From all of the talk about hideous prom dresses being ripped
apart and modified, I was wondering "what makes a hideous
prom dress?" Now I know that (I think it was Thess) we
should wear what we want if we are comfortable and able to
walk with out head high, but I'm wondering if the two
dresses that I own fall into the "hideous" category. I'm
not saying that I'm going to throw these puffy beauties
away; just wondering what exactly makes a prom dress fit the
hideous.

Both of mine are calf length with the featherweight lined
strapless bodices. One is pink chiffon with the required
tulle underskirt. The bodice is cut with two peaks (one
above each breast) and the material is softly gathered in a
horizontal direction that it softly drapes. There are 5
small silk roses stitched to the bodice in a diagonal
direction. The other is red-red. The bodice is make out of
red velvet and the hip portion of the skirt is also made of
red velvet. The lower portion of the skirt is red tulle,
with a red lining under so the legs can't be seen, and the
upper portion of the bodice is decorated with a gathered
piece of tulle across the breasts. Once again 4 velvet
roses are sewn across the top of the bodice.

I have only worn each twice, but each time I have received
complements on them. One of my friends, who I didn't know
at the time, said that she knew that I must be interesting
if I wore something like that out. My guy however, still
prefers that I don't wear them. Hmmm.

But that's not my question. My poll IS what makes a prom
dress HORRENDOUS?

Well, when i think hideous, I imagine those 80's taffeta monstrosities that
make you look like you have no legs, no boobs, and no waist...the hemlines and
necklines are a nightmare and the poofy bows and roses that are invariably on
there are always misplaced.

In retrospect, the prom dress I wore to my senior prom in 1987 is pretty
horrendous. Certainly if I saw it on a thrift-store rack today, I'd gag &
laugh! But, at the time, it was perfect -- it was the least likely thing
that anyone else in my school would wear, which was exactly what I wanted.

It was a strapless minidress with a straight underskirt & a poufy overskirt
that was short in the front & long in the back. It had the requisite giant
assbow. But most of all, it was entirely made in GOLD LAME.

Don't ask me *why* I chose gold lame; I still can't figure it out myself!
I didn't like gold colored stuff any better than I do now (which is to say,
not at all). But the dress was un-conservative and obnoxious as all get
out, which was pretty much what I dreamed of at that time. I wore it with
a giant gold-backed rhinestone necklace & matching earrings, opera-length
gold lame gloves, a vintage gold lame lunch-bag style purse, and my hair
mohawk style & sprayed w/frightening amounts of gold glitter.

Scarey just to think about it.

>My poll IS what makes a prom

First off, I have to clarify that "hideous" prom dresses are a *good* thing in
my world. :} Usually I'll describe them as "charmingly hideous" or
"delightfully frightening" or somesuch, just to make it clear that I strive for
that sort of thing when I'm dressing.

Defining what exactly makes a dress "delightfully hideous" is a bit difficult,
but AFAIAC, they're the ones that are rather overwrought & just a bit too
flamboyant for conventional fashion wisdom, but still have an ineffable sense
of style to them. Generally they combine several elements of potential fashion
over-kill: poofy skirts, built-in crinolines, butt-bows (thank you, Penny, for
the technical term :} ), taffeta, lace, velvet, lame, tulle, polka-dots,
sequins, bright/contrasting colors... Think mid-80's Cyndi Lauper.

There are, of course, prom dresses that I honestly think *are* hideous, but
it's almost impossible to say exactly where I draw the line (other than, say,
1980 ;} )

If you like your dresses, and like to wear them, they are not hideous
prom dresses.

If I look at a dress and physically cringe, the dress is horrendous
(at least in my opinion).

IMNSHO, characteristics of a truly awful gown include:

- Ass bows
- Huge satin roses stuffed with crinoline
- assymetrical hiplines, with overly large decorations at the hip
- colours like Pepto Bismol pink, chartreuse, or orange (or any
combination of the three *shudder*)
- ostentatious floral prints
- extra frills at the hips, which will give absolutely anyone an
enormous ass
- cheap fabric
- an overload of sequins and paillettes

If a dress has all of these characteristics, run!

If it only has one or two, it _might_ be passable, but I wouldn't
count on it.

From your descriptions, your two dresses don't sound too bad...

but lord, you want to see scary prom dresses? 1965-onwards.
Particularly the dresses in the prom scenes of Sixteen Candles and Pretty in
Pink (I love the movie, and I love Iona's dress that Andie uses to make the
hideous thing she ends up wearing... she should have just worn Iona's dress
with no modifications... but noooooo.)

That's better than my dress! Mine was the dreaded Pepto Bismol pink,
was _way_ too lowcut for someone as flat-chested as myself, and had
the asymmetrical hip with gaudy rhinestoned hip bow.

Luckily, I never actually wore it. I didn't go to the prom.

My junior high dress was much prettier: powder blue, floor length,
with an off-the-shoulder top.

I can't imagine wearing powder blue or Pepto pink anymore. I really
don't have the colouring for it. Pale colours (aside from pure white)
lend a nasty greenish cast to my skin. That's what I get for having
an olive complexion, hmm?

Here's what I remember:

--hoop skirts (I remember one girl unable to get thru the gym door)
--pastel dotted-Swiss chiffon (little fuzzy flocked polka-dots)
--cheap, scratchy lace, and lots of it
--giant shoulderpads with puffed, short sleeves ala "Dynasty"
--pastel-dyed pumps (always ill-fitting)
--white or pastel patterned stockings -- lace, polka dot, or with satin
bows glued on the ankles
--cheap crinkly metallic fabric in silver, gold, bright pink, electric
blue, or green. One year a high-school archenemy stuffed herself into an
unflattering puffy, strapless silver-crinkled-lame number, and I recall
being so cruel as to refer to her as "the baked potato". But honestly --
all the outfit needed to be complete was a generous pat of butter on her
head and a few chives.
--and for the bois, three little words: MIAMI VICE TUXEDO [1].

I am greatly annoyed by the modern prom fashions, which are mostly
tasteful tank dresses without a bow or hoop in sight. It's not fair...you
kids have to suffer like WE suffered!

Wow... that sounds too cool for words...

As for HORRENDOUS - well, the worst thing about prom dresses (for me) is the
fact that they rarely fit properly. It seems to work thusly: Girl imagines
perfect dress. Girl looks for dress. Girl finds dress, and discovers that she
doesn't have the body type for it. Girl wears dress anyway.

I have a hysterical picture of my friends 'n' me with our dates for prom - they
are all wearing pastels, and they are all skinny (no boobs or bust). I'm
wearing red, I'm in a size 18 dress, and my tits are filling out the dress
almost too much. At the time I felt fat. Looking at the picture now, I feel
great. Who knew?

Bad fit will kill a dress every time.

Woah Girl! That sounds way out there! I would have completely loved
you in that outfit! I love it when people wear something completely
out there.

I was safer, I guess...

Senior Prom-

enormous sholderpads, but the back was almost completely cut out. Yeah

Maybe it was ugly. Shapeless. God-awful pink. But hell, no one else looked
even vaguely like that. I have never seen a dress like that on anyone,
anywhere. :-)
So maybe it wasn't pretty, but it was original.

Oh yeah? I was in the midst of my heavy metal days and desperately trying
to get the attention of my bodybuilder boyfriend. I had my dress made for
me.
It was black patterned (jaquard? maybe..)
low cut, with spaghetti straps (braided with tiny antique gold sequins)
tight (tight!) to just under the hipbone then
short fluffy skirt of black and gold lace
teamed up with
pointy black high heels with a zipper running up the center (open sides)
and bicep length black gloves with pearl buttons at the wrist...
and a gold choker of my mother's
and I may have had lee press on nails in some harlot red....

Well, these particular ones were those divided doors: two regular
school-size doors, but with a metal bar down thru the middle, so even when
both doors were opened, there was still an obstruction. And said girl's
hoop was 6' in diameter at least (tall girl, hence a long skirt, which
became a huuuge wide skirt).

She *did* get in eventually -- not sure if she had to remove the hoop, go
in, and then bring the hoop thru and put it on inside, or just flash her
petticoats to all and sundry by twisting the hoop until it was vertical,
or maybe go in another door behind the gym...

Ack... All these sound vastly better than mine, ass-bows and all. My
dress was the *reason* I didn't go to prom.

It was strapless, with that 'm' shaped top (I don't know what this is
called on a strapless dress...), uber-pale flesh pink satin, floor
length, ruffles along the top of the bodice and on the skirt, and
zipped up the back and laced up the front. It matched my skin. I
looked like I was naked when I was wearing it. Did i mention that I
loathe pink?

My mother picked it out, bought it and brought it home without telling
me. My dad said I could borrow his old tux and pin it in for the
occasion, since my date was going to be wearing tie-dye (Small town
high school, all the weirdos hung out together). Mom found out.. and
said no ticket if I didn't wear the dress. I said no (like an idiot..I
could have lied, but I was too bullheaded for that..), so no ticket. I
don't remember if Aram went or not... Don't think so, though.

I missed some of my freinds getting into a fight with some of the
cheerleaders in the bathroom and getting thrown out. Very John Hughes.

hmmm... my junior prom dress was a short, princess-seamed,
off-the-shoulder dark purple brocade-type material number
with purple tulle underneath to make it stand out a bit. the
most interesting thing about the dress is that it had this
weird trim around the neck and shoulders: the trim pattern
was a grapevine with tiny little grapes!

i also wore black tights, black flats (comfort, baby!), and
a silver necklace of some sort, and my hair was done up in
this weird french twist type thing with a sprig of black
fake flowers.

for my senior ball, my mum made me a nice long black
sleeveless dress with a high collar, onto which some a tiny
bit of sequin trim was sewn. very plain and nice. wore it
with black stockings and flats again, and long black satin
gloves (if only i still had them!).

i still like both dresses, and i'd still wear them if only i
hadn't lost about 15 pounds since high school. they're both
too big!! but that's another rant.

I missed the first posts here, but I'll assume it's a
what-did-you-wear poll...

Junior Year: Above-knee sheath dress of black brocade, with
off-the-shoulder "bands" instead of sleeves. Heavy white lace trim
covered the bands, and arced down into an ornate "V" in front of the
breasts. I wore it with black stockings, black heels, deep red
lipstick and polish and a deep red corsage. And this was before I
knew that "goth" existed...

Senior Year: What I call my "torch singer" dress. A floor-length
emerald green satin sheath, with an off-the-shoulder layer gathered
right at the cleavage with a large pearl and rhinestone brooch.
Oh golly, I do believe I have a photo of it online, from when I wore
it again to the Honors College Geek Prom at MSU. Whee, Mardi Gras!:

I wore the same black moiré princess seamed dress with scallop-edged
off-the-shoulder neckline and a full skirt to below the knee to both proms.
I looked pretty good, but the neckline alteration spoiled the scallops. I
had to have it taken in so that it wouldn't gap horribly. I was very
modest, and my date was a full foot taller than me.

All I remember is that the prom was horribly dull (aside from sneaking into
the teachers' lounge to neck with my date), and several queen bitches came
up to me to tell me how nice I looked now that I was wearing makeup, and
that I should wear it to school. To which I responded, "Wow, that's funny.
I'm wearing the *same* makeup that I wear every day."

thought that they were being pleasant. And also very glad to be out of high
school.

Yes! I have wanted a civil war style hoop skirt so big I can barely
walk for the weight of my skirts. Yeah.

My largest Renaissance Festival hoop skirt has been modified
somewhat...

If you take a standard bridal store hoop, which has a bottom of about
120 inches, good for Tudor and Elizabethan, and cut open one side of
the skirt...you can then add a triangular panel to it, add more casing
for the bones, and use an old hoop skirt boning collection to add
fullness to the bones enclosed. ( oor you can order hoop boning and
replace all of it.) I added a yard to mine ;) It is really enormous,
a nd I love it.

Yeah, I'm glad I'm not in high school anymore either. When we got our yearbooks
my senior year, a group of us were standing around signing and looking at each
other's pix. I looks skinny and uncomfortable in my stupid off the shoulder
whatever that they make you wear.
But everyone thought I looked great and were saying so when this bitch says
"Yeah, what a great picture, you don't look a thing like it!"

We don't have prom here, but we have a party that is quite similar (I
think). It takes the whole day beginning at the school and then
continuing usually in restaurant and then someplace where most people
will get quite drunk *sigh* Anyway, idea is to dress in "old-fashioned"
way (or in as good imitation as you can manage) which mostly means
dresses that resemble those that were worn in 1700's and 1800's (for
girls, boys wear usually just suits). There are sometimes gowns from
older era, but they are more rare. My dress was an old theatre costume
borrowed from the friend. It had off-the-shoulders little sleeves, thigh
bodice and full skirt with enough tulle underneath to make it big. It
was made of black lace over dark purple satin. I got tons of compliments
during that day. It's been five years and I still think I have never
looked as pretty as then. Wish I could have dress like that someday...

It's replies to posts like this that make me *really* glad I graduated
in 1997. Sophomore year I had this gorgeous off-the-shoulder short
sleeve black velvet fitted thing with a white sparkly applique on
front. Junior year, sky blue satin stripped down Cinderella dress (will
be making a comeback at the ball at C5! Bet I'll be the only one there
in sky blue... ;) ). Senior year, forest green velvet spaghetti
strapped thigh high slit Jessica Rabbitt-esque dress that I never got to
wear (I got stood up!!)

I was lucky to have a really pretty prom dress. For years I had drooled
over the Jessica McClintock gowns, and I got one for my prom. It was
off-the-shoulder, black brocade, knee-lenth, with a fitted skirt and
tight bodice that came down in a v shape to my cleavage. The neckline was
edged with drippy, gorgeous white lace. I still have the gown (and may
wind up selling it on ebay -- now's certainly the time!), but sadly, it
doesn't fit me anymore. :(

You mean there's three? I was convinced it was two; pseudo corset top with
"full" skirt or slinky long dress with "fashion forward" detailing.

No really. I swear. I've seen prom dresses online described as "fashion
forward."
...But if it is, does it need to be described as such?

I'm feeling some weird urge to feed this thread. I left HS before the prom, and
my school didn't have a jr. prom, so all you lucky people get to hear about my
5th grade graduation pseudo-prom dress!

I think it was in 90 or 91.. hm. Well, I'm 18 now so I guess that's about
right. My dress was this strapless [well, it could be worn with the spaghetti
straps or not] black thing. The whole bodice was shirred [I hope that's the
right term! It was kind of puffystretchy all over, from gathers all over] with
a low waist and a full, flouncy skirt. The best part was.. an underskirt or 2
of floofy white with black polkadotted material, that could be pulled up on the
right side and buttoned there. I thought it was great.. a "cool teenager"
dress! Remember, i was in 5th grade, this dress didn't exactly flatter a
flatchested, uncurvy, chubby little girl.

Topped it off with a french braid [complete with feathered bangs]. Gawd, what
was I thinking?

-nikole, still flatchested and chubby.. and probably looked older in 5th grade
than now..

dear god, i agree. our equivalent is the 'debs' (debutantey thing, i
suppose) which is held the autumn after you graduate high school.

i wish mine had been in the 80s. almost every single girl in my year
was wearing a long, dark (navy, black, or brown) halter neck dress.
jesus, there was *no* imagination.

out of about 300 dresses, me and my best mate were the only people who
revealed our ankles.

i dunno what the etiquette for formal wear is, but i had on a kookai
dress, it was petrol blue, with a glittery petrol blue lace overlay
which went about 2 inches over the dress proper. sleeveless, tank
style, very low cut, about midthigh. lots of silver and rhinestone
jewelry, big hair. velvet jacket. all clothes borrowed.

i still wanted to be courtney love at this stage, hence the lacy
revealing nightie style dress. i would've worn a tiara, if my date had
let me.

the best part is the shoes. i still have the box, which reads 'PEEP
TOE PLATFORM SANDALISED COURT ANKLE STRAP', which, i suppose,
describes them well. black velvety stuff. :)

Greets,

I have no clue how to sew, but fortunately my mom does. I was just
flipping pattern books looking for something that i thought I may be
able to make something cool form and what did I find?

Simplicty 8619!!!!!!!

Its very 'medieval baebes' with humongous flouce sleeves. Its
absolutely gorgeous! It was featured in prom 99 designs. On the one
hand I'm pleased like pickles because I can have this dress for under
the typical $300 cdn retail... on the other hand its kinda sad knowing
a bunch of spicegirls will be trotting around in this come prom time
=-( I'm just such a goth-snob ;-)

Cheers!

yeah, aand what about all the other well made stuff she apparantly made
herself in that movie? I can't recall anything off the top of my head, as
it's been since June that I saw Pretty in Pink.

it's as if they purposely made it look like a bad home sewn job, just to
somehow get the point across.
*gah*
I always hated that dress.
I knew someone in HS who wanted to copy it for the Prom. bad bad idea.

Hey, I just bought the new one. :) Whoever posted about there only being two
styles was right...the, as Seventeen calls it, "corset" top with a tulle skirt
is all the rage, apparently.

I went to two proms, and wore black to both. One was a Canadian designer
dress, sleeveless with buttons down the front and layers on the back of the
skirt that you "lifted" with ties inside the dress that went around your
waist. The second was borrowed from my mom...a slip dress with a sheer top
that crossed at the front and tied around. My mother sometimes has good
taste, and it's great that she's not so thin that her clothes don't
occasionally fit me (her being approx. 5'3, me being 5'8.)
