The younger one was not 5, like I thought, but 7 years old.
Completely attached to the GameBoy. I'm beginning to think
GameBoy is part of a fiendish plot to stupefy young boys...
or maybe its function is to keep them from running around
amok. Later on, I gave him a huge popsicle size lollipop.
That worked too.
The girl was OK. She wanted to play so I got out these Fashion
Plates that I have from when I was in middle school. I suppose
nowadays kids can have Barbie Fashion Designer CD-ROM and these are
antiquated. Basically, the gist of it is you choose your fashion
plates and textures, outline the design and then colour it in with
colour pencils. I also have one for greeting cards. I remember
I _really_ wanted these when I was little and I got them from
Xmas. She likes drawing and fashion design so she was totally
into it. We also played the evil pumpkin patch game that I have
shown to various goths who have visited my home.
The first day we went to the Children's museum. I have never
been there but I had heard that it was a pretty good museum.
And when we got there, they really loved it. They were
running around the entire place like all the other kids. I
knew I wasn't going to get out of there any time soon. I
sat in the auditorium reading and by and by, there was
some event going on... Camerapeople were interviewing the
Mayor and there were ppl in the aisles trying to sit down.
My aunt and uncle were out with the kids and the rest of
us watched this presentation on Mars. The announcer was
a local newscaster and she had been delayed bec. of Kim
Perot's death :( (it was breaking news)
The next day was Museum District Day and all the museums were
open without admission. The Museum of Science was OK and then
we went to the zoo. I've never really been to zoos as a kid
and as it was, I didn't get to see a kangaroo bec. the visitors
were complaining so much about the heat. We saw the koalas
(a new exhibit), who were in air conditioning while we weren't
and lots of other small animals, like skinks and meerkats.
I really wanted to see a Maya Lin exhibition at the Museum of
Contemporary Art. Arts museums are not good for kids bec. they
can't yell and scream, run around and touch things, so this was
kind of bad. Plus, there was a jazz band playing in the museum
so I couldn't hear any of the explanations on the ArtPhone.
There was a Maya Lin video with Mr. Rogers. She made all this
furniture. The bed was really comfortable and made with the
same curves as the human body. A lot of her art is based on
nature but I wouldn't call her a Nature Artist bec. it isn't
like she utilizes nature in her art but rather gets inspiration
from natural phenomenom.
The kids found out they could get free ice cream outside so I
was able to rush through the Museum of Fine Arts too.
One of the days, we went to the Galleria, the huge block-long
mall where there's a gundy store :) I checked the gundy store
again for yellow gundies but there weren't any, just a v. cute
new blue gundy that I hadn't met before. There's an ice rink
and the younger one was bothering to go skate (even though he
doesn't know how). Thankfully, my aunt (not the mother) said
she would take care of it. The wailing and utter screaming
was enough to draw 3 security officers, one w/ a cart. I wonder
what by-standers think, do they think, "What a bad mother" or
"What an unruly brat"? My aunt was dubbed "the bad aunt"
by the kid for the rest of his stay. I have no idea what
went on bec. I quickly fled the scene.
Meanwhile, my mother and I went into Origins, a sort of
The Body Shop kind of shop, got our hands washed in sea
salt. My mother bought something called a Zen Board, which
is for Chinese calligraphy. It's like an Etch-a-Sketch,
but with rice paper and a calligraphy brush. When the
paper dries, the calligraphy strokes vanish, so it's
for practicing. Has anyone seen these before? Bec.
my mother actually wants a bigger one to practice Chinese
painting. The one she got is letter paper size.
I also got a silver dragonfly headband at Lord and Taylors.
It seems like all the manufacturers are jumping on this
bandwagon. I saw a huge spider clip by Liz Claiborne.
I wondered how ppl would feel about ants, bees, and
mosquitoes in hair. A girl said, "It doesn't really
matter what's in your hair, just that it's sparkly."
Today at Fashion Bug, I got a spider headband for about
$1.75. I like it a lot.
Later on, the kid was smiling and running around the Disney
store. We stopped by my aunt's and she gave me some
peacock feathers she had bought at an Indian store a long
time ago. I thought maybe they were fake and all the
adults were like, huh? They decided it was because I
had never seen a bird killed or plucked a chicken or
done any of that. Anyway, the peacocks feathers look great
w/ the BLACK silk flowers.
Since I didn't mention what happened to some of the flowers
I bought... The vase is a Chinese vase, blue and it looks
quite interesting in itself. The BLACK flowers are zinnias
with purple stamen, purple freesias are providing some lines
as does the dried stvf, the big dried huge mushroom-looking
bulbs and smaller redbrown ones. Plus, there are the BLACK silk
buds and some leaf material.
I've started reading another flower arrangement book. This one
combines fruits and vegetables and such. (One uses satay sticks
for the fruit). I think this will be inconvenient since fruit
will rot. Definitely, cut flowers are a lot more to deal with
than the artificial ones. But I got some ideas about the
flowertree kind of arrangement, that there should be some kind
of twig netting near the foam ball so that the foam doesn't
slip down the sticks (the stem).
That day, my aunt took us to one of the more famous steak
houses. The last time, we had to wait 2 1/2 hours to get
a table, so for them to immediately have a table for 8 ppl
was incredible. I think the fates aligned then bec. I didn't
think I could stand one more minute of those GameBoy noises.
AAghh!
At least I found a Werefrogs UK import single for $1 this week.
Someone is willing to pay $10 for a Werefrogs single so
I feel quite pleased abt this. Plus, I got a free book with
the purchase.
Next week will be a Theatre District Open House. That's when
the theatres do their little promo thing. I think that's
when Madeleine (not the one on a.g.f. but on rosenoir)
bought this extravagant gown from the Opera company.
The theatres (ballet, opera, etc.) clear out their
wardrobes and it gets sold at discounted prices.
I think I would like to go to that.
So that's the highlights o' my week. I'm here with
the (mostly) well-behaved gundy and was listening
to Shed Seven... Maybe my newsreader will start
behaving again too!

i saw on hgtv that ripening fruit give off a gas (no puns please) that makes
cut flowers wilt more quickly.
i have a little topiary thing that was a xmas deal until i pulled the top
off.
its got 3 twigs as the trunk and theyre turned so they angle out slightly at
the top. it is quite small, less than 5 inches tall, and i think the spread
on the trunk twigs will keep the top from sliding down.
just a thought, havent made the darn thing yet though,

YES. I still have my regular set also! From 1984!
And the scariest thing is that ...
I also have a set of New Kids on the Block Fashion Plates!
AAAAAAHHHHH!

Yes. that is why if there is rotting fruit in the arrangement
it is important to replace it with a fresh fruit immediately.

It definitely depends on how sizable the "tree" will be. For such
a small "tree" you may not have a slippage problem.

I think I can match you or raise you on the scary fashion play items!
Somewhere, I have one of the David Cassidy dress-up sets, the kind
where there were these somewhat magnetic clothes and one just stuck
clothes on him.
Heh.
