LONDON - A portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by one of Britain's leading artists
stirred outrage and indignation yesterday, with aghast critics unsure if it
made her look more like actor Jack Nicholson hamming it up or one of the royal
dogs suffering a stroke.
Pictures of the portrait by Lucian Freud were splashed across the front of
British newspapers, with most of her majesty's subjects taking a jaundiced view
of the latest royal portrait.

In London's Daily Telegraph, columnist Richard Morrison said, "The chin has
what can only be described as a six-o'clock shadow."

Robert Simon, editor of the British Art Journal, said, "It makes her look like
one of the royal corgis who has suffered a stroke."

The Evening Standard said Freud has given the queen "the sort of pursed lips
last seen on Jack Nicholson when he played Batman's arch-enemy, The Joker."

Freud, the 79-year-old grandson of psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, formally
presented the work to the queen Thursday. Her reaction is unknown.

The small oil painting, which will go on public display next year, is a gift
from Freud to the country's Royal Collection.
