This is so nice to hear...I sometimes think I'm the only non-ubergoth on
this ng.
Which brings me to my question: Is anyone out there willing to fess up
to ungothlike interests, hobbies, etc. (And don't ask me to define
"ungothlike." I'll leave that up to you.)
I'll be first:
1) I love to cook, bake, etc.
2) I collect antique dolls (Okay, so the two working voodoo dolls my
mother gave me probably count as goth (Don't ask. You had to know
my mother...)
3) I also collect ugly hawaiian shirts.
4) I actually like heavy metal music.

There's nothing "ungothlike" about cooking, baking, etc. unless you want
us to dig around in the ground for small grubs to eat (which is basically
where I'm at, although I'm exaggerating bec. my uncle who's usu. in Nigeria
suddenly called up yesterday and said he was in my area and he invited
me to lunch. Out of the blue. Ask for food and the universe delivers,
heh. Actually, I'm been out food gathering because there's vegetables

Right now, I only have one, the castle of the mad king of Bavaria.
I practice piano and I write every day, and in general, I don't
consider these to be ungothlike activities either. I am really into
crosswords puzzles, mostly bec. it's such a time killer. I play
video games, watch TV and spend entirely too much time on USENET!

I cross-stitch, which seems very old-ladyish to me, despite the fact that
I know other goths do it.
I love to bake, and am starting to enjoy cooking more. I actually love
being a homemaker--I like to think of myself as a gothic pioneer in this
sense. You should see me, vaccuuming in my velvet or cleaning in my corset
(not really, but almost!).
I'm a zinester, which has always seemed way more punk than goth to me.
That's all I can think of.

I don't know that I have anything I'd call a "hobby"--and the stuff I do is
pretty stereotypically goth (read, write, play on Usenet...) However, I
sometimes find myself at the riverboat casinos and the occasional pool hall
with my mundane friends (it's next door to my workplace.) I think Las Vegas is
the funnest place on earth. I like hiking and rock climbing (though I've yet to

rollerblading...swinging at the park...antiques...but I get the feeling these
are all pretty common among goths, after reading the other responses.

I dunno, I think cobbling is very BudgetGoth. It'll save lots
of money, and also it's sort of a lost art. Everything is done by
machine these days, and not many people do cobbling anymore.

Dressage is lovely to watch; it's one of my favorite events.

oooh. pretty :) i rode horses for an *incredibly* short time m'self -
basically, i was seven, riding a little white pony named "lucky", that
sonofabitching beast, and we were trotting along the ring, and all of a
sudden i was off him, falling *back-first* onto the fence, and then
hitting the ground. let's just say i was in massive pain. then they told
me the whole "you need to get back on him" and i was like
"bull-fucking-shit. i'll get on *a* horse, but not *this* horse." and i
got on him, and never rode him again. after that, they allowed me to ride
my favorite horse - a big black quarterhorse named crusader :)
and dammit! now i see all the horsie-goths on agf, and none of you live
near me so we can go to belmont together when it opens! *sniff* but if any
of you *do* get the the nyc area and wanna go, i know... ways... of
getting in to the clubhouse for free. ahem. <raises eyebrows>
Hey i _run_ a mud with my boyfriend. Does that make me ungothier?
As for the things i do..hm. Horseback riding (though it seems that the
horse infatuation isnt so rare..though i dont like the racetrack, i adore
dressage though). I even own a pair of riding boots and a helmet of my

First of all, Lady B. and I have exchanged souls on the topics of shoes
(her fetish) and strippers (my fetish), and she *is* indeed the world's
number one shoe fetishist.
As for grocery shopping, I will step up to the plate on this one and hit
it out of the park for grocery-buying. I adore it. AAMOF, I just got home
from the market, where not only did I get everything on my list, but saved
**$25** with coupons and my discount-card-thingie. Thank you, thank you.
Please, hold your applause.
Grocery shopping is one of the most eminently relaxing things I do--it's
like meditation, cuz once you know pretty much what you need week-to-week,
you can Zen your way through the aisles without adding up the prices ("of
course this is $100 worth of stuff!") or consulting your list ("ahh, I see
there is a sale on Safflower oil. I also remember that I ran out of it
while making a curry the other night.").

I've always gone by the idea that since I'm a goth, I decide if something I do
is goth. :) Others, however, have not had as...broad a definition as I do.
so, my non-goth hobbies would probably be...
1. Figure skating. For the last several years I've just been a spectator,
but my new job is across the street from a rink so I think I'll take it up
again. I can be quite fanatical about it, and friends have learned not to
disturb me during the big competitions.
2. Vintage cartoons, especially Warner Bros. and Tex Avery.
3. I've been told I need to turn in my goth membership card because of my
enjoyment of professional wrestling (WWF only). However, I tend to regard
that as basically just the world's biggest and most extravagant live-action
roleplaying game, so I'm not sure it's as un-goth as people claim.
4. I'm one of the only goths who turns up at our local British media
convention every spring. At least, one of the only goths who turns up and
actually *participates* because I'm interested in the topic, as opposed to the
babygoths that just hang out looking dissipated and making the dear old stuffy
Britgeeks nervous.
And being a PBS pimp is probably not very goth, now that I think about it.
Though I'd wager there aren't a lot of other PBS stations who have on-air
pledge-pitchers with burgundy hair.

oh my wicked soul- I actually LIKE being OUTSIDE on sunny days! I don't tan,

Wicca/ Satanism (I'm a closet buddhist)

I like *looking at* sunny days, the only time I like actually being

peel and get to go back to my natural paleness.

Well, there *is* that Sailormoon fixation.
You all can find that post a few days ago where I listed
a lot of the moonie crap I have lying around my room
(it's taking over...)
I also collect stuff from Disney's "Beauty and the Beast"
but I really don't have a whole lot of it. I used to be a
low-key Trekker, and I do collect Data figures, but that's
not anything resembling a consuming passion.
There are a lot of fixations which would be normal were I
a Perkygoff, but alas, I am a Sarkygoff who giggles a lot.
So I don't really have much excuse for the profusion of
Sanrio things and stuffed animals sitting around my room.
Right now it's bunnies (which started cause I used to get
them every year for easter, and has somehow also been
tied into the Sailormoon collection) and frogs (which
started when people - mostly onliney friends - started
giving me frog things because of my sig. I have a morbid
fear of fish so I really hope no one gets any wise ideas
and starts sending me fish-related stuff. I used to collect
elephants, too.
I adore a lot of 1960s-present British writers, which I don't
think is particularly gawth. I think Kazuo Ishiguro could
kick Poppy's ass any day. I also like writing a lot and I
****hate**** "angsty goth poetry" and I ****hate****
most stories set "in the scene".
I like cross-stitch and painting wooden furniture with trompe
l'oeil finishes and stencilling and I used to be really into
comics, which I'm starting to get into again. I also used to
like beading, but I then decided it was a too-intricate pain in
the booty and my eyesight wasn't worth sacrificing over it.
I do Calligraphy sometimes, and I like Dover coloring books
and those biiiiiiiiig coloring posters you can buy at craft stores.
I get into these moods where I REALLY feel like doing housework.
And so I do... and I beg off social occasions and so on just to
stay at home throwing away old pantyhose and issues of
Mademoiselle from 1992, etc.
Sometimes I think I'm NotAGoth, and this suits me just fine.

I wish i liked going for groceries. I work nights, so the only time i
can go is at like 7am, and, looking like I do, I get paranoid in the
store :) People look at me funny. So, i run in for what I need, then
back out fast. The Joyous bit is that I found a new grocery store! It's
in Richmond, so there's a high weirdness ratio, and i don't feel quite
as bad. Plus they have a really good international food section. I've
been munching on Red Pepper Hummus and pitas for hours now, and there's
some nummy looking german stuff there i'm going to try too. Spaetzel is
my fave. I wish i could get the whole store to myself, then i'd enjoy it
more. :) I'll shut up now...

Personally, I tend to include any hobby that requires imagination in
the "gothic hobby" category. Writing, drawing, crafting, sewing,
reading, moviemaking, makeup art, what have you.
But not sports. ;-) Unless it's creative dance or something like...

just passing time!
#1: I am very hooked. Pathetically hooked. Embarassingly hooked. I got into

AOHell. It's so sad...fortunately I'm going to attend this school which will
_hopefully_ take up all my time (seeing that since I'm in the theater area,
I'll be doing TONS of plays...), so I'll get less and less hooked when finally
one day...*PoOf*!!...I'll no longer be caught in the iron hand of AOHell.
#2: I ususally talk to people online after reading all of the agf
messages...then I sit around moping or staring at the ceiling or listening to
music or studing some new play...it's a pathetic life I lead, I know. I just
never really bother to get out and do something...yeah, sometimes I frequent
the local clubs, but in Dallas, there aren't many wonderful Goth clubs...at
all...I live in a town full of hicks, homies, and hispanics. Eengh. Someone
take me out of this place...*whimper* Excuse my mopey mood...not feelin to well

I guess I'm kind of addicted to agf and, to a lesser extent, alt.gothic...but
not so addicted that I couldn't live without them if I had something else to
do...? My schedule is such that most of my free time is in the middle of the
night, and I don't like tv much, so the entertainment options are limited.
I stick to Usenet, e-mail and looking up stuff on the web occasionally--I
*really* dislike "chatting," even to my favouritest people, because I feel like
I have nothing to say, and if I did, I'd say it better in e-mail...but I'm
always, always doing other stuff when I'm online--making packages for people,
writing, doing homework, paying bills, etc. I really *like* doing a million
things at once (is that a lefthanded thing?)...and when it's 4 am and you're
bored but not tired it's kind of reassuring to have the computer humming away.
Kind of like how some people leave the TV on *all* the time, I guess.
