Trapped in her car as it sped out of control towards on-coming traffic,
a New Hampshire woman said today that it was a childhood lesson from her
dad that prompted her to make the life and death decision to bail out
with just seconds to spare.

"It was a horrific day... I was on the highway and all of the sudden my
car began to accelerate out of control," 25-year-old Rebecca Storm told
"Good Morning America" today in an exclusive interview. "I knew I was
going to be approaching traffic so I knew I needed a solution right
away."

In a harrowing 911 call, Storm tells a dispatcher that her 1998 Honda
Civic is out of control and asks if she should purposefully get in a
wreck. The dispatcher tells her to wait so he can tell her how to stop,
but she didn't have enough time to wait.

Hoping to keep other drivers from being harmed, Storm said she aimed the
car at a large pole and prepared to jump.

"I opened up the car door and I undid my seatbelt. I looked out and you
have that moment of 'Is this my best option?'" she said. "Then I tucked
and rolled out, right into traffic."

Other than some bumps, bruises and damage to her teeth, Storm survived
the ordeal. She credits her father with her incredible survival, saying
that a long time ago he taught her "how to fall."

Did she do the right thing? In light of previous reports of
out-of-control vehicles, Consumer Reports released a demonstration for
exactly what to do if your car goes out of control including shifting to
neutral and turning the car's engine off, but Storm chose a more drastic
-- and potentially deadly -- solution.

Experts say the safest place to be in most accidents is in your vehicle.

Lesson That Saved Her Life
Storm said that as a child, she often sprained her ankle while playing
-- so much that her father took her out one day to teach her how to
"tuck and roll" to avoid injuries.

"I practiced falling and I tucked and rolled. Looking back at 25, it was
the most important lesson my dad ever taught me," she said.

"It saved my life."

Storm told ABC News' Boston affiliate WCVB-TV she did not know what
caused the sudden acceleration, but the car had gone in for repairs
twice in the last week.

This story does not have the "ring of truth". ABC has done a serious
disservice to its viewers in the manner that this story was presented.

Neutral, neutral, neutral!!!! How is it that GMA INTERVIEWED this woman
and listened to her say that she continued to apply her brakes, engaged
the emergency brake, AND called 911 and they NEVER ASKED HER if she
tried putting the car in neutral prior to exiting the vehicle???
Amazing, just amazing. I have a 2007 Toyota Camry and I have no
intention of taking it in for the "fix" because Toyota doesn't yet
understand the problem. My floor mat is not an issue and I don't want
them to reload my flash memory with new software because they might
INTRODUCE the problem. My Toyota has never manifested the issue.
However, just in case, I have practiced putting the car into neutral
MANY times while driving at 65 mph. It works just fine. Posted by:

It must have been a Toyota, right? noooo... thats why it wasnt
mentioned. ABC is crap. How do you not indict Honda on circumstantial
evidence like you did Toyota. Crap. Posted by:

HELLO! anyone else thinking failed suicide attempt? Why is she on the
news and not in a straight jacket? So your car is a piece of junk that
keeps going in for repair ... hmmm, Throw the car in neutral and floor
it! It won't go anywhere after that! ... or ... Just jump out of it? She
didn't kill anyone this time ... Please keep this ID10T off the road!

I wouldn't recommend diving out of a car unless it was headed for a
cliff. She's very lucky not to have been run over by another vehicle.

I can't believe GMA wasted valuable air time on this woman's story. What
she did was nothing short of stupid. With all the recent media coverage
detailing what to do if your car unexpectedly accelerates - brake, put
the car in neutral, continue to brake, pull over to the shoulder or off
the road, when the car is stopped, turn off the engine. Does this woman
live under a rock? And what was up with George S? He made her out to be
a hero, instead of chiding her for being so stupid. Posted by:

I totally agree with you. What she did was insanely stupid. Or maybe
criminally negligent.....suppose the car had run out of control and killed
an innocent bystander.

Uh... the car was _already_ running out of control. The only
difference would be whether she was in it or not when it killed the
bystander.

She had time to call 911, but not enough to shift the car to neutral or turn
the ignition off??? In a world where companies can be sued for selling hot
coffee, I think I can make the case that someone who jumps out of a moving
car instead of shifting it to neutral is negligent - especially if she had
time to call 911 and tell them she was going to aim it at a pole and jump
out.

Thus spake "C. E. White" <cewh...@mindspring.com> :

This sounds real hinky. Did she have some other sort of accident and
want to blame it on the car? Did she have an on purpose in hopes of
collecting money? Did she have "a tad too many" and wait until the
BAC was down?

In order of precedence

1) avoid the collision
2) hit something soft
3) avoid living animals
4) avoid humans
5) sidewipe

NEVER turn off the ignition. You lose all those neat power things
like steering and brakes and you will lock the steering, which some
folks might think to be "a bad thing" (folks like me)

unless you drive old cars, which are much more forgiving of such things.
I do have power steering in my Stude, but I've thought about swapping
it out for manual.
