ZEN question of the day: Would cable TV have been invented if Spider Sabich or
Carolyn Warmus had never existed?
It seems that every 16 minutes on cable there is some kind of true crime
documentary about either ski racer/lover/all-around fabulous guy Spider Sabich,
who was gunned down by international nobody Claudine Longet (ex-wife of Andy
Williams). Or yet another look into the life of Carolyn Warmus,
teacher/lover/murderer.
This week, it's Spider's turn again. Tonight's installment of "City
Confidential" called "Aspen, Colorado: Murder on the Slopes" focuses on the
murder - or rather the mistaken manslaughter - of the skier by the singer 25
years ago.
Man! Give it a rest, already. Unless you live in a box, you know that in 1976,
crazed-with-anger-Longet "mistakenly" shot her beau, who'd just asked her and
her three kids to move out of their home.
She mistakenly shot him in the bathroom, and possibly pulled the trigger twice.
She says he was going on a trip and was showing her how to fire the gun in case
an intruder came into the gated community in the no-crime town, while he was
gone. R-r-r-ight.
Anyway, the poor dead guy is dragged up yet again in A&E's misguided show which
is half travelogue, half "Investigative Reports" (which unlike this one, is one
of my favorite shows).
The idea behind "City Confidential" is to look back at some murder (usually
involving the rich and privileged) that has taken place in a city. In what
looks like just an excuse to promote Aspen, "City Confidential" throws in the
Spider Sabich murder, or rather, misdemeanor, which is the only crime this town
has ever seen - if you don't count the crimes against fashion committed by the
Hollywood crowd.
Aspen is king of this. And movie stars, it appears just go there to be made
fools of by the local dog-sled entrepreneurs.
Says one guy, "The only way to be famous in Aspen is not to come here famous,
but to earn it here." Oh please. What a crock. How do you earn it there? By
opening the most successful Gap? Get over yourselves.
Despite this - and even though they've all gotten rich off of the rich people
who "winter" there - the local county sheriff actually says on tonight's show,
"Change is evil." As evidenced by your refusal to change your hairstyle?
Or better, the elderly former mayor, a nice enough woman, disgusted with fame,
who says, "You know how it is - too many people fighting to sit next to Gary
Cooper."
Gary Cooper? Where? In Forest Lawn Cemetery?
Maybe I'm overly critical, but they lost me the minute they described Claudine
Longet as "an international star." Of what? "The Andy Williams Family
Christmas" specials?
Anyway, never one to miss an opportunity, or a man, Longet went on to marry her
defense attorney and live in Aspen.
And that, folks, is why I love New York. Everywhere else is just Iowa.
