Why Is It That...
The latest, hippest thing in Hollywood is getting a cameo on Pamela
Anderson Lee's hit series "V-IP." Jay Leno and Jerry Springer have
already had their turn. This fall, viewers will see George Clooney, Hugh
Hefner and Dan Akroyd on the syndicated action/comedy show. Even Lee's
on-again/off-again husband, Tommy Lee, will appear in an episode.

It's the Plague...
British public health officials report a potentially lethal
bacterium...currently resistant to every known antibiotic...has shown up
for the first time in a British hospital.
The Guardian newspaper says there were two cases at Glasgow Royal
Infirmary earlier this summer...prompting alarm in the medical community
about a so-called superbug resistant to every antibiotic. The discovery
has sparked fears that medicine faces a return to the dark, pre-
penicillin days when all surgery risked infection and death.

Get A Life James...
Princess Diana's ex-lover is still cashing in on the affair.
James Hewitt has made a deal with the London newspaper The Mail to
serialize his new memoir...which is based on love letters from Diana.
Most were written between 1990 and 1991...when the former army officer
was serving in the Gulf War.
Last February, Hewitt successfully sued to retrieve those letters
from another girlfriend who'd stolen them.
Other British newspapers were nearly unanimous in condemning Hewitt's
serialization agreement...said to be worth the equivalent of 800-
thousand dollars. Headlines included "Cruel Hewitt"..."Cad in a
Cravat"...and "Lowest of the Low."
Diana was killed in a Paris auto accident in August 1997.

It Takes A Thief
A Seattle museum is suing a New York City gallery for the value of a
painting by Henri Matisse. The Knoedler Gallery bought the painting from
a French gallery in 1954 and later sold it to a Seattle couple who hung
it in their living room. The couple then willed the painting to the
Seattle Art Museum. Two years ago, the heirs of Jewish art collector
Paul Rosenberg sued the gallery for the painting "Odalisque" valued at
$2 million. The heirs claimed the painting had been stolen from their
relative by the Nazis during World War II. The heirs got the painting
back and it's now been sold to Las Vegas casino owner, Steve Wynn, who
is displaying the painting his casino Bellagio.

Strange Dreams...
A Canadian teen dreams of going over Niagara Falls in a barrel and
he's had a taste of the mighty Niagara River by swimming from the
Canadian to the American side of the rapids. Eighteen-year-old Tyler
Canning of Victoria Harbor, Ontario says he's contemplating going over
the Horseshoe Falls over the weekend, but decided it was too dangerous -
even with the three life-jackets he was wearing. So he decided to ride
the rapids instead. Canning describes the experience as going through
walls of water, 20-feet high. His stunt got him arrested by the Canadian
border patrol and a court date in October. Despite the court date
Canning says he's still obsessed by going over the falls in a barrel.
