And I now have an opportunity to persue that fantasy... kinda.
See, my hubbi signed up for a video editing class at a local community
access tv station[1]. One of the requirements of this class is that
students make a 1/2 hr show for the station to air. The station gets free
content, & lets the students rent the video editing studios cheaply for
their own projects (in addition to the required tv show).
So..... my hubbi suggested that they produce a tv show with me -- the
Gothic Martha Stewart Show[2]! They'd handle the whole production end,
I'd produce the content & be in front of the camera. I could do anything I
want in the confines of the studio. The studio itself has a super-basic
set w/just a plain backdrop. They will learn some camera & editing
effects in the class, so we can have titles, fades, etc. But that's about
all that will be provided. Everything else, we need to bring. They want
to do it in mid to late September too!
This is where a.g.f comes in. Seeing as everyone here would be my target
audience[3], p'raps you could help me out. What would you most want to see
on a home/lifefstyle tv show devoted to goths & other freaky types[4]?
Craft how tos? Entertaining & cooking demos? Making clothing &
accessories? Home decorating tips & projects? I want to cover all of
these, but for one 1/2 hour show, I may need to narrow down. Plus, I don't
have much time to create all the props & demo projects.
I'd love to interview a guest artisan too, if I can get s'one in this
short of a time frame. What kind of guest(s) would you all be interested
in? Clothing designers? Ppl who create gothy home crafts? Do
recognizable names matter? Or would anyone who's articulate & creates
pretty things be ok? What about more mainstream artisans who's work would
appeal to a gothy/freaky audience, but who aren't gothy/freaky themselves?
I'm also considering an on-location field trip that would be edited in
later. IIRC, the studio has cameras you can lease for a wknd, or we could
use our home video camera (tho' not as good quality). Could be s'thing as
simple as going to a fabric store, thrift store, or antiques fair &
showing how to find good deals & what items are easily gothable. Could go
to a historical place like the Lace Museum or one of the many historic
houses on display in the bay area, & talk about how to incorperate
historical touches into a modern home. Could even go to our home & show
how I achieved a vaguely medieval dungeon look on the cheap. But what
would you find most interesting?
Geez, there's so much to do! Not only do I have to create the content, I
need to dress that set. My hubbi can help me make/find/buy stuff, but I
have to plan it all out. That studio is *really* plain. I'm thinking I
need some kind of better backdrop, plus chairs for me & guests & a table
to do demos on. I want to make it look as gorgeous as possible in order to
carry the theme thru & really create a gothic ambience. Any cheap, fast,
& dirty set design tips or suggestions from the TheaterGoths out there?
Omigawd, what will I wear??? I want to be GAF, but it needs to be a
somewhat practical outfit, since I'll be hot-gluing or playing w/food in
it. I'll prob. have to change in the studio's tiny restroom, immediatly
after lugging props & stuff & right before we shoot. We'll get only one
night to film, so I don't want to waste time primping. Arrrgggghhhhh!!!!
I'm terribly excited about this. I want to make it the very best
embodiment of my idea as possible. It could lead to bigger things, tho',
of course, it could also just end up as another dusty videotape on the
shelf for years to come. I just want to *try* as hard as I can. This is
such a crazy lil' chance. I want to milk it for all it's worth, and I'd be
extremely grateful for any help or suggestions from a.g.f. If, in the
extremely faint chance I do make s'thing grand of this, I'll owe it all to
a.g.f & you'll get my eternal thanks!
--T.
[1] He & his best friend are taking the class in order to get cheap access
to the station's video editing studios so they can edit my hubbi's
soundtrack demo reel. Film/video soundtrack composer is *his* dream job, &
he's putting together a demo package to market his work. I think it's
pretty cool that both of our ultimate dream job goals are getting hooked
together this way ;-).
[2] I *will not* actually call it that. Copyright infringement is not a
good way to start a new career. Suggestions for a general alternative
lifestyle tv show name are always appreciated!
[3] The idea is that, if the 1/2 show works out, I could shop it around to
other local stations, PBS stations, HGTV, etc. I honestly know nothing
about this, but I have PR experience & am deterimined to market the hell
out of this concept until I find s'one to buy it. Yeah, it's a fantasy,
but gawddamnit, I want to do s'thing I truly love for a living, at least
for a brief, shining moment in my life!!!!
[4] I'll prob. need to expand past just goth in order to reach a broader
audience, but I'll never abandon what I love & what has made my site so
popular. My ultimate goal is to create alternative lifestyle resources,
whether tv, online, books, magazines, whatever. I want to create a forum
for ppl who want beautiful, creative homes & lives but are bored & tired
of the conservatism & canned neutrals that dominate home decorating media.

I think it would be great for you to show how to spiff a place up on a
budget, and since you are obviously a very creative and talented person, I
think you could do it with minimal props, since you say you won't have too
much time. Maybe just make the kinda suggestions that you do on your site;
where to buy and how you can goth up seemingly un-goth items-- and make
existing articles more creepy. When I lived in an apt. and couldn't paint, I
did the fabric drape thing and it helped a lot, so I think this kinda thing
should be included.

Ok..you don't have much time so narrowing down what you want
to show and then deciding on set dressing and what you want to
wear would seem the way to go.
You can always expand your vision if someone picks up on the
show. Simple, well done, and professional to get your foot
in the door or a wacky parody of home decor shows? Picking
a style for your show might help decide your segments as well.
I really like the trash to treasure kind of segment idea with
a Gothic twist. :0 )
Do you have theatre peeps connections? If you know anyone locally
you might see if you can borrow a painted drop for your back
ground so you don't have to reinvent the wheel. Good place to
check for props and furniture too.
This is so exciting! There just must be a market out there for
this kind of programing. It would be so wonderful to see you get
a series!
Best Wishes!

Indeed! A half hour goes by incredibly fast! You'll need to pick out 2 or 3
projects to do on the first show, have it prepped in various stages, and
will need some assistants. You'll have to outline the entire show, step by
step. I'd suggest even trying to outline what you say to a degree, but don't
script it. You will need to run through it a couple of times before you
actually tape it so that you can get the timing of everything down and see
what may need to be cut out or added. The majority of the work that is done
for a show is behind the scenes, it takes a LOT of planning, but I'm sure
you can pull it off :)

I also vote for the home decor aspect.
I found a book in the used bookstore a few months ago- called something like
"how to decorate a dump". Had ALL sorts of sueful bits n pieces for those of us
who live in ancient apartments whose landlords could care less WHAT we
do...since they have no interest in doing anything other than recieving a check
in the mail once a month- anyhow- all sorts of useful stuff like turning that
horrid THING into a livable tolerable fashionable bathroom, creating a
breakfast nook- fixing broken walls, a fire escape or rooftop garden-
lighting....
it even featured the different kinds of dumps;
the tenement dump,
the duplex dump,
the delapidated house dump,
etc.
Only problem was- book was written in the 70's- so....well, IT WAS WRITTEN IN
THE 70s!!!!!!!!
Its a great useful concept tho....and I did actually learn some quick things
while flipping through it.....
(but it was written in the 70's!)
Good luck with the project! Sounds like a blast

I really think there would be a market. HGTV does a show
called "Awesome Interiors" that has a lot of unusual and often
very cool and goth-friendly decorating ideas. However, they
usually don't go much beyond wall treatments and furnature. I
could really see a market for a similar show with _craft_ ideas,
and if that has success, I would imagine this could, too.

Most def. craft how tos! Home decorating tips is good also!! Maybe not cooking

more show time maybe. But little things are good for that. Accessories seems
really good.

How about a plain but effective background? Like a biiiiig piece of black
frabic w/ the websites address in a bright neon color painted on... So that you
don't have to display the address or say it and use time there. It'll be in the
background so people will see it and have time to write it down. Or maybe a
dark purple or something then black chairs w/ gothy pillows.. Or a couch so the
pillows look alright. And you can make the pillows and explain how you did it.
And a table.. will thats just a table.

Well, a decorating craft would be cool. How to decorate w/ CDs or how to
alter X to make it cooler. A simple how to make a garmetn would be cool too.
A pixie skirt (square w/ hole) or cirlce skirt would be pretty easy to do.

Going into your home would be neat, but probably best would be going
somewhere aggressively normal and showing how to find gothable things. How to
thrift. How to find cool things in teen mall slut stores, etc.

Fitted jacket and slim skirt w/ bustley back? Something without loose flowy
bits to get caught. Possibly a Gorey esque outfit?
To stalk w/in your site:
what you wore to the c6 cruise w/ big silver buttons
the silver corset from 'silvery glammy outfit'
the outfit you're wearing in the tartblossom superhero hair picture (red
brocade bodice/corset thinger) but w/out spiderweb underneath
In general, avoid hats (shadows on face), supershiny stuff be careful with,
avoid patterned hose (esp on arms) so you don't look diseased and powder your
chest too. I'd go with deep jewel toned things, brocade and such.

Yay. I saw a book recently about various kinds of funky decorating. I think
it's "Pad: A guide to ultraliving". A couple styles I liked included retro
Asian (basically, what 50s early 60s movie designers thought Asia was like);
Barbarella! (lots of shiny things and fur); geometric painting; and such. It
is a very keen book, but it is very $25.00 and I feel silly buying an
expensive book about decorating funkily and cheaply. I'll buy it when I
get paid next.

Yay Trystan! This is *such* cool news.
(and as someone else said, is there anyway that a video archive could

As to what you should cover - I'm gonna throw my vote in with the Home
Decor people. An episode (or two) about cool decor on a budget would
be *very* helpful, and could also be skewed to attract non-goths.
Another episode idea would be the Goffy Crafts one, but aimed towards
gift-making.
-Jilli, who is *really* happy for you!
I'm going to try & get my hubbi to digitize at least a few segments & turn
it into quicktime movies served off of one of my domains. Tricky to chop
it into small enough pieces that are reasonable for download, yet still
have some actual content. Plus I'll need to buy a whole lot more server
space, but that's not too expensive here (the only thing that's cheap in
Silicon Valley!). Prob. by the end o' the yr it'd be online.

I'd be interested in all of them, but mostly in home decorating tips
and projects and entertaining and cooking demos. They might be a good
thing to start with as well. But really, do whatever you feel most

People who run their own businesses, who make quality work that you would
recommend. It doesn't matter what kind of work, mainstream or non,
recognizable or up-and-coming.
As you're planning on shopping your tape around, remember that if you're
doing guests you're setting the initial tone of your show to anyone who
might want to buy it. Are you doing an alternative show that will still
attract the more mainstream, are you showcasing people who you believe to
be "on their way", or...?
>Any cheap, fast, & dirty set design tips or suggestions from the
>TheaterGoths out there?
Choose your clothes and then choose the backdrop. If you're going to wear
black clothes, don't choose a black backdrop, or you'll blend into it. I
recommend getting cheap fabric that flatters you and your clothes, which
you could reuse afterwards. As for furniture, go for pretty yet cheap
garage sale stuff - this is definitely the time of year to find that sort
of thing.
>Omigawd, what will I wear???
A nice, machine-washable skirt and blouse in colours that flatter you.

As our resident TVgoth, let me second this. As tempting and "easy" as
it will seem to go for black, avoid the temptation. Black *does* wash
you out on TV, and if you're naturally quite pale (as many of us are),
you'll come off looking like GothTalk, which I know is not your intent.
Black is okay as long as it's not right near your face. And really, you
should avoid white also along with very shiny fabrics (glare problems)
or really small, intricate geometric patterns (which can cause
"strobing", the effect where a pattern seems to turn into a psychedelic
swirly-whirl). Most TV tech people also really hate bright red and
bright green on the "talent"--these colors require a lot of correction
in the control room because of the way they reflect on the face.
You also need to be aware of the construction of your top depending on
what kind of microphone you're using. If you use a wireless mic, a
button-front shirt will be easier to manage--you can slip the mic out
through one of the spaces between the buttons, and the placket or collar
is the perfect place to clip it. Closed-neck tops can be problematic if
you're using a wireless; a vest or jacket can compensate for this. Do
*not* wear a one-piece outfit if you're using a wireless; I once made
this mistake and had to put up with the indignity of having the floor
director shove the pieces up and down the back of my dress throughout
the evening. (If you're using boom mikes, this stuff is not an issue.)
Jewelry is okay, but you should avoid anything that is too big, dangly,
or shiny--not so much for any fashion issues, but because it can become
distracting. We used to have a newscaster here who would pull her hair
back in a ponytail, then wear big, dangly hoop earrings, and I would
find myself unable to concentrate on anything but her swaying earrings.
I'll usually wear a simple base-of neck necklace with no dangly bits, or
a simple pendant on a cord, and studs, small hoops, or very small
dangles that will not move very much.
My only tips for makeup--since I'm usually trying to look "normal" and
you don't necessarily have that restriction--are: matte face (plenty of
powder), make sure any red spots are covered, use eyeliner to give your
eyes definition (esp. if you end up doing this with your glasses on),
and don't make your lippie too shiny.

I know that everyone else has set their sites on goth decor,
but I would also be keen on a gothic good things ( a short
little craft project) and a gothic table set up (no cooking
demo...too complicated).

If you're also going to try to pull the mainstream in maybe
you can incorporate artisans that pull off work that is
"oldfashioned" or "shabby chic". While people might be a
little hesitant about watching a "goth" show, perhaps an
alternative decorating hour or alternative artisans or lush
living spaces...hmmm.

Sounds like you have ideas for *many* shows. I like the
idea of incorporating historical touches into a modern
home. I've had so many people tell me that they never would
have thought to combine a modern wrought iron bed with an
antique dresser. Very nice, but not an idea they had. I
think it would go over well with a lot of people. Opening
their eyes to the possibilities. The medieval dungeon might
not go over well with the main stream though.

I think Ice Princess has the best advice being a person
from "in front of the camera". Could you get some practice
shots with your husband so that you can see the difference
of what you look like in real life and what you look like on
TV.

Crafts/ home dec. candle making, pillows, flower arranging, trash to
treasure stuff. Go watch Christopher Lowell on the Discovery channel. Like
him only more projects.

Simple solution.
First episode: How to do a quick (weekend?) room redo with home made crafts
and flea market finds. Use the studio as a guinea pig. Do basic illustration
of techniques/ ideas (lots of visual aids are good.) and do before/ after
shots.

Yep, I kinda see "Awesome Interiors" as The Competition -- they take
funky-weird-unsusual decorating ideas & market it to a hip 20s'thing
audience. Which is the route I might take if I want to expand my concept
outside of just goth. Which I might need to do if I ever want to make
money at it. But, hey, I'm still the the waaaay early stages here -- who
knows where it will go?
Thanks to everyone who posted & emailed me tips & ideas! a.g.f feedback
is always a great help to me! I will of course keep you posted on the
show's progress. And after we tape it, I will try to make it available in
some way, prob. snippits online & maybe tapes for sale. I don't forsee the
show being readily available till the end o' the year due to the massive
number of events & projects my husband & I are involved in, but I promise
it will happen. After all, this could be the first step towards my new
career ;->
Thanks again for yr ideas & support!!!
