I just declaired my major today for studio art after a long personal debate.
(I'm a sophomore in college). I've been planning on doing an art major for
practically my entire life, but i'm also terrified, both emotionally and
physically, becuase I know how much I am affected by my artwork and how much it
stresses me out. Plus, I dont know if I want to make "Art" my career. Now I
know that what you major in in college supposedly has nothing to do with what
you do for the rest of your life, but I need some reassurrance! So, here's my
question if anyone wants to help out.
-What did you major on in college, and if you feel like answering, why did you
choose that?
-Did your major affect your career choice?

And I know there are other art majors on here-what's it like for you guys? I
know this sounds silly, but many times my art assignments leave me crying-does
this ever happen to you?
I'm really interested in hearing everyone's responses/experiences!

i decided to take my response offline for no reason in particular but for
some reason i did.

computer engineering with a background in audio engineering.
i wanted to know how electronics worked and i wanted to improve
digital audio. i chose it when i was in 8th grade.

i loved music nad electronics and i wanted it to mix better than it was in
modern society. boy has it changed and without me.

> -Did your major affect your career choice?

engineering usually implies you end up engineering. however you can find
creative jobs that utilize it. for example my boi does QA on electronic
keyboards. he designs the sounds that go into the keyboards like drills or
piano tones... etc...

but who know what he will do in college (he's still in the beginning of
it).

my aunt graduated in english and nursing. what does she do now? after she
did sound effects adn editing in movies, she starting running a musuem mag
and teaches a multimedia class at nyu.

what i'm trying to say is there are lotsa ways around not having the
college experience and still having an interesting career.

traditional things can be applied in creative ways and unusual interests
sometiems get you amazing jobs that you wouldn't have gotten with
traditional pathes.

i wasn't an art major obviously, but i did cry a lot during college.
i was tired and overwhelmed with the work and what teachers
wanted(whatever it was... i'm still not sure).

people often recommendedthat i changed majors to something easier like
economics and even today they think engineering is wrong for me when i
complain about how boring it is. stick with what you want and what you
feel and remember that even after college you still have lot of thing to
learn still about your choosen art so keep taking classes when they
interest you. college is really more about learning to learn and research.

good luck

Fiction was my primary major, though I ended up triple-majoring,
finishing requirements for Screenwriting and Playwriting as well.

I chose it because - well, because my school lied to me, and while i
was told I would be able to double-major Journalism and Film, I could
do neither. *shrug* You take what you can get.

>-Did your major affect your career choice?

Nope. I ended up as a Marketing Copywriter for a while, then a Web
Producer. And being between jobs AGAIN, I'm not sure what to do. I
mean, my major was a stupid major. Why didn't I go to school and major
in breathing or something?

I wish I had majored in computer graphic design.
But I just realised this about a month ago. And I graduated a year
ago, so...

My original major, 9 years ago, was art, specifically design. It never got
further than that as I dropped out. Now I return to school this fall, for
design again, specifically furniture. Why? Because art school will open
further opportunities for me to expand my knowledge of materials and
techniques, and because I want to make furniture, or make other people make my
furniture.

>-Did your major affect your career choice?

No, my career choice effected my major.

I already am an artist. I want to be a better one. If I'm ever REALLY
successful at it, many years along, I'm going back to study marine biology
formally as well.

>And I know there are other art majors on here-what's it like for you guys? I
>know this sounds silly, but many times my art assignments leave me

>this ever happen to you?

The first time around, gah. I felt like I was years behind the other students
because I went to an underfunded backwater high school and learned nothing
useful in my art courses there, and never had access to half the materials and
resources that kids in better funded counties had. I wasn't up to the status
quo, and it showed, and I would get so frustrated that I would get sick. My
painting techniques were fine, but subject matter got me blasted out of a final
critique once and that left a sore spot too, a bitter "gonna come back and show
them yeah grrrr" kinda taste in my mouth. Other courses just left me cold -
when we were supposed to frame and matte photos or design and build things out
of cardboard and stuff, I was stumped while other students did it effortlessly;
when I asked them where they learned to do those things, they said "highschool"
and I just felt like a big dorkus.

Things are different now, and I am starting with a distinct advantage over my
classmates. And a scholarship based on the merit of my existing works.
Strangely, I feel an urge to reach out to the stumped dorkuses saying "gaaaar
wtf" and biting their lips in agony. ;]

I majored in costume design, because I couldn't think of doing
anything else.

yes, completely, I realized that I don't have the sort of
collaborative personality it takes to work in theatre, but am using my
costumes design skills nearly every day!

Oh yeah. It is important, because studying it is a great way to learn
how you react to criticism, and failure, and trial and error, and
success- so you can learn about yourself before hitting the job
market. I think getting personally involved is what makes art really
vivid, and engaging!
So, on one side yes, it might not be very practical, but yes I did it
and loved it and hated it and would do it again!

i'm a sculpture major entering my senior year. i didn't declare my major until
the end of my freshman year since we have foundation programs that all art
majors have to finish before they can declare their major. i had originally
wanted to major in sculpture when i applied to art school, but my interest in
computer graphics started a fleeting thought that i wanted to possibly be a
digital imaging/design major. then i realized i'd be happiest in sculpture, and
design wasn't really for me because i wouldn't be able to utilize the
creativity i was accustomed to. all sculpture majors at my school have the
opportunity to pursue their interests in other media as well, so i have learned
VRML, electro-mechanical systems, video editing, jewelry making and
metalsmithing, and i have a minor in printmaking. i really enjoy the amount of
freedom we have.

>-Did your major affect your career choice?

well, as of now, i have no career. i plan on going through a graduate program
in sculpture and possibly teaching. i'm also thinking about going back and
getting a degree in computer science after i finish grad school. (in other
words...i have no idea what i am going to do. =P )

>And I know there are other art majors on here-what's it like for you guys? I
>know this sounds silly, but many times my art assignments leave me

>this ever happen to you?

yes, it happens. i'm pretty sure it happens to everyone at some point in time.
being made to create art on someone else's time schedule and grading scale is
difficult, especially when you have no clue what they are interested in seeing.
some of my professors have been great, and some have been pretentious assholes.
i've learned something from all of them, though. my other problem is that i'm a
horrible procrastinator, and sometimes that gets me in trouble. i've managed to
learn to use my time a little bit better and get things done earlier so if i
get into trouble i don't need to panic. =)

right now, though, all i get to do is sit around on the computer because i
broke my leg horribly and can't go to school. =(

hope this helps a little. =)

Art. :) Because that's what I like to do. I'm good at math, science,
english, etc, but I don't actually like them much. But CMU keeps my
academic side satisfied. :) I'm glad I didn't have all art, all the time
like other schools I looked at. I would have burnt out. That's just my
experience though. The politics in the art world are enough to do it
alone for me, much less the actual work, but it's still really fun.

I started out as a theatre major, and learned quickly that I did not have
the
drive, talent or thick skin to make a living as an actor. So I switched my
major to English. Now, as an English major, everyone under the sun asked
"What are you going to do, teach?" and the answer was resoundingly no. I
have
great respect for teachers, and I know that my talents do not lie there
either.

So I'm in publishing. As an English major, I have the chance to work with
words and books, and my goal is to become an editor hopefully in F&SF.

I loved being an English major, and my grades went way up when I switched.
I
think this was because I was finally doing something I loved, not just what
I
enjoyed. I still enjoy theatre, but I love words and reading. So follow
your
heart. Do what you love, and all the rest will follow. Do not let anyone
shunt you into an accounting or business minor "just in case you need a
job."
It won't work.

sorry for the soapbox!

It's par for the course, going by what I've seen as an art major. I can
count several times when someone was presenting a heavy emotional piece
and couldn't continue because they were started to cry (heh, including
myself). Durn emotional art majors. ;D

My experience is somewhat different, as CMU requires you to know your
major when applying to the college. I've always known I was going to be
an art major, and for some reason it never occurred to me to do anything
else.
As to whether a degree affects your professional life - my history
professor told us not to worry about it. She had a major in science, was
a high school biology teacher for 10 years, and decided one day to quit.
A short while later, she was a Ph.D in History, and now teaches college.
A music major from here is now a successful journalist. It's weird like
that. :D

I'm an art history major and I picked it because I absolutely love the
subject. I entered college thinking "ok, I'll either be an art history
major or a psych major." then I took intro to psych and went "no way!"
and since I had already taken AP Art History in high school I knew I
loved the subject. for some reason it seems to surprise people when I
tell them I'm an art history major but, quite honestly, I wouldn't have
it any other way. in fact, I just got out of an amazing art history
class (italian renaissance architecture) that makes me SO GLAD I chose
this major. :D

> -Did your major affect your career choice?

not at all (although my career choice is still technically a year off
:). I'm an art history major whose primary area of study is the history
of architecture, rather than painting or sculpture. I'm not an
architecture/art history dual major and I have _never_ had any intention
of being an architect. I have no artistic talent and I could never
design buildings. my dream is to be a unix systems administrator and
every once in a while I entertain the idea of going to grad school in
ten years or so to either get a law degree or get my ph.d. in art
history. I'd rather drive nails through my forehead than go to grad
school at this point, but I know it might be in my future someday. as
of now, however, I'm planning what's left of my education around gaining
some of the skills I'll need to break into the sysadmin world. :D

russian/area studies with a minor in literature.

i chose russian b/c i knew i'd get bored with physics. languages were
the only thing that didn't bore me at one point... i studied it in high
school and actually had to work at it, so i decided to do it.

the minor in literature i picked up b/c i was going nuts with all the
international service/poli sci/econ courses. i needed to retain some
semblance of sanity.

> -Did your major affect your career choice?

sort of. i had to get a bunch of vaccines before i went to russia to
study for a semester. when i got back to the states, i got really
sick... ended up graduating a year late. got sicker... and ended up
out of work completely. unless i can find an office which can
accomodate me, i doubt i'll be working anytime soon.

my husband's first major was print journalism. he did this simply b/c
he did it in HS and knew he could do it. he realized how much he hated
it (incredibly shy and hates journalistic writing conventions) and went
to his advisor to declare cinema studies as his major (middle of his
sophomore year)... that was the day the university formally dropped the
cin. studies major, so he chose for literature. he minored in comp. sci
(he might've minored in cinema studies, too).

he currently works for a large company, doing web development and web
app. programming. in his off hours, he writes fiction and composes
music. he's working on soundtracks/scores for a few student films.

if he had to go back and do it all over, ithink he'd major in either
computer science or graphic design. no matter what, he wants to
eventually do music full time.

BS Physics. because I'm crazy I guess! Now that I look back on it, I wanted a
challenge and enjoyed science and wanted to push myself as far as I could (I'm
a bit burned out now). Since I've been in the work world, I'm only around
people who are like twenty years older than I am. I'm also considering going
back into school so I can be around people more my age. I'll maybe go into
particle or high energy physics. Many times I've felt a strong urge to go into
costuming or art history and I've changed my major about three times at the
start of my junior year (mathematics, classics, psychology), but I decided to
go ahead and finish up with Physics. Sometimes I still don't know!

I'm a sudio art major with a concentration in painting/drawing. This
is always what I've wanted to do. On the other hand, I've never quite
figured out what I'll do when I actually have the degree.... much to
my parents dismay. I just never seemed to really even think of doing
anything else. Besides, I'd rather love what I do and not have tons of
money than end up tossing myself out of my office window because I
hate my life.

>-Did your major affect your career choice?

Hopefully it will. *smile* Right now though, it hasn't. I'm a
accountant on a Air Force base. Yuck.

>And I know there are other art majors on here-what's it like for you guys? I

Oh yes. All the time, unfortunatly. I'll get totally upset over the
smallest things. Like eyelashes not looking right in drawing. I
realize it's silly later but at the time it's horrible that I can't
get it right. Like it should be, like I'm picturing it in my head.
Luckly though I seem to get over thing rather easily. Once I'm done
with a work I don't think about it again. As a result I actually only
have one of my own peices. Either I destroy them, loose them, or most
frequently, my friends/family take them. I also have a habit of
bouncing around a lot, obsessing over different mediums or styles. Oil
painting for a couple months, then sculpture for a while, then jewelry
design, etc. Right now I'm into costume design and Russian art. As a
result I have to go through learning periods pretty often, which is
frustrating. I get really upset with that too. The thing school has
taught me the most is to calm down. To see my work as others do,
instead of a little extention of myself. If no one else can see that
the ears are crooked why should I freak? *s*

Double Major in Chemistry and English is what I was going for, with a
minor in Spanish.

I went to Eastern Michigan University and was going to teach my major
subjects, the Minor was to fall back on in case they needed a Spanish
teacher.

I realized pretty quickly (sophomore year) that I had no desire to be
a high school teacher anymore and slowly left college. The best part
of college was talking to friends and working long hours in the
college library (how I love books!).

>-Did your major affect your career choice?

I'm not an art major, but creating something new that's been nagging

I started at NYU in Fall 95 as a Finance major - was planning to have a
career as an investment banker, possibly specializing in M&A (mergers &
acquisitions). Yes, working with scumbag corporate raiders and the like,
basically fucking people over while collecting a lot of money.
Problem? I HATED the way NYU business classes are taught and structured.
Made no sense to me at all. At the time, I had started interning at TVT/Wax
Trax! Records publicity, on a whim... and was really enjoying it. I had a
job offer within a month of starting, but my family was not going to let me
drop out of school to get an entertainment job. So, I begged them to let me
switch majors. I flipped a coin between English and Psychology, and didn't
give a fuck either way. I already knew this whole college thing was a huge
waste of money and couldn't give a shit less, as long as I ended up with
some degree to hand to my father.
I ended up in Psych. Majoring in it ruined any interest I had in it. Going
to college also made me hate reading, which I used to love to do.

> -Did your major affect your career choice?

The running joke is "yes" - how can a publicist who majored in Psych go
wrong when she's dealing with those wacky rock stars?
But for real, it was pretty useless. NYU is a fucking pricey school, and I
feel that I got screwed. I learned a lot, but none of it came from a
classroom - just the people I knew, the city, the jobs I had.
I work in publicity and new media b/c I like it, and b/c it's fun. Hard
work, but incredibly cool. The perks outweigh the shit. And if you're good,
you can go far and make good money (celebrity PR pays very well most times,
and a record label PR Director can pull in a ridiculous amount as well).
Note: this pertains only to music PR - I have done corporate PR (fashion,
travel, automotive) as well, and find it horrifically boring.

I majored in Architecture because I wanted to be an Architect all my life. And the
will to succeed was furthered by my counselors/teachers/family/complete strangers
telling me I could never finish because it was too hard.

So I finished and have been working in Architecture firms for a bunch of years. But
a few years ago, I (like Pixie) realized I should have majored in Graphic Design
which would have lead to web design. As much as I hate to admit it, there was no
"web" when I went to college. Anyway, I've taken hundreds of graphics and web
classes, in the hopes of changing careers, but so far no luck.

It turns out, that Architecture is not so much designing fabulous things, but more
like making budgets and schedules and having meeting with grisly old men.

Right now, I'm double majoring in history and elementary education. I started
out in history (because its my love) but recently decided that I wanted to
teach. There are practically no teachers in FL, and someone needs to start
giving a darn about kids. Since I'm done with general education and only have
15 hours of history left, I decided to go ahead and keep it too.

I've done all sorts of shop jobs, many of them interesting, selling
alternative clothing, reptiles & books.

Now I'm starting my own futuristic fashion business online.

I've found in life that if I need to learn something, there's a training

This is going to make me sound so yuppie-ish, but when I first went into
University I wanted to study either Neuroscience or Genetics. So I entered
UBC in a general science program. At the end of the year I had to decide
my major. I asked around and it seemed everyone I knew was doing Biology
related programs so I thought the market would flood so I decided to study
the field I got the highest mark in. Physics.

I originally intended to do Astronomy but I didn't have enough credits for
that, so I left the Combined Physics and Astronomy program to do pure
physics. But my interest in Astro led me to an interest in High energy
physics, and H.E.P. led me to particle physics.

SO now I sit doing an MSc in particle physics, and I plan to do a PhD in
particle in the Fall.

> -Did your major affect your career choice?

Can't answer that yet, I'm not too sure if I want to be a full fledged
professor. But I feel Physics has prepared me for a job in High
tech/research companies, it has taught me computers/electronics/
programming etc. I can be your general purpose grunt =)

But I still want to work in Space *sulk* So education be damned, I'm gonna
get there eventually.

And if anyone read this far, I'm shocked =)

Actually, that was really interesting. I love to hear about goth geeks.
And it sounds like you'll be doing some interesting work once you leave

The sad fact remains most physics people are extremely dull *sigh* Just
try getting your average physicist to go with you to the local

I've considered going into Industry, but I didn't think there was much

Particle is fun, although you can get stuck behind a computer doing Monte
Carlo if your not carefull. I choose it simply because I liked the concept
of understanding the fundamentals of the universe. That and a GUT would be
extremely cool ;)

Ooh, I agree! Sounds like Jeff is doing some really cool stuff!! :)
I majored in nursing with a psychology minor (don't know why the psych
minor...I HATE psych with a passion). Currently I am a post-baccalaureat
student in health sciences with a pre-med concentration. The nursing major
has pretty well set what my job is (NICU RN).

I wish I could have done something with art or theatre, but I felt like the
healthcare track was a bit more practical for me. I don't mean to put
anyone down, but it seems like fine arts majors and liberal arts majors
are a dime a dozen (especially in the goth community). I think the people
who are creative and good enough to make a career out of their passion for
arts are pretty awesome! But darn it, there just aren't any goth-y nurses
or MDs around to chat with *sob*. If I could get the math down better, I'd
love to become a medical physicist.

I was a music major. I started out as a performance major simply because I
didn't want to teach, so I didn't declare music education. I was coerced into
becoming one anyway, but I thought I needed it in order to become a college
music history professor. After three years of taking all of these music ed
classes that I found useless, I found out from the resident musicologist that I
DIDN'T need an ed degree to teach college (this seemed odd to me at first). So
I immediately dropped all the music ed and pedagogy courses (for the non music
people-classes about teaching specific instruments :) ). Then a semester
later-ONE away from graduation, I developed carpal tunnel syndrome and ran out
of money. Go figure! :*( Can't play=no senior recital=no degree.

>Did your major affect your career choice?

Yes and no. My extensive knowledge of Classical music made me a shoe-in (sp?)
for a job at Borders, which I held for three years, ironically not in the
Classical department (it was run by a man who writes CD reviews for
international music publications so I think he's more qualified!). The
downside is is that I cannot play (I was a violinist), and you really do forget
a lot if you're not surrounded by it 24-7. Sometimes I can barely answer what
were once basic questions on Jeopardy! Right now I'm a peon at the library
because I'm too sick to work a lot (I'm one of the endo girls from an old
thread).

Okay I beat that into the ground! Sorry!

I am currently working on a double major: English and Poli-Sci. (I am almost
finished... Yay December!) Both of my areas, British Lit. and West
Wing/Congressional shite, I am very interested in. Mostly though, I am in
school just to get some sort of degree, because I feel I need one. Both of my
parents are highly educated, and I would feel like a loser if I didn't
finish--the naked truth of the matter.

On the positive side of university, I work at the student radio station, and
that keeps me sane. In my four years there I've had more opportunities to
advance my career, than with anything to do with my major directly.

>-Did your major affect your career choice?

Not really at all... instead college radio has had the biggest impact on my
life. I write for a music magazine, and hope to find some sort of permanent
gig doing that. My entire life revolves around music, so I will prolly end up
working for a label, zine, or radio station in some capacity...and flipping
burgers on the side to make ends meet.

I started out in Political Science. I chose it because at the time I wanted to
go into print journalism, covering politics. I quickly got burned out on the
subject and decided to switch to English. The semester I started taking my
English prerequisites I had a Poli Sci class on human rights with a wonderful
professor. So now I'm double majoring and finishing my Poli Sci degree with
classes taught by mentioned lovely professor. My English degree is emphasized
in Films, Folklore and Popular Culture and my Poli Sci degree is emphasized in
human rights studies.

>>-Did your major affect your career >>choice?

Well I'm not quite to that point. I'll be graduating next year. I think my
majors will certainly be useful towards journalism if I decide to do that.
I've been doing research in the Grad School of Folklore at my university and am
considering getting my masters in that (not really a career I know). I'm
interning at the Library of Congress' American Folklife Center this summer. I'm
thinking I want to join the Peace Corps on graduation. So did my majors affect
my expected career? The English major certainly opened me up to new
possibilities. I think that if you major in what interests you and seek a
career in something you are interested in the two seem to be linked naturally.

I'm a linguist by degre, currently finishing my MA thesis specialising in an
area of argument structure - verbal alternations. I'll get finished soon,
honestly I will :) I'm also doing first year computer science, just the one
programming course alongside my thesis. I chose it because I have a talent
for languages but I preferred the grammar to the vocabulary. Linguistics
seemd like a natural choice and I get to study something that people use
innately without an explicit awareness of the complexity of the underlying
structures, so it's kind of like delving into the brain's organisational
principles.

> -Did your major affect your career choice?

hell yes :) it's what I want to do for the rest of my life, something,
anything related to language, except teaching English at high school (which
seems to be the only job most people think of when they think of ling
degrees) The computer science course is aimed at making me a bit more
commercially viable since there seem to be a ton of computational
linguistics jobs out there and I'm hoping they still will be when I finish.
I'd like to do a PhD in comp.ling but I'm not sure where or in what area.

Currently while I study I work part-time too, in a cafe. I've been doing
this for the last 6 years so I've got lots of experience. It makes me feel a
little non-plussed that my hospitality experience is currently more
marketable than my rather expensive education. But either way I'm aiming for
jobs where my performance is more important than my appearance. I've not had
to compromise it yet :) and I tutor undergraduate ling courses as well as
the cafe work. I think the department likes me as their resident freak,
shows that they aren't too stuffy and serious :)

hmm, more than I meant to say but I've written it so it can stay there :)

My BA is in English. Long story - I went to a high school where *only*
science and math mattered. I'm stupidly good at math and pretty good at
science so I was pushed into the whole pre-med thing. I got into lots
of really prestigious pre-med programmes too. But three quarters of the
year through grade 12 I burned out on that whole thing and started
sending out random applications to different programmes at different
places and ended up at a liberal arts university that didn't even have a
med school.

More random course-choosing, and I ended up mostly in modern languages.
(Turns out it's the same part of the brain that's responsible for being
stupidly good at maths and languages and linguistics). However, I
didn't want to major in French and the German department sucked big
time, so at the end of first year I was signed up for a joint
English/Economics degree (english because I liked it and Economics
because I'm good at it and had a guaranteed A). However, the yuppiescum
economics students, plus the 8.30 am macro theory course got to me so I
ended up single major in English. Quite possibly the thing I am least
good at in the whole world (aside from art).

But I really got into it, especially the language and linguistics bit,
and eventually got a decent degree. Somewhere along the line (mid
second year I think) I decided I wanted to get a PhD and become a
university lecturer.

My MA (medieval studies - Vikings in the Celtic world) went very
pear-shaped and I got off the academic track, supposedly to write but
actually to do bugger all.

Eventually I got into a PhD programme in something completely unrelated
- in the English department but was actually history/ comparative
religion.

>-Did your major affect your career choice?

Two things in the end have affected my career choice:

The job (at least in the UK) of being a university lecturer has changed
out of all recognition over the last 10 years. You have to treat them
like they're school kids these days. Less freedom, more paperwork, oh,
and watering down the courses so they can cram loads of cultural studies
crap onto what's supposed to be an English Lit degree. Upon reflection
I decided to do the work, get the doctorate, and bugger off to a private
US university (my subject was really trendy in the States too) where I
wouldn't have to do what the government thought was good this week.

But then, I got a chronic debilitating illness that gives me impaired
concentration and scrambled the verbal centres of my brain. I can't
talk coherently on bad days, and I can't think on my feet, so teaching
was impossible, as was writing up.

So I dropped out.

Now I'm a medical secretary, about to become unemployed and doing casual
temp work, or possibly being professionally disabled.

Disability aside, I'm 32 years old and I *still* don't know what I want
to do when I grow up.

I'm doing a Bsc in Cognitive Science, so I assume that'd be my major.

As for why I chose it, it's because I messed up my A levels and didn't get
onto either the course I wanted or into the university I wanted (My grades
were BCEEN if anyone wanted to know). I got accepted to the university of
westminster to do cogsci.

And I have no idea what it may lead to a job in...

Greetings

My professional major was Broadcast/Cable Communications. Essentially,
television production and managment. Originally I was a theater major, but
I had too much stage fright to be effective.
I've found that I love editing and putting a visual interpretation to
scripts. Almost wish now I had majored in film.

Just for the enjoyment, I took a second major in Medieval Studies, which is
something one only majors in as a second degree or in preparation for a
graduate progam. And I'm one class short of a minor in Asian Religions.

I did my undergrad in History, more specifically the
Persecution of Heresy in the 16th and 17th Centuries. I chose it
because I had found the Reformation fascinating since high school
and for some reason I am obsessed with weird religious sects. I
chose it because I had a passion for it, basically. And I knew
that I wouldn't get a job because of it, but did it anyhow.

> -Did your major affect your career choice?

Nope, I ended up working at Hot Topic for two years after
I got out of school. Then I spontaneously decided to go to grad
school two weeks before the applications were due. I got in,
needless to say, and two years later got my Masters in Library
and Information Studies. Now I'm a librarian.

For most undergraduate degrees it really doesn't matter
what you get, just as long as you have one. Some matter, of course,
like business or possibly art or I don't know, maybe CS. But for
the most part, I'm a firm believer that you go back and get your
second degree in the thing you really want to have a career in.
But I'm weird and also planning on getting a PhD in Library
Science and/or a Masters in History. :D

well i go to university here in canada, which is a tad bit different
from college in canada.

i started university in 1993 in computer science. i went for three
years before i dropped out due to failing courses. i chose it because
it was pretty much all i knew how to do and it was the only thing that
kept my interest long enough.

>-Did your major affect your career choice?

well after i dropped out in 1996, i went into the workforce, hoping to
get a job in computers, based on my knowledge and the demand for it.
i went from data entry to webdesigner, to secretary. by the end of
that three year period of workforce stuff, i realized i needed a
degree to get what i wanted. :/ so i came back to school in 1999.
i'm graduating in april 2002.

as for affecting my career choice, you go to university in the hopes
that you will be doing something in that area. my university
experience this time around (in computer science again) has changed my
direction in a sense that i don't want to do basic programming for
business apps or webdesign. instead, i've focused my career options
on either a) computer crime and security or b) forensic osteology and
using computers with it.

because of this, i'm hoping to god that i get into either of these
areas. i'd feel it was a waste of my time going to school for it, if
i wind up doing webdesign or something. :/ i've gone to school for
something i love doing and care passionately about. i'd want to be
doing it as a career.

skills were very well developed, i wasn't that good in many other
areas. i was also specilized in drawing specific things as well, so
when we had to do projects in other areas, i didn't have an interest
in it, and i wasn't skilled enough either. i cried my eyes out when
we had to do a pencil drawing of a pinecone sitting in front of us.
mine wound up looking like a fuzzy banana. :/

other times, i lacked the patience to do better work. not a good
trait for someone that's doing art. i'd cry when i couldn't get what
i wanted to come out of my hands. so i dropped art half-way through
highschool, and i kind of regret it now. :(

Well I guess if you're following in the footsteps of *real*
physicists...you won't believe I am hard science;) I did
the chemistry thing, and then did a PhD in organic
chemistry. Scary thing is, I still love it.

Well, I think you're warped. :> Or maybe you have a
different definition of cool than I do. Or you just didn't see
the bunch of people I went to school with... etc., etc. ;>

I'm entering into college next fall (taking a year off to work and get some money),
and I'm going into Theater Tech/Set Design. I took a basic stage tech course in HS
and liked it a lot; my teach thought I'd do well in that field so I'll give it a
whirl. If nothing else I'd be able to get a job almost anywhere I go...just have
to find the local community theater ;)

> -Did your major affect your career choice?

Well, I've been thinking about it for a bit, and decided that I probably don't want
to -have- kids (maybe adopt tho) for the main reason that I'd be unable to do any
tech work for awhile. Teching is pretty much a transient job--you follow the
shows. Not sure what I want to do as far as family and kids are concerned...

i've been confused . and still confused about what i want to major in..i'm in
college, just taking normal classes not knowing that i'm going to do. i know if
i had a dream job. i would be a historical costume designer behind movie sets
and what not. as well as have my own little fashion line going on. .. but...
that whole field seems intimidating because it's so competitive, and it's only
if you're so good at what you do, and communicative, that you would get really
well known...

i thought about graphic design.. maybe that.. but.. i was wondering

is there a field.. .. not sure. but around the theater field. i'm thinking that
if you choose theatre arts as your major, it consumes acting and drama.. which
is something i don't want. instead i want to be the costume designer behind the
sets... what major would that consider of? ... or any major out there where i
can combine computer graphics and fashion design????? ...

i am lost..

When I left highschool I was pretty sure I wanted a specialist in
Political Science and a major in English. I took Art History for the
heck of it.

Within a few weeks I had completely reconsidered and discovered that I
wanted to double major in Art History and English... which I followed
through (the last paper of my undergrad degree is due next tuesday).
Art History has been the major passion (intersts particularly in
post-war and contemporary art) and english was okay. I say only okay
since I got to discover a ton of books I probably would have never
picked up but in the end I resented ruining "stories" by overanalyzing
them ;-) Taking words and putting them into other words doesn't
interest me as much as taking something visual and putting it into
words =-)

>>-Did your major affect your career choice?

Its sure gonna! In a couple years I want to do a Master's Degree in
Museum Studies (right now I want to accumulate more experience in the
field while paying off student loans accumulated thus far). But I
have to say, it wasn't my major that affected my choice as much as it
was my experience volunteering at the campus gallery. I got to the
University of Toronto and the Barnicke Gallery is a public venue
(recognized nationally as a cultural heritage center) and it is also
to the largest private collection of art in Canada ... private cuz its
owned by the U of T student's union, Hart House.

Without getting into details -- when I discovered how to make art
history truly alive through educational programming etc, I discovered
where I think I fit into this great big world. *tee hee*

In this last year I've gained experience with corporate art
collections, commerical galleries and now I'm also starting to work
with an artifacts museum.

School is a great thing to find out what you like but the real world
is the best place to find out what you want to actually do with your
life.

=-)

Actually, there /is/ such a major, and if I had known as a firstyear what
I know now as a first year senior (let's hear it for Super Seniors!), I
would be onbe myself. It's called Technical Theatre, and comprises all of
those things that go on in the theatre besides acting and direction. This
includes Costume Design/Production, Set Design, Lighting and Sound Design,
etc.. For someone interesting in Graphic Arts and Costuming, this might
just be a great way to go.

That said... Hi!

Yet another lurker coming out of hiding now that she's found a way to be
helpful.. Gods knows I've picked up enough tips from you all in the few
months I've been hiding out around here ;}

Hmm.. As I said, I'f a first year senior, Advertising Design (I chose it
because I wanted to be an artist and not starve, and yes, I know I'm a
corporate whore, I'll deal). I love costuming, but don't have much time
for it these days :/ Mostly I spend my time making chainmaille, painting,
parking it in front of the computer, or seeking some semblance of fun in
central New York (ick). I'm from DC, miss it terribly, bust discovering
that five hours to Toronto isn't that bad. Anyway, enough out of me.

Well since you're humble about it I will cut you some slack =) You got to

From 1996-2000, I earned a B.S. in rehabilitation psychology. In order to
become a licensed therapist, I needed a master's degree in general
psychology, social work, counseling psychology or rehabilitation
counseling.... So, I chose to get a M.S. in rehab. counseling, and I have 3
semesters left. Without the M.S., I could have found work in the psychology
field, but it would not have been very rewarding or paid a living wage.
