LONDON, England (UPI) -- A controversial Princess Diana portrait by
artist Stella Vine has been snatched up by British pop star George
Michael for about $45,000.

The painting of the late princess in an evening gown has words in the
background saying: "Murdered? Pregnant? Embalmed?" hellomagazine.com
reported Tuesday.

"He saw it on my Web site," Vine said. "I was inspired to paint it
after reading Diana`s body was embalmed, destroying any possible
evidence she may have been pregnant."

Michael paid 25,000 pounds -- $44,635 -- for the artwork.

Michael was a friend of the late princess and in 1995 headlined A
Concert For Hope, which she had organized to raise money for AIDS
charities.

My impression of George Michael was that he loved Diana very much, so I
guess this shows what he thinks. That song he wrote that is on the
Diana tribute album is past beautiful. When I heard it, I realized I
had grossly underestimated him.

"Tell me about the Diana painting.

The Diana painting came from a newspaper. Paul Burrell was revealing a
letter he had from Diana saying that she thought she was going to be
killed by a head injury and I just went home that night and painted it
straightaway. I've been doing a lot of paintings about the crash over
that three day period. I did the car crash, without her in it, just a
car. I did the boys, I did Paul Burrell with the Queen, and a lot of
Masonic stuff. I was almost at a point where I was doing aliens ... you
know, the whole conspiracy theory thing."

Apart from the fact it looks like it was painted by a 12 year old?
Certainly not worth $45K.

G Michael most definitely has too much money to blow on punk pictures.

One critic is quoted as saying "she can't paint for toffee". One
wonders if she would have achieved the "notoriety" she has but for the
controversial subject matter like her Diana pictures, the drug addict
etc. Much like Tracy Emin and Damien Hirst they came to the fore
because of the shock value.

I don't see Vine's portraits as nearly as radical as those of Lucian
Freud who painted the Queen, Kate Moss et al.
I MUCH prefer Vine.

However radical his portraits I doubt there are few who would argue
that Freud lacked talent.

No wonder Elton John dumped him :-)
What a piece of garbage (No, not G.M. - the "painting").

I can't see where it *could* have *ever* been well done, with the stupid
graffiti on it.
Tacky at BEST.

You Have Been Loved

She takes the back road and the lane
Past the school that has no changed
In all this time
She thinks of when the boy was young
All the battles she had won
Just to give him life

That man
She loved that man
For all his life
But now we meet to bring him flowers
And only God knows why

For what's the use in pressing palms
When children fade in mother's arms
It's a cruel world
We've so much to loose
And what we have to learn we rarely choose

So if it's God who took her son
He cannot be the one living in her mind

Take care my love, she said
Don't think that God is dead
Take care my love, she said

You have been loved

If I was weak, forgive me
But I was terrified
You brushed my eyes with angels wings, full of love
The kind that makes devils cry

So these days
My life has changed
And I'll be fine
But she just sits and counts the hours
Searching for her crime

So what's the use of pressing palms
If you won't keep such love from harm
It's a cruel world
You've so much to prove
And heaven helps the ones who wait for you

Well I've no daughters, I've no sons
Guess I'm the only one
Living in my life

Take care my love, he said
Don't think that God is dead
Take care my love, he said

You have been loved

Art is VERY subjective. The three who have said they don't like it are
quite a bit older, that may have something to do with it.
I always thought Picasso lacked talent until I saw his very early
landscapes and portraits at the Museo Picasso in Barcelona - they were
the most beautiful I have ever seen - he made me appreciate the
different. I dont' hate Vine's at all - I would love to know more.

Naturally Vine is under-valued by some. All the great artists have
been.
Contrary to Vol's opinion, I see no talent in Freud...simply another
'artist' like Warhol who made it.
I prefer Hockney and a bazillion others to the ugliness that flows from
Freud.
In my view, Vine is streets ahead of him in every conceivable medium
and manner.
