Plan shocks Charles
By Jane Kerr
PRINCE William wants to live in Africa for two years when he leaves
university.
Wills has told friends that he plans to work with endangered wildlife,
probably in Kenya, where he spent his gap year.
But his dream has not gone down well with Prince Charles or Buckingham
Palace.
Charles and his aides had expected William, 21, to begin royal duties
after he graduates from St Andrew's. A source said yesterday: "That he
wants to go for two years was quite a shock for his father.
"Most people are hoping that he'll change his mind so everyone's being
careful not to put too much pressure on him.
"But it's obvious that he loves Africa. He talks about it all the time
and he definitely wants to go for two years."
William's plan emerged as Clarence House confirmed he had dropped his
history of art degree course. He has decided to switch to geography
for his final two years at university.
A source said: "He's been thinking about giving up history of art for
quite a while and during the summer holidays he made up his mind."
Another source added: "Obviously the Prince of Wales is disappointed.
He feels a lot of time has been invested in it and it has come to
nothing."
William's plan to spend more time in Africa was strengthened during
his summer holidays in Kenya and Uganda, when he came under fire for
spearing a small dik-dik deer.
But Wills has told friends that one of the attractions of going to
Africa is that he would avoid the media spotlight for at least another
two years.
William has been particularly taken by the work at an exclusive ranch
in Kenya owned by the father of his friend Jecca Craig.
He was given conservation training there during his gap year two years
ago. At the time, Ian Craig said: "He did everything from rhino
spotting, to anti-poaching patrols to checking fences. He's a great
boy and enthusiastic."
The move makes any idea of William following royal tradition and
joining a regiment or the Navy, unlikely.
If he gets his way, his long-term plan is to concentrate on
countryside issues, including the workings of his father's Duchy of
Cornwall estate. =====
I doubt Harry will enter the military either...Sandhurst is most
likely a smoke screen similar to the one employed by William early on.
These Brothers mean to live a life of Doing, not going through the
motions.
That's handy...
=====================
I don't see what's wrong with changing one's major at all. Better to
change it and be happy with your coursework than slog through
something just to oblige others. In any case, the boys changes in
direction, IMO, is not unusual. Not every young person has the
opportunity to do as William is proposing. So -- after university,
then two years in Africa, then possibly military/naval service. Why
not?
It's not as though there's a shortage of royals to carry out official
engagements. In fact, it has been commented that there are too many
royals and not enough "work," and that the Queen is hard put to find
suitable causes for her relatives.

Why not, indeed! And if it is true that he wants to work with
endangered wildlife, we may see a change in his attitude (and actions)
re hunting (not just foxes, anything!). IOW for two years, at least, he
would be seen not only to be doing something (as in a job) but something
good (saving endangered species). Now why exactly would Charles be
"shocked" at this?
yD
William's "job" is to be a Royal, i.e. to perform royal duties. He was granted
an exemption to finish his education with the expectation that once he had he
would begin doing his "job".It now appears he wants another extension- and then
what? Another one? And then another?
He needs to make clear that either he has no intention of EVER performing any
Royal duties until he is Prince of Wales or get on with his "job".

Don't you think it's because the idea has been widely bruited that William
would take up royal duties OR enter the services when he left University?
Perhaps they feel he will be seen to be shirking royal or military life for
personal wishes.

LOL Like father like son, eh? Nope! If he (William) doesn't have
'something' to do -- even when he does the royal job (of opening places
and things) he'll just be hanging around waiting for someone to die so
he can move up -- cut more ribbons, show his face here and there and
shake a few hands.
I read a few weeks back that he doesn't want to go into the military,
since Harry apparently does, why should William be forced to do that?
Apart from getting a uniform he can wear on those royal occasions when
he will be doing his, um, job?
Nah! Let one of them do something useful (saving endangered animals --
rather than kill animals for fun and pleasure). And in this instance,
money will not be diverted.

Of course ! It's certaainly perplexing that William is expected to take up
Royal duties FAR earlier than his Father ever did ! Charles hung about at
uni and on hols with half-naked women for years after he became PoW.
Then there's the Jealousy Factor. Charles has stated he feels overwhelmed by
William's popularity and cannot cope with it. William can't abide the empty
lives lived by some of those he encounters at his Royal residences.
William's absence will solve both problems.
Well stated. William shall retain all that's he learned of Art History ...
it makes for a good Minor, as they say over here. His hands on work will
benefit all concerned.
Charles even refused permission to the Queen to allow William to appear with
her at intervals throughout the Jubilee year. He wants William relegated to
the backgound...William has complied on his own terms.
William and Harry plan on putting the Emphasis on the Wales' motto: Ich Dien
Their version of it. =)
> her at intervals throughout the Jubilee year.<snip>
That is completely untrue. He AND William were unwilling to allow the 'grey
men' to 'use' William to promote popularity for the Jubilee.
I don't have any problem with him doing something 'useful' in his spare time
but I think he's in danger of being seen as a dilettante, however worthwhile
that work might be.
I think our younger royals, however close in line to the throne, should be
getting 'proper jobs' now. Other European royals do so and I'm coming more
and more to think that British royalty should, too.
This semi-charitable work which is also a personal interest doesn't sit too
well in the modern world, is my concern.
IIRC both the PoW and Pss Anne started royal duties at around 18 or 19. She,
famously, made some remark about how difficult it was at such a young age to
be told to just walk around and 'talk to people'.
There is no real need for William to do *that* yet but I think there is a
need for him to be seen to learn about working life in Britain or in one of
his future realms, not just in Africa. I'm sure there are parts of the
Commonwealth which could do with his support in wildlife concerns.
The other thing is that William, or St J's or someone who keeps telling us
what William IS going to do, keeps changing their mind and moving the
goalposts. First, he's going to take up royal duties after Uni, then he's
going to go into the services after Uni because it will give him more time
to be private, now he's going to Africa to do what he wants to do most.
Which is it? People want Charles to move over and make William King? I
DON'T think so!
Now this sounds fishy to me -- 50 years on the throne and William gets a
bit huffy about doing his duty to the Queen and/or his grandmother?

It's not only 'fishy', it has been made up...Here's the actual case:
Golden Jubilee clash over Prince William
By Andrew Alderson, Chief Reporter, and Joe Murphy, Political Editor
(Filed: 12/08/2001)
THE Prince of Wales will resist pressure from senior members of the Royal
Household who want Prince William to play a significant role in the Queen's
Golden Jubilee celebrations next year.
"Some of the Queen's most senior advisers at Buckingham Palace believe that
Prince William's ability to capture the public imagination could be the key
to a successful year of festivities throughout 2002.
They hope the Prince, 19, will make several public appearances during the
year, including some at the Queen's side. Courtiers are convinced he will
appeal particularly to younger people.
Prince Charles, however, according to his senior aides, is determined to
protect his elder son from being exploited to "save" the Golden Jubilee
celebrations, which have encountered early setbacks. There is private
anxiety at Buckingham Palace that the monarchy will be harmed if the Golden
Jubilee celebrations flop.
Prince Charles, say his advisers, is determined that William should
concentrate on his studies and believes his son is still too young to play a
leading public role.
The anticipated role for Prince William is already causing friction between
Buckingham Palace and St James's Palace, where the Queen and Prince Charles
have their respective private offices.
One of the Queen's most senior aides confirmed last week that advisers at
Buckingham Palace are seeking a significant part for Prince William in the
Jubilee celebrations.
"We hope he will play a big role," said one, "but we know this is a delicate
area and something that will have to be handled carefully."
"But they haven't asked him or his father about it. In terms of any formal
role, I suspect there will be one occasion during the year when they [the
Royal Family] will all get together publicly but, other than that, I would
be very surprised if Prince William gets involved.
"Prince Charles takes the view that Prince William shouldn't have a formal,
public role until he has completed his education. That doesn't mean he won't
do the odd thing with his father, but doing something on his own - or with
the Queen - is very unlikely." End of quote
William was not consulted. He didn't have the luxury of making his own
decision - Charles traded an appearance by William at the Jubilee Concerts
for an invitation for Camilla to be seen in the Royal box.
Another quote: "William and Harry at first hoped to arrange their own trip
to Klosters with friends, but aides ordered a rethink".-This quote is from
earlier this year when they were ordered to 'bond' with Camilla because
Charles was 'desperate' for them to like her.
William nor Harry can open and read their own mail. Naturally they have
staff to vet letters and cards...BUT then Camilla or someone on her staff
decide Which letters they may read !!! That was in The Independent a few
months ago!!
It isn't any wonder they both have opted to go as far away as possible from
their Dictators.
Think back. When the whole Jubilee thing was announced, being planned etc.,
there was an element of panic that it would be a damp squib. At that point
and in our papers, there were the stories that the 'grey men' had the bright
idea of using William as a focus for the 'yoof' of Blair's Britain. Not
surprisingly, both William (who, as we see, even now wishes to shun the
limelight) and his father said they would not allow him to be used as a
shop window attraction.
In the event, the whole thing was a huge success, HM shone in her own right
- exactly as it should have been - and William was seen as just one of her
grandchildren - as it should have been. He most certainly did do his duty
by his grandmother and Sovereign; he was there but what he did NOT do was
allow himself to be used as a sort of 'teaser' for the main event. IMO,
that was a right and proper decision.
