Lindsay Lohan: I Haven't Had a Drink in a Week
TUESDAY DECEMBER 12, 2006 08:40AM EST
By Jenny Sundel

Lindsay Lohan had a good reason to be late for a holiday party at Hollywood
club Shag in on Monday. "I just left an AA meeting," she told PEOPLE.

"I've been going to AA, for a year by the way," she added. Why didn't she
say so until recently? "Well it's no one's business. That's why it's
anonymous!"

At the Angeleno magazine party for Nefarious Fine Jewelry's spring 2007
collection, Lohan scored more than $40,000 worth of bling, including a
"Spider Web" diamond necklace (pictured, left), a diamond ring and a pair of
diamond-encrusted aviator sunglasses.

"I haven't had a drink in seven days. Or anything. I'm not even legal to, so
why would I?" Lohan, 20, told PEOPLE. "I don't drink when I go to clubs. I
drink with my friends at home, but there's no need to. I feel better not
drinking. It's more fun. I have Red Bull."

But, she added, "I didn't feel bad before. I never felt bad. I just wanted
to, like, find a balance. I was out too much. I was too caught up. I mean,
I'm 20 years old. I was off from work, I was getting ready to start a film,
and I was like going out just to get it out of my system. I was going out
too much and I knew that, and I have more to live for than that."

Lohan said she hopes to shift the focus from her partying to her career. "I
was like, I don't want to be written about at these clubs with these people.
I work, I act, I have a living. That's what I do every day. I work every
single day."

Asked if she had advice for those seeking recovery from substance abuse,
Lohan said, "I think, don't do it for someone else. Do it for you, 'cause if
you do it for someone else you're going to relapse. It's not going to be a
change. You have to really do something if you want to do it and . if it
doesn't work, you're not meant to."

So she understands the anonymous part, but has failed to get the part
where she's supposed to be committed to not drinking. Apparently,
she's not getting a lot out of the meetings.

Well, a week without a drink is hard if you're an alcoholic, and as
long as she keeps going to meetings, hopefully, the time between drinks
will get longer.
A week's a week and an achievement.

she's been attending meetings for a year and only now has gotten around
to the one week sober point?

She might want to talk to her Mom, who made the announcement.

ROTFLMAO! If she truly believes that we are buying that, I invite her
to contact me- I have a bridge in Brooklyn I'd like to sell her.

That's a full week of sobriety talking and it is optomistic. It sounds
like she is buying into it, which is great. Keep it up- I hope that she
makes it. I really do.

A side note- my friend worked with her on Herbie Fully Loaded and said
that the title was definitely appropriate. He told me that unless she
found people willing to step in and help her, she would destroy
herself. He said her mom is an absolutele skanky nightmare.

I know people who've gone to rehab 14, 15 + times before they managed
to stay sober for any length of time, and others who go to AA for years
without getting more than a few days at a time. Hell, I know people
who drank in the shower! Honey, if you're a drunk, seven days without
a drink is a monumental achievement whether it took her a year or a
decade to do it. Also, I believe her father is an alcoholic, and who
knows who else in the family.
I agree, though, with those who've said announcing it might have been a
mistake since we'll all be watching and waiting for her to fall down
drunk again.
Good luck to her, anyway, it's only the beginning!

I spent 8 years married to a recovering alcoholic, and I understand the
mentality. She's been attending meetings for a year, though - it
doesn't sound like she has any sort of committment to sobriety.

I could have riffed on how disrespectful this is to those who really
try to get sober, by treating AA as if it is an appointment on one's
calendar, like for massage and manicures, rather than a program that
requires work and committment, but I gave her the benefit of the doubt,
because she is obviously a very troubled young woman.

Oh, I doubt too many people would consider her presence disrespectful,
after all, everyone at an AA meeting has been in the same boat and,
indeed, she (LL) may get extra attention precisely because she is still
drinking. I think when people are there because they have been
"sentenced" by a court to go to so-many AA meetings for a certain
amount of time, it's a bit of a waste of time; first because they
*have* to go and it's not a decision they've made themselves. I don't
know if LL made the decision herself, but if she's still going after a
year, something must be ringing true to her.
Troubled, indeed, and no-one to help her it seems.

Is it really necessary for her to drag her party self out to events
every night? Events that are filled with decadent Hollywood types of
drinkers, smokers, snorters, pill-poppers, shooters.....what have you?
Her big compromise is to go to every one of these dissipation sessions
without fail and just chug Red Bull? She could stay home a little and
read a book once in a while; maybe Bill W's ? hanging out with the fast
crowd can't help her bad habits much. And/or is there not one good guy
out there who could be a steadying force as a boyfriend or even
husband? Obviously her own family can't be looked to to bring the
sanity.........

But she's been going to AA for a year? Sounds like that's been working
out really well for her.

I guess it was a place to go and spend time with other boozehounds when
she wasn't passing out stone cold in hotel rooms or throwing things at
other club patrons.

Strawberry Quik. That just blows my mind.

In RSPW I came up with a list of other things you could cut your blow
with:

Pixie Stix/Lik-m-aid/Tang/Other
Metuamucil
Snuff (like the stuff you put in your nose snuff)
Wasabi - "The Pennance"
French Vanilla Cappucino Mix
Instant Iced Tea
Instant Coffee
Crystal Light, for those concerned about their weight
