the
interveiw! :)

I have to agree. What gets you in the door is your experience,

your ability to be articulate, and your professionalism....
*NOT* your desperation. in the real world, people don't hire
you just because you need a job.

please don't try this at home, kids. yeesh. maybe it worked
for one person, but I'd call that a definite fluke.

Unfair? Probably. Reality? Yes.

Unfortunate, but true.

under.)

It's a good idea. I work in a video store with a "no freak" dress

code. This sucked because all the females there are avid hair dyers. I
keep mine red if I'm dying. I get it from the grocery store so it
-must- be natural, right? ;) If I hadn't messed up and had used the
full two bottles it'd look like a very very bright red that looks
great and makes everyone ask if it's natural before giggling ;)

i agree with marque that maybe a heads up would be good because of the
current job market as well as just testing the waters.

i've been in rather conservative companies and some no so conservative and
have dyed my hair funny colors. the conservative ones i made the color
less drastic (black with ultraviolet streaks)and hid it by keeping my hair
pulled back.

at my current work place there are others with way more
outrageous hair. i even interviewed with my hair blue/purple as well as
cisco and other places despite the fact i was going in there after being
laid off. i basically took the attitude "my hair isn't my ability" and i
got job offers right and left when before i had a difficult time.

so it is possible to do it, but given your newly graduated
state, i would wait and find a job so you can test out the waters. plus it
will possibly make it easier to find a job. you really do need to prove
yourself for the first few years/first job.
