Beckham-Inspired Art Collection Goes Up for Sale
Thu Nov 4, 2004 08:08 AM ET

LONDON (Reuters) - He may not measure up to Michelangelo's David, but
England's own favorite David -- soccer captain David Beckham -- has a
similar knack of inspiring artists.

Now a whole collection of works featuring the 29-year-old style icon is
going under the hammer to raise money for charity.

It includes a letter to him from one of Britain's best known artists, Tracey
Emin -- along with a photo of Emin naked apart from a pair of knickers.

"This may sound strange but sometimes I believe people forget who you are,
and what you have achieved," read Emin's letter. "It actually makes me quite
angry."

Emin was once nominated for the prestigious Turner Prize for a work
consisting of an unmade bed.

Other items in the sale include contributions by Toby Mott, Alison Jackson
and a piece called "Balls of Gold and Dick of Diamond," by singer Holly
Johnson.

Jackson contributed a photo of a Beckham lookalike bearing his "El-Becks"
tattooed bottom, and another work is a Lego model of Beckham at an art
gallery.

"David Beckham is the most globally recognized icon of the decade. He
appeals to boys and girls, young and old, gay and straight," said deaf
artist Hugo Rittson-Thomas, who first suggested the auction.

The sale is not the first time Beckham has been associated with high art.

A video of him sleeping was displayed at the National Portrait Gallery, and
last year he bought a painting by Damien Hirst.

The sale at Christie's is organized by the National Deaf Children's Society,
which hopes to raise 150,000 pounds ($275,000).
