I've also met the guy who played the Professor in Gilligan's Island on a
ferryboat to Seattle. He lives on the same island as my ex in laws.
I've also met Ann Rule (true crime author of Stranger Beside Me and Dead by

That's about it. Oh and i saw Russell Crowe when he was filming A Beautiful Mind
at Princeton.
Marlene
John Travolta........I don't care who the hell he sleeps with (and I did
meet Mike, his extremely burly bodyguard too), he's a very sweet human
being.
After the day's filming was over for Primary Colors I stood by his trailer
talking to Mike about how my favorite movie that year was Face-Off and how I
thought he and Nick Cage should win co-academy awards for one role. All of
a sudden this amazingly blue-eyed man sticks his head out of the open
doorway of the trailer and says so softly, "Thanks so much.....I really
appreciate that...." I almost fell out! I was a fan of Vinnie Barbarino in
the 70's.....I had the famous blue background poster on my wall in my teens!
He was so nice, and signed an autograph for me. Then he stood in the
drizzly rain and posed for several pictures hugging me and then some of the
security guards' wives and kids who came to the set. A set manager had to
tell him "we gotta go" about 4 times before he actually did, and apologized
to the ones he couldn't get to.
On the same set, I literally ran around the corner into Larry Hagman, who
just chuckled and said "don't worry about it, sweetie" when I humbly
apologized, and Emma Thompson (who I didn't recognize in a long man's style
shirt and no makeup), bummed a cigarette from me.
The previous evening we were at a shoot near downtown New Orleans, and at
dinner time all the crew went into a high-school cafeteria converted into a
movie-set-mess-hall. The food was incredible.....Lobsters, filet mignon,
you name it, and all us "little people" were eating like royalty. It was
rainy that evening too, and while waiting to go in the cafeteria, a limo
pulled up not 20 feet from me. I saw Kathy Bates open the passenger (front
seat) door and tell the driver, "Honey, just cause I make movies don't mean
I can't hold an umbrella......you go park the car and I'll walk over there
myself....see ya inside!" and she walked and stood in line just like
everyone else! She sat down at a long table with the electricians and
gaffers and chatted like any down-home gal! None of the other actors were
there, just Kathy.....it was such a kick to see a star acting like a
'regular person'! She seemed to enjoy herself too.
I also had the pleasure of meeting Patrick Swayze when he came down there to
shoot (the pathetically terrible) "Letters From A Killer". After the
filming, when he was leaving his trailer, my best friend (a pretty blonde
off-duty lady cop) and I (a petite brunette) asked if we could take his
picture. He started talking to us about our jobs, and then his stuntman
came over who'd badly slashed his arm earlier that day falling out of a car
in a scene. Patrick then asked him "where's the icechest, squirrel dick?"
and the stunt guy said it was in the back of a Bronco nearby Then he asked
Lori and I if we wanted a beer.......yeah, like we'd refuse, huh???? so he
popped down the tailgate, and we had Bud-Lights (he also chainsmoked
Marlboro Lights FYI) while he talked about how he broke half the bones in
his body the previous year falling from a horse. He's funny as hell, but he
sure has a raunchy mouth! We sat around for about 20 minutes till the set
managers came over and told him it was time to go back to the Windsor Court.
He hugged us both and said "it's great talkin to nice normal ladies for a
change! y'all be good!" Oh, and BTW....this was in 1997, so anything he's
said about being completely sober since the 'early' 90's ain't exactly the
truth..... I read an article in some magazine last year where he said that
to the interviewer and I laughed my ass off. I KNOW better!
But regardless, he's still a fun guy to hang out with.
I've also met Cameron Mathison from All My Children (o.k guy....but a
little TOO nice...didn't seem sincere) and had a telephone conversation with
Josh Duhamel (also from AMC) when I couldn't make the event of his that I
was supposed to help hostess when my daughter got the flu. He pretended to
be a pizza delivery guy at first, but I recognized his voice almost
immediately. He talked to me for 10 minutes and cracked me up. He's
another celeb who's much more at home with "normal people". He's basically
the midwestern gentleman, very sweet. His call made my day.....he's my
favorite AMC actor and I was heartbroken that I couldn't make it. But my
friend who set up the charity event simply asked if he'd mind making a phone
call to me when they were leaving the airport after picking him up, and he
dialed me as quick as he got the number. He told me he really wished I could
have been there, he'd love to meet me in person. I swear I will some day
too!
Honestly, I guess I've been lucky that all the celeb encounters I've had
have been wonderful ones.
I mowed Bill Laimbeer's lawn before he became a semi-famous basketball
player, but I met (and was paid by) his wife more than him. :)
I had a Guiness with Linus Torvalds at a Usenix in Boston. I bought
his beer, though I don't recall what he actually ordered.

Met this semester: Pat O'Brien, Suge Knight + Ray J (Pat and Suge spoke at my
school and Ray J was with Suge), Gwen Stefani, Jay Leno, Cameron Crowe, Gwyneth
Paltrow and Luke Wilson. And then my favorite celeb story of the semester: I
kinda met my keepee, Benjamin Bratt. I saw him on Leno (Dec. 8th, I think it
was) and was in the second row (got to shake Jay's hand in the intro, was on TV
like twice). Anyway, I was basically just awe-struck the entire time. I yelled
something out to him during the first commercial break, he looked at me, smiled
his beautiful smile and waved at me. Later, the guy in front of me (who thought
that I was just hilarious with my minor obsession) called his name and after he
got his attention, pointed to me again. I was just so shocked when we made eye
contact and actually ducked my head! So embarassing. But god, he's so beautiful
in person. Also along those lines of sorta meeting a celebrity: Gavin Rossdale.
I was front row at the private Bush concert at The Roxy and held his hands +
arms (trust me! I didn't start it, I only joined in).
Other celebs I've met: Calista Flockhart (twice), Peter McNichol, Danny DeVito,
Rhea Perlman, Tony Danza, Candice Bergen, John Ratzenberger, Molly Shannon,
Janeane Garofalo, Rachel Dratch, David Hyde Pierce, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Juwan
Howard.
Celebs I've seen up close this semester: Adam Sandler, Jon Lovitz, that fashion
guy from Access Hollywood (Steven Kojucaru?!), Brittany and Cynthia Daniel,
Neil Patrick Harris, Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopez, celebs + bands arriving at the My
VH1 Music Awards, cast of Undeclared, celebs attending the Ocean's 11 premiere
and celebs inside the El Capitan for the premiere of The Royal Tenenbaums.

And even though I haven't met him in person yet, I run the official website
for Scott Lowell, who plays Ted on the US "Queer As Folk." I've also
exchanged e-mails with Rob and Brennan, winners of "The Amazing Race."

(I'm ashamed to admit this, but)I met Junior Samples in 1972. I still
lived with my folks in NC at the time, and Samples was scheduled to
appear at the mall and participate in a hayride downtown. His band
didn't show and the organizers had to scramble to find a band. My dad
had a C&W band at the time and was service buds with one of the
promoters. His band got the gig and I got to meet Samples after the show
at the mall. Pleasant fellow; just a country boy who was friendly and
polite.
In 1975 a friend of mine was on the lighting crew at the Scope Arena in
Norfolk, VA. Alice Cooper was scheduled to appear on the first leg of
his Welcome To My Nightmare tour, and I and a few others had tickets. My
friend on the light crew at the Scope had a distant cousin who was a
member of Cooper's road crew, and he was able to get us backstage that
afternoon before the band began their sound check and such. We got to
meet Alice and talk for a moment. He was a nice guy and gave us all
autographs. I recall how bad he looked -- very pale and haggard in
appearance -- this was because alcohol abuse had begun to take its toll,
I assume.
In 1999, Atlanta Rhythm Section appeared at our local Summerfest here in
southern WV. It was a good show, although the crowd, even though
enthusiastic, numbered only a few hundred (country music is king here).
Afterwards the entire band was down at the trailer that sold ARS CDs and
t-shirts, waiting to sign autographs or chat with anyone who came up.
There were only a few dozen people waiting, and it made me feel bad that
this great group was playing a venue like this. I bought a tee, asked
them all to sign it, and in turn *I* was thanked for coming to the show.
Vocalist Ronnie Hammond told me that they had had a blast and had really
enjoyed the response of the crowd.
"We're just touring for fun and to keep the music out there", he said.
"A crowd of fans, no matter how small, is a great crowd."

I didn't mention in my previous post in this thread that Bob Denver

The celebrities I've met are mostly authors, or football players. My
favorite is Ann Rule, who I've met several times.
In one of our conversations I mentioned how much I liked Edna Buchanan's
books (I actually asked her to get me Edna's autograph). Ann said she's
good friends with Edna, and told me a little story about when Edna was
switching from non-fiction to fiction. Ann, Edna and Patricia Cornwell
were together. Edna told them about the great idea she had for her first
novel. Months later, Cornwell's latest was published - using Edna's
plot. She had to scrap everything she'd written and start over.
So Cornwell's not only a hack - but a thief, too.
Oh, and about two weeks after my conversation with Ann, a package from
her came in the mail. It was an autographed picture of Edna Buchanan.

And I Love her! I love that downhomey drawl she's got.
Good tidbit.
Ooh- I Love dirt like this! :)
I don't know if anyone remembers Nancy Glass, the tv journalist, but
she was so incredibly nice to me it was unbelievable. I was about 8
and really short (now I'm in my 20s and really short), and I was
trying to see Brooke Shields who was unveiling her line of jeans at
the Wannamaker's department store in Philadelphia. The adults in the
crowd kept stepping on me or pushing me aside, and I couldn't see
anything. Brooke was basically sitting on this chair and people had to
wait in line to see her and get her autograph. I couldn't even get
over to the line because the adults were more unruly than the kids.
Nancy Glass was covering the event for a show called Evening Magazine.
She spotted me being stomped on, so she came over to me and asked if I
wanted to see Brooke. I nodded yes, so Nancy picked me up so I could
get a better view and then later helped me into the line. Still, I've
never forgotten the fact that she actually lifted me up so I could
see! It's a rather funny memory.
I actually really love stories of celebs who behave like "normal"
people and haven't let their fame destroy them.
I also got to meet Paul Davidson and his wife from the Young and the
Restless, very charming couple and funny too.

insisted on buying them anyway. I acknowledged that I recognized him

I won't mention the ones I messed around with (all before they became
famous) or the friends; I'll never be spoken to again. So I'll mention a
few of my favorite encounters:
1. John Malkovich was a pompous gaseous windbag even back in the late
70's - early 80's. The first time I met him at a cast party he reeked, had
green teeth, and sat on a couch ripping farts loudly and chuckling. The sad
thing is, I liked that about him. I remember Gary Sinise and Laurie Metcalf
were getting high in the kitchen. (They were friendly and bathed.)
2. I had a horrible crush on William Hurt after Body Heat came out. He was
in HurlyBurly at The Goodman Theatre in Chicago. I was backstage. Someone
introduced me to David Mamet, who blew his cigar smoke in my face (creep)
and then to Joe Montegna and Bill Macy. Nicest guys in the world. Then, to
William Hurt. I go numb. Can't say a word. Stand there like an idiot. I
go outside to get some air. William Hurt follows me. Offers me a
cigarette. Tries to make small talk. I say nothing. Stand there like an
idiot again. He looks at me funny, shrugs, and goes away. After this he
hooked up with Marlee Matlin, and my friends enjoy telling me he fell for a
mysterious deaf lady (me) and settled for the next best thing (her).
3. At The Abbey in LA: After seeing "Barbra By Halstead" - an outrageous
drag show by a brilliant and scathing Babs impersonator- some friends and I
went next door for coffee. I ordered whatever, turned around, and Jason
Gould promptly walked into me and spilled his hot coffee all over himself.
He apparently was a big fan of the BBH show, which didn't please his mother.
The funny thing was, he made the same outrageous Barbra expressions as the
drag queen had, and we didn't know if he just looked like Mom or was still
way into the show. And he ran away... ran. Without saying a word.
4. Revenge!! Michael Madsen was shooting a film, and I was in a stupid
lower than low indie thing on an adjoining sound stage. I was in a
ridiculous costume. Passing Michael in the hall, he made an obnoxious
comment about my appearance. Without missing a beat, I said "At least I
wasn't in Nightscape" and kept walking. He FROZE. (Nightscape was the first
play this guy ever did, back when he was considering being an actor. He
stunk in it. My friend directed it. Maybe 5 people on earth saw it. That
comeback felt goooood.)
5. On a commercial shoot for a big hotel chain, the odious John Madden was
instructed to sit on the edge of a bed. He refused, saying it was
"suggestive" (there's an image...). The director tried to reason with him,
and said people sit on hotel beds all the time. Madden said, "They also
take a **** in the toilet, and I won't do that for you either." The lovely
thing about this experience is that the guy got paid a ton of $$ and
couldn't act, either. Belligerent baffoon.
6. My friend was touring with Davy Jones in "Oliver!", and Davy threw a big
New Year's Eve bash in Miami. He was alot of fun, very friendly, and agreed
to make a few crank phone calls to my brother which were extremely amusing
and earned him my highest respect. Davy was stoned out of his mind, I might
add.
7. Walking down Michigan Avenue in Chicago, I saw a teeny black haired lady
chugging towards me and I said "Hey! It's Dear Abby!" and she fairly spit
out "Ann Landers, you idiot" then cracked up laughing! I love her for that.
8. When I was a real little kid, my father used to book bands into
nightclubs. One of the bands was The Amboy Dukes ("Journey To The Center Of
Your Mind" had just been released) and Ted Nugent was in it. I was allowed
to watch them set up before the show. All I remember of Ted Nugent is that
he told my brothers and I to stand back before he started to play, but we
didn't. The lasting impression I have is that - had we been on roller
skates - the force from his first power-chord wouldn't blasted us against
the back wall.
9. Although not an actual sighting, this one is a favorite: A friend of
mine is the sound engineer for a talk show. When a celeb is willing, he
gets them to call my answering machine and leave me cheery messages -
knowing it will freak me out to come home to a greeting from Pat Boone,
Bobby Sherman, etc. 4 years ago I was visiting a friend for the holidays,
and I checked my messages. There is a SCREAMING Richard Simmons singing
"Locomotion" and telling me to shake my buns after eating, move my "tuchas",
on and on and on. He probably talked a good three minutes - all manic. I
was laughing so hard I fell and sprained my ankle.
10. This is SO RUDE, but what the hell. I was at summer camp and I vividly
recall this girl who was younger than me, crying. Someone went to get a
camp counselor. They took the girl to the nurse, and called her parents. I
don't remember if I was concerned or just a budding young gossip hound, but
I asked my counselor what had happened. She said, "Oh it's nothing. She
just started her period, that's all." That night, everyone in my cabin
listened to a CSN&Y album and talked about tampons and stuff like the
seasoned 14 year old pro's that we were. I think about this every time I
see that crying kid from camp on TV.... Jamie Gertz! (Well I told you it was
rude!)
>The celebrities I've met are mostly authors, or football players. My
>favorite is Ann Rule, who I've met several times.
I've met a few authors, mostly children's book authors.
As I've worked in hospitals - again, mostly children's hospitals - I've met
several celebrities who do fund raising. Roy Clarke was one who helped support
Children's Medical Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
If you count politicians as celebrities, then I've met more than my fair share.
I once worked on a burn center where James Garner's son was hospitalized in the
ICU right above us and the PR people for the hospital brought him through the
burn center to see the patients.
I looked up just in time to see Mr. Garner and the PR woman bearing down on my
desk. I had no prior warning but recognized him immediately. However, I did
not jump up and scream hysterically so I suppose the PR woman didn't think I
knew who he was. She brought him over and said pompously, "This is James
Garner."
"Yes," I said. "Hello, Mr. Garner."
"MR. JAMES GARNER THE ACTOR!" the PR woman stated, enunciating each syllable in
a sort of archangel announcing the birth impressive voice.
"Yes, so I see," I said agreeably.
James Garner was quite tall (of course, everyone is tall to me) and kind and I
thought it was amazingly nice of him to put up with that PR idiot when his son
was still in critical condition and not yet out of a coma. He looked very
worried.
I would have strangled that PR woman if I'd been in his place. He also seemed
quite anxious to return to ICU. However, he made the rounds of the burn
patients and spoke for a few moments with each one. A very nice man.

Hee! He was very nice, and still fabulously attractive. He was at Dragon*Con
this past August, which is a really big sci-fi/fantasy con in Atlanta.
There's where I met most of my celebs. There were more that I saw in
hallways or at the Walk of Fame (autograph tables), like Richard Hatch (not
the Survivor one; the Battlestar Galactica one), John Rhys-Davies (who is a
HUGE flirt and surprisingly sexy in person), David Prowse (Darth Vader),
Chris Demetral (stars in some syndicated fantasy series but I can't remember
which one), and Alice Cooper (who was receiving the Lifetime Achievement
Award from the International Horror Guild and was seated at the banquet
table right next to ours; he looked like death warmed over but was still
very cool). The highlight of the weekend was definitely Harlan Ellison, who
lives up to his reputation entirely and who had a grand old time heckling
the MC, which was Andy Hallett (The Host/Lorne on "Angel") during the entire
banquet. Good times.
Oh, and James Doohan, who was in a wheelchair most of the time and looked
about ready to drop dead at any moment, spent HOURS signing autographs in
the Walk of Fame. He wouldn't leave until everyone in his line, which was
extremely long, got a chance to talk to him. I have the feeling he's going
to be the next Trek actor to go and I will be very sad when he does, since
he showed himself to be a truly classy guy and genuinely fond of his fans
that weekend.

I met George Carlin in the late 80's, when I was in college. He was
REALLY nice, signed autographs and spoke to me and a bunch of my
friends for awhile. We waited for him after the show, and he really
took time out to talk to us. He really is just a regular guy.
I'm sort of embarassed to admit this, but I met Judas Priest when I
was in 12th grade. I had decided to interview them for the school
newspaper, but I chickened out when I finally met them after their
concert in my home town. I was such a huge admirer, I didn't know
what to say... but they were great anyway, they sensed my awe and fear
and did most of the talking!
> John Cougar Mellancamp (he was "Cougar" then) at a grocery store in

You know, I've lived in Bloomington for seven years and have yet to see
the guy, even though I know lots of people who have. (Maybe it's because
I shop at Kroger.)
The only celebrity I've ever met is Henry Lee Summer. When I was in
junior high, he did a concert for the Future Homemakers of America state
conference, and my chapter was one of three who raised the most money for
March of Dimes, so we got to meet him.

She was very friendly. I thought to ask her about William's birthday,
which was 2 days before the event. He had just turned 15. She seemed
struck that someone would remember to ask about one of her boys. That
made me pretty happy.
She seemed light from within. Very rare in anyone.

I encountered Ben Stein just before his TV show "Win Ben Stein's
Money" started airing in 1997. We were at a Circuit City store and I
didn't recognize him as much as his unforgettable voice. I knew him
as "The Bueller Man" from Ferris Bueller's Day Off. It's a little
embarrassing but this is how it went:
Me: "Excuse me but have you been in any movies?"
Ben Stein: "Yes, I've been in lots of them."
Me: "You're the Bueller Man!"
Ben Stein: "I'm the Bueller Man."
Me: "Can you do it?"
Ben Stein: "Would you like me to?"
Me: "Yes, please!"
Ben Stein: "Bueller..."
Me: "Thank you very much."
After this, he walked away and said to his wife "I'm the Bueller Man."
He didn't crack a smile the entire time. I think he enjoyed being
recognized but later I felt bad because I didn't ask him for his
autograph.

I once encountered HULK HOGAN. He was a major jerk. I was flying down to FL

Anyway, this was back around 90 or so. He was dressed in his crazy, bright

One other, that will make no sense to most people, but will
if you've ever listened to Beach Music - no, not that surfing
stuff, but authentic Carolina beach music, the stuff you shag
(the dance!) to. Some of the most sublime, and somewhat
strange, pieces of beach music were sung by a man named
Billy Stewart, "the Fat Boy", who sang a version of "Summertime"
that was just unforgettable and really hard to describe (there
might be some excerpts of that and "Secret Love" somewhere
on the net - maybe CDNow?) Anyway, as a kid, I met Billy
Stewart when he and his band were eating at a KFC at
Windy Hill Beach in SC; less than a year later, he was killed
in an auto accident. Great singer, deserves to be better known.

I'm very impressed. :) She is one of only a few people I would have
like to have met. How fortunate to have spoken to her so shortly
before her death.
I have met many celebrities (wrestlers, soap stars, supermodels)and the former
POTUS (Bill Clinton that's another story) but my encounter with Hulk Hogan's
wife stands out. In 1991my daughter (7) performed in a big black tie NYC
celebrity charity event (she has done several). She had rehearsals all day
before the evening affair, so I was left with free time to get dressed up and
went to get my hair done with the 15 year old sisster of another performer.
That girl struck up a conversation in the salon with a very pretty blonde
woman, who asked where we were going. When the girl told her, she said she was
attending the same affair. Later, at the party, this girl passes the woman,
who is taliking to Hank Aaron, Cindy Crawford ) and the woman says "Oh, therer
you are! I was looking for you! Come to my table to meet my husband." The
husband was Hulk, and Macho Man, Vince McMahon, Hacksaw were all there. They
made her sit down, took pictures etc. Mrs, Hulk went out of her way for that
girl. Beaucoup class.

Although I never saw her, she used to shop in a store I worked in years
ago. She told someone there about an incident that happened to her: She
was in church in Garden City on a Saturday, going to confession, and as
two old women walked past her, one whispered, "Imagine HER - here in
CHURCH!" They were confusing her with her soap opera character.
I, too, have heard she is a lovely woman.

First of all Big J, as an aside, let me just say that I *love* your posts.
Anyway...he was a total frat boy in college (not meant as a put down per se,
especially since I was in a sorority so I am not one to talk, but I digress --
he was in A E Pi). The funny thing is, he wasn't even close to being the best
looking guy in that fraternity. However, he was a cutie, albeit approaching
serious shrimpdom. I never got any gay vibes off of him, but to be honest, I
never got *any* vibes off of him at all. He didn't date anyone seriously, nor
was he known to be a hook-up king. The only time anything remotely sexual
with him happened in my presence was one night at the Exchange (the most
annoying bar on the face of the earth) when this evil bitch from my sorority
was sloppy drunk and kept shouting "I WANT SCOTT WOLF!" I kept looking at him
to make eye contact and we were both cracking up. Scandalous, I know. :)
He was actually a nice guy, president of his fraternity, marketing major who
one would never have expected to make it big (although I guess he's kinda a
has-been). I wish I had better "scoop," but there's not much to scoop about.
He's really, really short:).

1) Worked with Ed Harris on post production for 'Pollack.' Very intense,
professional, impassioned about the work and very respectful to we minions
employed for the day.
2) Talked briefly with Jon Anderson, lead singer for YES, as he mixed one of
his solo projects. He was as nice as they come.
3) Morgan Fairchild was genial, looked great and is the epitome of petite.
4) James Caan was outgoing, friendly and extended his hand with a 'hello,
I'm Jimmy,' to which I replied, " Yes, I know."
5) Henry Winkler is known to be one of the nicest men working in show
business and he didn't disappoint. While I was doing some post-production
work on a film in which he appeared, he approached me with a smile,
introduced himself and complimented my work. . kind of above-and-beyond-
the-call-of-duty behavior under the circumstances. I was greatly impressed
with how generous and friendly he was.
6) Adam Sandler was polite-but-reserved and quiet. Very much the antithesis
of expectation.
7) Interviewed the members of Queen early in their career. Polite and
professional. No real anecdote, here. They seemed serious about their work.
A few others of note, but they'd also fall into the professional and polite
category. I know it's more fun to say such-and-such was a real asshole, but
I haven't found that to be the case. No ego trips among the bunch.
Agreed. Some might know him better for his hits " I Do Love You" and
"Sitting In The Park." There's more info on him at

He was probably hitting on you :)
