True, if your definition of "substance" is "talking points" or
"dodging the question".
Hey, she's a maverick hockey mom, that's good enough for me by golly.
All the talking heads on both sides of the issue said she did much better
than expected.
They also all said Joe Biden did fine.
She gets a slight edge, but only because of all the retards bashing her for
the last two weeks.
Fuck, Dutchie, can't you EVER stop being a partisan moron?

We must change the way we live
Or the climate will do it for us.
As was publicized days in advance of last night's debate, the McCain
planners' ploy for Daffi Dumb Shit (Failin' Palin) was for her to
ignore at all costs the topics of the questions posed by Gwen Ifill.
As Tom Shales noted, "Palin's insistence on avoiding substantial
comment on issues and simply ignoring questions she couldn't answer
convincingly" would be her strategy. As it was.
And as was feared, Ifill didn't hold Daffi to actual answer-to-
question protocol.
So, we are still left with a substance-less, vacant-minded, issues-
illiterate nitwit who can't name any newspapers she claims to read.
Maybe the gun-huggers and religion-graspers, and even some of the
leftover Hillary Hags still see her as their president, should
Mc"Cane" croak (if he hasn't already, and how would we know?).
But last night did little to convince intelligent viewers that she's
not a daffy dumb shit after all!
-----------------------------
"Hockey Mom on Thin Ice"
By E. J. Dionne Jr.
Friday, October 3, 2008; A23
Early in last night's vice-presidential debate, Sarah Palin said that
she might not answer the questions as moderator Gwen Ifill posed them.
This was the Alaska governor's way of saying she was going to stick to
the talking points she had stuffed into her head, no matter what the
subject.
When Palin described John McCain's health-care plan, she talked about
his offer of a $5,000 tax credit so families could buy insurance. She
failed to mention that McCain would pay for the credit by taxing
existing insurance benefits. Democratic vice-presidential nominee Joe
Biden -- politely -- pounced on her omission, warning that McCain's
plan could lead millions to lose their insurance coverage. Palin
didn't come back to defend her running mate.
Nor did she come back when Biden challenged her false claims about how
many times Barack Obama had voted for tax increases. Palin just plowed
forward, piling one attack on top of another, with leavening
references to "Joe Six-Pack" and "hockey moms."
Oh, yes, she did correct Biden on one thing. When he said the
Republican energy slogan is "drill, drill, drill," she quickly
reminded him that "the chant is drill, baby, drill." Thanks for
clearing that up.
Last night's debate took place at the moment when a majority of
American voters had decided that Palin was unprepared to be president
if she were called upon to assume the office. Surveys by The Post and
ABC News and by the Pew Research Center both found that doubts about
Palin have risen sharply since the beginning of September.
The key to understanding how McCain chose Palin as his running mate
was provided by the New York Times last weekend when it described an
episode in which he "tossed $100 chips around a hot craps table."
Americans are increasingly uneasy about the gamble they might take by
putting Palin a heartbeat away from the presidency.
Expectations for Palin were so low that the mere fact that she managed
to keep talking and to keep assailing Obama will be rated as a great
victory by McCain's lieutenants. But it was Biden who knew what he was
talking about, who could engage in argument and who showed he actually
understood the issues. In recent interviews with CBS anchor Katie
Couric, Palin came off as profoundly uninformed, as someone who had
given little thought to the issues that will matter. Nothing Palin did
last night changed that. Those rooting for her were relieved. Those
who doubted her readiness going in were not persuaded by her endless
repetition of the word "maverick."
Palin has also brought out the very worst in McCain, forcing him to --
and I do not use this word lightly -- lie about her. In an interview
broadcast Wednesday, National Public Radio's Steve Inskeep asked
McCain if there would be "an occasion where you could imagine turning
to Governor Palin for advice in a foreign policy crisis?"
McCain replied: "I've turned to her advice many times in the past. I
can't imagine turning to Senator Obama or Senator Biden, because
they've been wrong."
" Many times in the past?" McCain met Palin only twice before he
selected her. What McCain said could not be true. And would anyone who
listened to her last night really consult Palin on foreign policy?
This week, McCain's backers signaled their fears that Palin would fail
by trying to discredit the debate in advance. Although it has been
known at least since July that Gwen Ifill was writing a book on
"Politics and Race in the Age of Obama," the usual right-wing attack
squad waited until two days before the debate to mount a campaign to
the effect that Ifill's book project turned her into a biased
moderator. In her measured questioning, Ifill showed that the attack
was nonsense.
The core issue, of course, is the contrast between how Obama and
McCain chose their running mates. Say what you will about Joe Biden --
and last night, he was far from being either the gaffe machine or the
windbag so many predicted would appear on stage -- no one loses sleep
at the idea of his being in the Oval Office. Obama picked a vice
president more likely to help him govern the country than win the
chance to do so.
As for McCain, he found himself in a political hole and threw the dice
with Palin. At the time of her selection, voters were often compared
with "American Idol" watchers who put personality and stage presence
above everything else. But it turns out that Americans take the
presidency very seriously. And surviving 90 minutes on a stage with
Biden did not transform Palin into a plausible president.

perfectly illustrates why you're such a dunce. You gleefully jump onto
any bandwagon that tells you what you want to believe, no matter how

For the record, I'm in the neither category - I thought they were both
very good. I liked both of them a lot better than either POTUS
candidate.
No, when he meant substance he meant that Palin was on
substances.....such as crack and meth.
Gosh darn yer right.
They expected her to be drooling. So yeah, anything better than that
was a surprise.
I understand that some people have noticed that Palin didn't create an
ulterior joke of herself last night, therefore, they are raving on how
great she was...hello? Is the USA sleeping? Are we going ahead with
times or backwards?
Does anybody else out there notice how the McCain team avoids
questions in regards to the American people's well being...their only
"strength" is war...but what the hell are we fighting for? Does
anybody really know? Where is Osama? And in regards to the white flag
which Palin mentioned....what would we be losing? For now we are
loosing thousands of wonderful man and woman, God Bless Them wherever
they are,
billions of dollars and forgotten why this hunt started in the
first place...
How about researching Palin...as a woman myself, I believe that she is
not representing me...some of the true facts about her are just
sickening to me, and to believe that some of you reading this are
considering her for the White House is sick. Please wake up and really
listen to what they say...no I mean really listen! It doesn't matter
what they look like, what gender they are..just listen and feel what
they are saying..we are in 2008, it is time for change and it is time
for the new generations and the old generations with open minds to
step up and wake up America and the World...let's be proud of being
Americans again...vote Obama!
My absolute favorite moment in the debate was when Gwen Ifill asked what
they believed their Achilles Heel was. Now I hate that sort of question,
because much like the dreaded "what is your greatest weakness?" in a job
interview, the smart, prepared person sees it coming and can twist it into
something positive, like "My attention to detail seems to keep me at work
for long hours," or "I am punctual to a fault," or something to that
effect---- no one is ever going to reveal in a job interview (which this
debate was, btw) that they spend way too much time surfing the web at work,
or they love crack, or they tend to sneak their hand in the till when no
one's looking.
Joe Biden made a joke immediately about it.
"You're very kind suggesting my only Achilles Heel is my lack of discipline.
Others talk about my excessive passion. I'm not going to change. I have 35
years in public office. People can judge who I am. I haven't changed in that
time." Twisted into a positive. Nicely done.
However, Gov. Palin went first, and didn't get the benefit of hearing
Biden's answer. Even Gwen gave her a starting point, that the conventional
wisdom was that she lacked experience. Clearly a good starting point. Gov.
Palin could have played up the "Washington outsider" bit again, "Gosh darn
it, you people just say big ol' nine-letter words that we Joe Six-Packs
don't understand," tried to explain how the proximity to Russia gives her
foreign policy experience, trot in her mayoral and gubernatorial stints to
show that she had executive experience. Here's what she said.
"My experience as an executive will be put to good use as a mayor and
business owner and oil and gas regulator and then as governor of a huge
state, a huge energy producing state that is accounting for much progress
towards getting our nation energy independence and that's extremely
important."
She went on to talk about the world view she shares with McCain, that they
represent the "perfect ideal:---- "democracy and tolerance and freedom and
equal rights." (Gee, three out of four of those aren't things that exactly
jump out at me when I think of the GOP. Certainly not equal rights and
tolerance. Freedom? Depends on whom you're talking to.)
She never once mentioned any Achilles heel, or anything remotely like
one---- because she did NOT understand the question. It wasn't the only
question she dodged--- there were others where she went wildly off topic
(and only a few times did either Biden or Ifill challenge her to answer the
original question), but she didn't just dodge this one, because she would
have had such a cutesy little answer for it----had she just *understood* it.
She absolutely appeared not to understand what an Achilles heel was. It was
giant softball, a gimme, and she missed it. (And this is why I doubt she
was wired--- someone on the other end of the microphone would have told her
"make a joke about your weaknesses, your weaknesses!")
That said, she honestly did better than I expected, even though she never
went off book, except when she was winking and giving shout outs. (I'm sure
her people have realized that people love Sarah to be Sarah, and really
don't care what she says.) . That's why she kept dodging questions---- she
had her prepared little answers, and had to squeeze them in, off-topic or
no.
That's because she avoided the questions and just made general campaign
slogan statements often. I came away from the debate knowing little
more about her than going in.
> He was channeling Matusow.
"I" was not channeling anyone because that is not I.

Of course she did, everyone expected her to completely humiliate herself.
She exceeded that expectation. I commented here after the debate that I
thought she looked poised and in control, if a little out of her depth, and
that would carry her in good stead with her supporters. But that doesn't
mean she killed, she didn't, she made several serious errors.

LOL. FOX and Drudge are NOT biased and CNN, MSNBC, CBS, NBC and ABC are????
Once again, you spout off a lot of words but say nothing.
> They expected her to stumble hard.
> She didn't at all.
Only if you count not being able to answer any of the questions and
going to prepared talking points that had nothing to do with the
question "not stumbling".
> CNN does not represent the American public.
Most of these debate polls are grossly biased, others biased to lesser
degrees, and last night most of them missed the point. The Fox News text
message poll had Palin winning by an 8-1 margin, Luntz's focus group had
Palin winning big including among swing voters, someone posted here that
Drudge's poll also had Palin by a wide margin, and the anecdotal evidence
of how well Palin's performance has been received is everywhere. The
supposedly legitimate CNN poll (as opposed to the web one), which is
suspect in its identification of sample participants, had Biden winning but
the most overwhelmingly significant number was that Palin's positives in
terms of her grasp of the issues and so on went up about 20 points from
40-something to 60-something.
Note that when I started the thread I never said a word about Biden, not
in the thread title and not in the two-line post. I could write 200+ lines
completely dissecting Joe Biden's record, how often he's been wrong,
his gaffes the last several weeks, the travesty of his role in the "Chains
You Can Believe In" bankruptcy legislation, his 12 or more outright and
quasi-misrepresentations last night, and how and why Sarah Palin would
make a much better President than he would. But the fact is that last
night I thought he did fine. It's one of the great things about the debate,
for Palin especially, that she didn't "win" because Biden "lost". Palin
won because she basically nuked, as in completely incinerated, the
renewed left wing loon and mainstream media onslaught of the last
week or two, by speaking *directly* to the voters again.
Among all the voters who matter, this performance closes the deal.
Even on the "Jeopardy" or "Trivial Pursuit" or "Gotcha" type quest
that Couric and the CBS editors went on, and in one instance at
least Gibson before that, she's beyond that now. Everyone knows
she's not a Washington insider or Supreme Court rulings expert or
foreign policy wonk, so the whole thing with the other interviews
was never a legitimate issue anyway. Of course she needed some
time to get more up to speed on some issues. What's remarkable
about last night is how far she's come in only a month. She was up
against a career senator for 35+ years, the Ultimate Washington
Insider, and she more than held her own.

Yeah Palin showed some substance when she was able to find her notes
while Biden answered the current question.
The question is about credit cards and bancruptcy.
Palin: Let's go back 2 questions and talk ablout energy (I finally
found my notes).
The question is about what programs you would cut because of the
slowdown?
Palin: Let's go back 5 questions and talk about policing Wall
Street.

All I'll say is that Fox News own web site poll had Biden winning 61% - 39%.

Sure she did. She got the general's name in Afghanistan wrong, she got
the content of his comments that day wrong (he did indeed say a surge
would not work in Afghanistan), she lied about the pipeline which is on
the drawing board and many years and studies from being built, she lied
about Alaska's capability of providing the US with enough oil to make it
self sufficient (3.7 billion barrels...enough oil to feed the world for
a month...so it would only last the US perhaps four or five months).
Those are just her errors off the top of my head. There are many
more...like her lies about Obama's voting record.

Joe Biden's Alternate Universe
Michael J. Totten - 10.03.2008 - 8:10 AM
In Thursday night's vice presidential debate between Senator Joe Biden
and Governor Sarah Palin, Biden said the strangest and most
ill-informed thing I have ever heard about Lebanon in my life.
"When we kicked - along with France, we kicked Hezbollah out of
Lebanon, I said and Barack said, "Move NATO forces in there. Fill the
vacuum, because if you don't know - if you don't, Hezbollah will
control it."
Now what's happened? Hezbollah is a legitimate part of the government
in the country immediately to the north of Israel."
What on Earth is he talking about? The United States and France may
have kicked Hezbollah out of Lebanon in an alternate universe, but
nothing even remotely like that ever happened in this one.
Nobody - nobody - has ever kicked Hezbollah out of Lebanon. Not the
United States. Not France. Not Israel. And not the Lebanese. Nobody.
Joe Biden has literally no idea what he's talking about.
It's too bad debate moderator Gwen Ifill didn't catch him and ask a
follow up question: When did the United States and France kick
Hezbollah out of Lebanon?
The answer? Never. And did Biden and Senator Barack Obama really say
NATO troops should be sent into Lebanon? When did they say that? Why
would they say that? They certainly didn't say it because NATO needed
to prevent Hezbollah from returning-since Hezbollah never went
anywhere.
You didn't watch he debate then. When palin was ever confronted with a
question she was uncomfortable with she wouldn't answer.
Well you certainly are one. Good luck with being like that in life.
Whether he was aware or not - I don't know. But why didn't he clear it up
when the family asked him too instead of continuing the lie?
Why does Joe Biden lie about a 'drunk driver' killing his 1st wife?
Thomas Lifson
It is terrible to lose family members to a traffic accident. But why on
earth would a United States Senator fabricate an embellishment and claim
that it was a drunk driver's fault, when the record clearly indicates it was
not?
Delaware Online reports:
Since his vice presidential nomination, Joe Biden's 2007 statement that a
"guy who allegedly ... drank his lunch" and drove the truck that struck and
killed his first wife and daughter has gained national media traction.
Alcohol didn't play a role in the 1972 crash, investigators found. But as
recently as last week, the syndicated TV show Inside Edition aired a clip
from 2001 of Biden describing the accident to an audience at the University
of Delaware and saying the truck driver "stopped to drink instead of drive."
The senator's statements don't jibe with news and law enforcement reports
from the time, which cleared driver Curtis C. Dunn, who died in 1999, of
wrongdoing.
"To see it coming from [Biden's] mouth, I just burst into tears," Dunn's
daughter, Glasgow resident Pamela Hamill, 44, said Wednesday. "My dad was
always there for us. Now we feel like we should be there for him because
he's not here to defend himself."
Biden has embellished his supposed "working class" origins in Scranton, PA,
when in fact his father was successful sales professional for substantial
companies, and he attended a very expensive private school.
Is this an attempt to exploit the death of his first wife for political
gain? The thought is sickening. Even if Biden was inititially misinformed,
he and his campaign have allowed a lie to propagate throughout the media.
The news report above mentions:
"...since Barack Obama tapped Biden to be his running mate on Aug. 23, The
New York Times, National Public Radio and The Economist have run stories
that characterized Dunn as a drunken driver."
We know the family was unaware of it, they said so in the recent press
conference.
> But why didn't he clear it up when the family asked him
Because there's nothing to clear up.The record shows that the man was never
charged with impaired driving. Joe had reason to believe the guy had been to
a bar, but he's dead now, so is Joe's wife.

They count more? Now, there's an interesting assertion! In what
way do they count more?
And was smug about it: "I may not answer the questions the way you or
the moderator want..."
Unbelievable.
Then why did he say that the guy had been drinking his lunch?
I just told you.
So you believe that for 25 years he never felt the need to see why his wife
and daughter had died? wow
When my Mom died at the age of 82 I was curious enough to find out what
caused her death.
and here is his apology - (or not)
"I apologize for taking so long to acknowledge your thoughtful and heartfelt
note," Biden wrote. "All that I can say is I am sorry for all of us and
please know that neither I nor my sons feel any animosity whatsoever."
It's nice they felt no animosity when the truck driver did nothing wrong.
Fey should have a field day with that one...

You've been nothing but emotional on this and every election topic.
Obama is a political idiot. He should be cruising to victory, 20 points
ahead in the polls, and he isn't.
He was too stupid to pick the right running mate. He left himself open to
McCain doing exactly what he did, and now he's fucked.
He can't go after Palin for inexperience, because it highlights his own
inexperience. He can't afford to attack her too hard on issues, because it
hurts him with women voters to be perceived that way.
His first real decision as candidate for President was to select a running
mate, and he fucked it up royally, leaving himself vulnerable.
This is the guy you're in love with for president?
If I could build a candidate, I'd take his social positions and McCain's
economic positions.... and I'd end up with someone close to Guilliani, my
own choice this cycle.
Of the two guys that are actual, viable candidates, I'm prepared to bite the
economic bullet and deal with the novice for four years, and hope, unless
the economy completely tanks in the next month.
That said, ignoring the truth about the performances of candidates is
stupidity on your part, and on the part of most partisan assholes out there.

Biden did fine. Expectations were higher for him.

You call it smug. I call it honest, assertive, and bold. Putting ones

Doggoneit there you go again lookin' back through those BDS glasses
of yours. You need a new PDS prescription.
She'd make a great President and I hope she gets the chance to prove
that in 4 or 8 years.
> FOX and Drudge are NOT biased...
All polls are grossly biased to the extent they're self-selected. So
for example the web polls are especially biased and meaningless.
Other polls, especially the quickie ones right after the debate, can
have specific bias problems and at least the appearance of bias if
the organization(s) running or exclusively paying for it is biased.
A lot of it was nothing more than post-debate spin for Obama
or Biden. One poll had Biden winning by a couple of points and
the headline becomes "Biden Wins!" or the like. Buried in the
data or unreported is that Palin's performance was hugely positive
for her and she was overwhelmingly the main focus of the debate.
If it had been Joe Biden versus Tom Ridge, the thing would have
been lucky to draw a third the numbers it did. Biden got it wrong
and misrepresented throughout, getting a half dozen things wrong
in the space of a minute or two at one point. But 95%+ of the
70 million watching don't catch it and don't care. It sounds good
as he rattles it off like a career Senator for 36 years, so at the end
they might tick off Biden as the winner but it's not the story. The
story is that attitudes towards Palin became much more positive,
as they did after she spoke directly to voters in Denver. When
Tina Fey or Katie Couric get their 5 or 7 million viewers and try
to chip away at that, or the left wing loons online here babble to
dozens, it's even less successful now because 70 million have seen
the debate.
> Yeah she superbly demonstrated how she doesn't think the constitution
> constrains the power of the vice presidency.
She said no such thing. The issue is arcane because it's a simple fact that
the Vice President has very little "power" per se. Legislatively, he/she
can preside over the Senate anytime and vote to break ties. Being the
second in line of succession to the Presidency is really the only executive
branch "power" they have, which is to say it's a non-power or a potential
to assume power.
They traditionally (not constitutionally) advise and support the President,
get briefed on national security matters, sometimes travel abroad to meet
foreign leaders or attend funerals, and also take on whatever duties the
President assigns. So for example Palin mentioned helping lead in three
areas -- (i) energy policy and self sufficiency, (ii) government reform and
fighting corruption, and (iii) special needs children.
HJARF!
Tell that to Cheney.
Jim
It's not a debate if participants refuse to answer questions, it's a press
conference.
She also commented that she believed that the VP should have more powers
under the constitution. She's been in town a week and she's trying to change
the constitution already. She also thinks that journalists should only ask
questions that the candidate chooses for them in advance. She is one crazy
bitch.
> All I'll say is that Fox News own web site poll...

"Beware Sarah Palin! How does a clueless hockey mom and
Tina Fey lookalike from Alaska ever become the most popular
governor in the country? How does she then suddenly show up
nationally and give a great speech a month ago? And how does
she then dare to come back with *this* superb performance in
the debate, after we all tried to destroy her? Read on for the
terrifying truth...
In early August 2006 during a combination meteor shower and
Aurora Borealis display, NORAD recorded an earthbound object
with an unusual trajectory that impacted 12 miles North of Wasilla,
Alaska. The following day, two tourists from moveon.org reported
seeing Todd Palin and a group of fellow snow machine racers
staring at them funny. Long story short, by the end of August the
Alaskans had all become pod people.
Get a clue people! C'mon, you know it's true! Sarah Palin is able
to survive our attacks because she's possessed be a sinister alien
force that landed outside Wasilla, Alaska in early August 2006.
That's how she became Governor. She's like that Thing they thawed
out of the ice in the 50s movie and then the remake. We should have
stopped her up there, but now she's down here in the lower 48
threatening to destroy us!
First we had BDS (Bush Derangement Syndrome), then FDS
(Fox Derangement Syndrome), and now this even worse PDS
(Palin Derangement Syndrome). But just because we have PDS
doesn't mean she's not like that big tall alien from the Twilight
Zone ep To Serve Man. As I write this, she's probably writing
the final chapters of To Serve Liberals! If she's not stopped now,
she'll eat us whole, like those evil aliens in V!, or that Lois Lane
clone who ate the frog in season 3 of Lois & Clark!
Don't be fooled by her looks, or the glasses! Look at the trend
line, my friends, and hark back to that very early Star Trek ep
with the 2001 actor Gary Lockwood. Remember how he was
just an ordinary lieutenant at the helm there to start that episode?
Then he got zapped with that energy burst that hit his console.
He started absorbing knowledge at an exponentially fast rate
and displaying powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal
lieutenants. Mark my words, the same thing's happening here!
Karl Rove and his evil disciples are filling Palin with knowledge,
while the Patriot Act is feeding her more power, and McCain is
sharing his Maverick abilities with her. By January 20, she will
be unstoppable. Look, it's all mathematically proven here:
http://www.stop-palin-from-eating-us-liberals.pdf
The first thing she'll do is consume MSNBC, NBC, CBS
The New York Times, and all of us here at dailykos. If you
don't want to live under Palin Rule, act now before it's too
late! And whatever you do, never watch FOX! It carries a
subliminal pod people propagation wave and Doggoneit you'll
be one of Them, chanting "Drill, Baby, Drill".

It may well go away if it gets real bad, too, once people start worrying
