Through April 16th, 2000, the New Jersey State Museum in Trenton
is hosting "Unseen Treasures: Imperial Russia and the New World," an
exhibition of more than 300 priceless art objects and artifacts from
the collections of the Russian State Historical Museum and the State
Archive of the Russian Federation in Moscow.
None of these objects, including tsarist treasures, has been
seen outside Russia before.
Highlights of the exhibition include the Tula steel armchair of
Alexander I; the Baroque coronation sleigh of Catherine the Great; court
costumes and jewels; historic icons; historic oil paintings of imperial
St. Petersburg; a gilt and bejeweled bishop's miter; relics of St.
Innokenty, Russian Orthodox evangelist of Alaska, and a hand-written
letter by Thomas Jefferson to an official of the Russian-American
Company, a trading enterprise founded in 1799.
The New Jersey State Museum is at 205 W. State Street in
