The new wave of female firebrands striking fear into liberal America

Right-wing radicals are already pinning presidential ambitions on a
mother-of-five from Minnesota who calls herself a 'fool for Christ' and
condemns Obama as a socialist at the head of a gangster regime
She is a striking brunette with a decidedly outspoken attitude. She
lambasts President Barack Obama as a socialist and has become the
darling of America's right-wing activists who flock to her appearances.
She is hated by liberals and loved by conservatives.
Sarah Palin? Not quite. Meet Michele Bachmann, a Republican
congresswoman from Minnesota who is being hailed as a new and
increasingly powerful voice in American politics.
Bachmann, at 53, is a darling of the so-called Tea Party movement, which
has campaigned vociferously against healthcare reform, the economic
stimulus package and legislation to combat climate change. Her followers
have been behind mass rallies in Washington and smaller ones all over
the country. She has emerged as one of the most visible politicians in
America, frequently appearing on the conservative Fox News channel,
whose hosts often champion her causes.
She is part of an increasingly visible "female brand" of conservatism
that is rising in America in the wake of the election of Obama. They
include notable syndicated commentators such as Michelle Malkin and Ann
Coulter, whose dislike for liberals has grown ever more shrill in recent
months. And, of course, Palin herself. She is still a giant of the
political and media landscape and next week embarks on a book tour to
sell her autobiography. It has already sparked a media frenzy, with a
heavily hyped appearance on Oprah Winfrey's show, and become a huge
bestseller on pre-orders alone.
All these women express a mood of conservative discontent that is
becoming increasingly vocal and, some experts warn, extreme. The
Republicans have been kicked out of power in the White House and
Congress. The party is becoming more white and southern at the same time
as national demographic changes give power to other regions and
minorities. Many Americans are also suffering in the recession. That is
a grim picture but one that also makes many voters vulnerable to a
talented rabble-rouser. "They are tapping into grassroots frustration...
they are charging up an already highly charged group of people," said
Shaun Bowler, a political scientist at the University of California at
Riverside.
The politics espoused by Bachmann, Palin and others on the far right of
the conservative movement warn darkly of Obama's intentions. They paint
a picture of an America that is under threat from its own president.
Bachmann has spoken of the possibility of the White House setting up
"re-education camps" for America's youth. Palin once accused Obama of
"palling around" with terrorists. To the many critics of this new breed
of conservatism, people such as Bachmann and Palin are putting an
attractive female face to a very ugly brand of politics.
The crowd gathered in Washington DC on 5 November had answered
Bachmann's call. Using Fox News and her own press announcements,
Bachmann had demanded that conservative activists descend on the
nation's capital to invade the corridors of Congress and demand that
politicians stop healthcare reform. Thousands of people did just that,
showing up for a mass rally. They chanted: "We want Michele!"
Many liberals criticised the protest as a failure. But from Bachmann's
point of view that was hard to see. The move catapulted her to the front
of the Republican party as politician after politician showed up to
address the crowd. She was a fixture on cable news all day. In the short
space of a couple of years Bachmann had gone from obscure congresswoman
to national media figure.
But out in the crowd the ugly face of some modern conservatives was not
hard to find. There were 12 arrests. One protester wore a mask of House
Speaker Nancy Pelosi with handfuls of bloody foetuses. Another protester
held up a picture of piles of Jewish corpses from Dachau concentration
camp. "National Socialist Healthcare", the sign read.
Bachmann later condemned those who had made Holocaust references at the
rally. But even a cursory glance at her career reveals that this rising
star has long trafficked in some extreme positions. In October last year
Bachmann called some of her fellow congressmen anti-American. She has
said Obama holds socialist views. She has attacked global warming by
saying that carbon dioxide emissions are a natural part of the
atmosphere. "Carbon dioxide is not a harmful gas, it is a harmless gas,"
she said. She has fed into fears of a violent backlash against Obama by
saying that "having a revolution every now and then is a good thing".
She has spoken of "gangster government" in a speech viewed more than two
million times on the internet. She has dubbed Obama's plans to increase
AmeriCorps � a government volunteer service group � as a plan to
forcibly indoctrinate young people. "I believe there is a very strong
chance that we will see young people put into mandatory service...
there are provisions for what I would call re-education camps for young
people," she told an interviewer. Her language in opposing healthcare
reform has been bloodcurdling. At a recent event in Colorado she told
her audience: "What we have to do today is make a covenant, to slit our
wrists, be blood brothers on this thing. This will not pass. We will do
whatever it takes to make sure this doesn't pass." She is also extremely
socially conservative, strongly opposing abortion and gay marriage, and
deeply religious. She has described herself as a "fool for Christ".
Such extreme statements and beliefs have made Bachmann a figure of both
fun and fear among liberal Americans, especially in her home state of
Minnesota. "It is hard to think that people take her seriously. But on a
national level it is happening. It scares me," said Aaron Landry, a
senior correspondent at MNpublius.com, a Minnesota-based politics blog.
But what makes liberal Americans laugh or cry has got the conservative
wing of the Republican party extremely excited. In an article that sent
shockwaves through America's political classes, top conservative
newspaper columnist George Will recently wrote a piece anointing
Bachmann as a new star of the movement. "Some of her supposed excesses
are... not merely defensible, they are admirable," Will wrote. It is
easy to see why Bachmann is being so enthusiastically embraced by
conservatives. The high profile of Palin showed the impact a
charismatic, young conservative woman could have on the right wing of
the Republican party.
"Politics on the right used to be a parlour game played by old, white
men," said Bowler. Palin changed that and Bachmann has followed. They
have replaced the dulcet tones of grey-haired Washington senators with
Midwestern vowels and Alaskan twangs. They have risen swiftly through
careers forged a long way from Washington, wearing their outsider label
as a badge of pride. They have given conservatism the look of a
middle-American suburban soccer mom with first-hand experience of
raising a family in tough times.
That is certainly much of Bachmann's appeal. She was born in Iowa and
then moved to Minnesota. When her parents divorced, her mother was left
to fend for herself. Bachmann has known what it means to scrimp and save
to get by. But she made a success of herself. She and her husband now
run a small business in mental health and she is the mother of five
children. She has also given foster care to a staggering 23 kids.
Political legend has it that her career began when she spoke out at a
local Republican party meeting after her state senator had shifted his
politics in a liberal direction. When asked by others in the crowd if
she herself should try to unseat the incumbent, she gave a speech that
so excited those assembled that she was plunged into the race, which she
went on to win. It was the unlikely start of a career that has now come
to national prominence.
But Bachmann � and Palin too � are more than just individual
politicians. They have come to represent a mass social movement that
stretches far beyond just turning up on election day. It is no
coincidence that both Palin and Bachmann have inspired lines of
T-shirts, coffee mugs and action figures for their fans to snap up. That
movement first made its appearance during John McCain's rallies after he
picked Palin for his running mate in the 2008 election. The choice
electrified what had been a fairly moribund campaign. Suddenly crowds of
thousands were turning out to Republican rallies, as well as Democratic
ones. They were there to see Palin, not McCain.
Palin's brand of homespun wisdom, rooted in uber-patriotism and killer
heels, was a breath of fresh air that conservatives had been looking
for. So were unashamedly conservative views and a willingness to state
bluntly what she thought about Democrats. Palin's subsequent
self-destruction in a series of media interviews only served to make her
more popular.
Indeed, to examine the impact of both Palin and Bachmann is to see an
America split firmly into two different worlds. The first is a liberal
one where such politicians make outlandish comments that become the butt
of jokes on the Daily Show or Saturday Night Live. The other is one
where Palin and Bachmann are the victims of a liberal media that hates
its own country. "For their supporters, attacking Palin and Bachmann
actually gives them the proof that they are the victims that they
already believe themselves to be," said Bowler. To the conservative
mind-set, these women are truth-tellers who are viciously attacked
precisely because of the validity of the message that they are carrying.
That side of the great American divide is about to get a prolonged
period in the sun. This week Palin begins her book tour, touting her
autobiography. It is already a massive hit and leaks have hit the
internet, generating stories and gossip. Palin is set to talk about her
feelings about her daughter's pregnancy, dish dirt on McCain and his
aides and slam the very same media that once slammed her. Her tour is
like a mini political campaign. She and her family are set to travel by
bus across America as she shuttles from stop to stop. She is also
shunning large cities such as New York and instead going to small towns
and out-of-the-way states.
It is a stunning reversal of the situation after the McCain-Palin ticket
lost, when McCain's staff tried to distance themselves from Palin and
blame her for the defeat. But now McCain, hated by many conservatives,
has retreated quietly to the Senate, while Palin powers from strength to
strength.
But the political future is not likely to belong to Palin. The trouncing
that she received in the media during the presidential election campaign
and the fact she currently holds no office have rendered her political
power symbolic. Though it is not impossible, it is hard to imagine Palin
launching a credible run in 2012. But what she has done is pave the way
for an extremist conservative candidate to emerge as the Republican
nominee. The excitement coursing through the conservative movement, and
the power wielded by its media stars such as Rush Limbaugh and Glenn
Beck, has made selecting any sort of moderate very difficult.
Palin's legacy could be to place the 2012 nomination in the hands of the
people who supported her. Could that recipient be Bachmann? It is an
outside bet. But Bachmann has spoken of it, couching the question in
religious terms that are deeply familiar and beloved of her followers.
"If I felt that's what the Lord was calling me to do, I would do it,"
she told one conservative website of her potential presidential
ambitions. Such comments have filled liberals with scorn and fear. "Most
people don't think she can have presidential ambitions. She's too
crazy," said Landry. "But a lot of people in Alaska thought that about
Sarah Palin."

are little more than willing tools of powerful corporate interests who
have robbed America of it's wealth and destroyed he remnants of what
was once known as the middle class. Without jobs, housing and medical
care, they are non--persons and the situation is not improving. For
America to rebuild itself, we must have jobs which pay a living wage,
affordable housing and healthcare. To oppose this hurts millions of
decent hardworking Americans with families, many of whom are homeless
and by invoking God into her logic, she thinks she is righteous and
leading a crusade against those "socialists " as she calls them, who
take issue with her decision to harm her fellow human beings for
corporate earnings.
Remember when Cheney referred to the evangicals as the " crazies in
the basement.." . Even he knew that they were easily
manipulated.Waging war against other people by denying them healthcare
is a godless thing to do.

Americans are constantly told that they have to defend themselves
against people who "hate them", but without understanding why they are
hated. Is the cause our secular democracy? Our appetite for oil? There
are lots of democracies in the world that are far more secular than
the United States (Sweden, France...) and lots of places that want to
buy oil at the best possible price (China) without arousing any
noticeable hatred in the Middle East.
Of course, it is true that, throughout the Third World, Americans and
Europeans are often considered arrogant and are not particularly
liked. But the level of hatred that leads a large number of people to
applaud an event like September 11 is peculiar to the Middle East.
Indeed, the main political significance of September 11 did not derive
from the number of people killed or even the spectacular achievement
of the attackers, but from the fact that the attack was popular in
large parts of the Middle East. That much was understood by Americans
leaders and infuriated them. Such a level of hatred calls for
explanation.
And there can be only one explanation: United States support for
Israel. It is indeed Israel that is the main object of hatred, for
reasons we shall describe, but since the United States uncritically
supports Israel on almost every issue, constantly praises it as "the
only democracy in the Middle East" and provides its main financial
backing, the result is a "transfer" of hatred.
Why is Israel so hated? The constant stalling of "peace plans" in
favor of more settlements and more war aggravates that hatred, but the
basic cause lies in the very principles on which that state is built.
There are basically two arguments that have justified establishing the
State of Israel in Palestine: one is that "God" gave that land to the
Jews, and the other is the Holocaust. The first one is deeply
insulting to people who are profoundly religious, like most Arabs, but
of another creed. And, for the second, it amounts to making people pay
for a crime that they did not commit.
Both arguments claim that it is right for Jews, and only Jews, to set
up a state in a land that would obviously be Arab, like Jordan or
Lebanon, if not for the slow Zionist invasion. This is illustrated by
the "law of return": any Jew, anywhere, having no connection with
Palestine whatsoever, and not suffering from the slightest
persecution, can, if he so wishes, emigrate to Israel and easily
become a citizen, while the inhabitants who fled in 1948, or their
children, cannot. Add to that the fact that a city claimed to be holy
by three religions has become the "eternal capital of the Jewish
people" (and only them) and one should start to understand the rage
that all this provokes throughout the Arab and Muslim world.
It is precisely this [Jewish supremacist] aspect that infuriates most
Arabs, even if they do not have any personal connection to Palestine.
This situation delegitimizes the Arab regimes that are impotent in the
face of the Zionist enemy and, after the defeat of the region's two
main secular leaders, Nasser and Saddam Hussein (the latter thanks to
the U.S.), leads to the rise of religious fundamentalism.
The conflict over Palestine goes beyond the second class status of
Israeli Arabs or even the treatment of the Occupied Territories. Even
if a Palestinian state were established on the latter, and even if
full equality were granted to Israeli Arabs, the wounds of 1948 would
not heal quickly. Arab leaders, even religious ones, can of course
sign peace agreements with Israel, but they are fragile so long as the
Arab population considers them unjust and does not accept them
wholeheartedly. Palestine is the Alsace-Lorraine or the Taiwan of the
Arab world and the fact that it is impossible to take it back does not
mean that it can be forgotten . (I am not arguing here in favor of
"wiping Israel off the map", or in favor of a "one state solution" but
simply underlining what seems to me to be the root and the depth of
the problem. In fact, I am not arguing for any solution partly because
none seems to me to be attainable in the short term, but, more
fundamentally, because I do not think that outsiders to the Middle
East should propose such solutions.)
There is no sign that any of this is understood in Israel by more than
a few individuals; if Arabs hate them, this is just another instance
of the fact that everybody hates Jews and it only proves that they
have to "defend themselves" (i.e. attack others pre-emptively) by any
means necessary. That is bad enough, but why isn't this understood in
the United States either? There are traditionally two answers to that:
one is that the population is manipulated into supporting Israel by
the government, the arms merchants or the oil industry, because Israel
is a strategic U.S. ally; the other answer is that the United States
is manipulated by the Israel lobby. The idea that Israel is a
strategic ally, if by that one means a useful ally (useful to, say,
the oil interests, broadly understood), although widely accepted,
specially in the Left, does not survive a critical examination. That
may have been the case in 1967 or even during the Cold War period,
although one could argue that, even then, the Arab states were
attracted by the Soviet Union only because it might support them in
their struggle against Israel, albeit ineffectively. But both in 1991
and in 2003, the United States attacked Iraq without any help from
Israel, even begging Israel not to intervene in 1991, in order for its
Arab coalition not to collapse. Or consider the post-2003 occupation
of Iraq, and suppose that the goal of that occupation is control over
oil. In what sense does Israel help in that respect? Everything it
does (the currents attacks on Gaza and Lebanon for example) further
alienates the Arabs, and U.S. support for Israel makes the control of
oil harder, not easier. Even the Iraqi parliament, Malaki and Sistani,
who are the closest to allies that the United States can find there,
condemn Israel's actions.
Finally, just imagine that the United States would make a 180 [degree]
turn and suddenly side with the Palestinians, as they did with the
Kosovars against the Serbs. Such a change of policies is by no means
impossible: when Indonesia invaded East Timor in 1975, the US
supported the invasion by providing most of Indonesia's weapons. Yet,
25 years later, the U.S. supported, or at least did not oppose, East
Timor's accession to independence.
What effect would that have? Can anyone doubt that such a change of
policy would facilitate U.S. access to oil fields and help it gain
strategic allies (if any were still needed) throughout the Muslim
world? In the Middle East, the main charge against the United States
is that it is pro-Israel, because it lets itself be "manipulated by
the Jews". Therefore, if Washington switched sides, there would be no
more basis for hostility to U.S. presence, including its control over
oil. Thus the notion of Israel as "strategic ally" makes no sense.
This leads us to the "Israel lobby" answer, which is closer to the
truth, but not the whole truth. To get a complete picture, one has to
understand why the lobby works as effectively as it does, and that
depends on factors lying outside the actions of the lobby itself.
After all, the militant Zionists constituting the lobby are a minority
among Jews, who themselves form a small minority of the American
population. The Israel lobby does not work like other lobbies, for
example, the arms and the oil industry lobbies (which is one of the
reasons why it is easy to dismiss it as irrelevant, as long as one
does not understand how it really exerts its influence).
Of course, like the latter, the Israel lobby does fund electoral
campaigns and its power derives in part from its ability to target
people in Congress who deviate from its "line". But if that were all,
it could be easily defeated -indeed. There are other sources of
electoral funding, the big industrial lobbies for example, and if the
pro-Israel candidates could be shown to be paid to serve the interests
of another state, their opponents could denounce the people who
receive money from the lobby as some sort of agents of a foreign
power. Just imagine a pro-French, pro-Chinese or pro-Japanese lobby
that would try to significantly influence the U.S. Congress.
Certainly, money alone cannot suffice.
What protects the Israel lobby is the fact that anyone who would
denounce an opponent funded by the Lobby as a quasi-agent of a foreign
power would immediately be accused of anti-Semitism. In fact, imagine
that big business is unhappy with the current U.S. policies (as it
well may be) and wants to change them-how could they do it? Any
criticism of lobby influence on U.S. policy would immediately trigger
the anti-Zionism-is-anti-Semitism accusation.
So the strength of the Israel lobby resides in part in this second
line of defense, which itself is linked to its influence on the media.
But even that could easily be defeated-not all the media are under the
lobby's influence, and, more importantly, the media are not
all-powerful: in Venezuela, they are anti-Chavez, but Chavez regularly
wins elections. In France, the media were overwhelmingly in favor of
the "yes" vote to the referendum on the European Constitution, yet the
"no" won. The problem-and this is why the Israel lobby is so
effective, is that it expresses a world view that is accepted too
easily by too many Americans. After all, nothing could be more
ridiculous than accusing someone of anti-Semitism because he wants or
claims to put America's interests above those of Israel. Yet, the
accusation is likely to be effective, but only because years of
ideological brainwashing have predisposed people to consider U.S. and
Israeli interests as identical-although instead of "interests" one
speaks of "values".
Associated with this identification comes a systematically hostile
view of the Arab and Muslim world, which both increases the lobby's
effectiveness and is in part the result of its propaganda. There is an
almost total lack of understanding of the Arab viewpoint on Palestine,
and, in particular, of the [Jewish supremacist] nature of the problem.
It is this triple layer of control (selective funding, the
anti-Semitism card, or rather canard, and interiorization) that gives
the lobby its peculiar strength. (And that is also why it is easy to
dismiss its strength by saying, for instance, that, obviously, Jews
don't control America. Sure, but direct control is not the way it
works.)
People who think that it is the arms or the oil industry that are
running the show in Washington as far as foreign policy is concerned
should at least answer the following question: how does it work? There
is no evidence whatsoever that the oil industry, for example, pushed
for the Iraq war, the threats against Iran, or the attack on Lebanon .
(There is a lot of evidence that the Israel lobby pushed for the Iraq
war; see Jeff Blankfort, A War for Israel). They are supposed to act
secretly, of course, but where is the evidence that they do? And if
there is no evidence, even no indirect evidence, how does one know?
Profits from the war, at least for major corporations, haven't
materialized yet, and there are many indications that the U.S. economy
will suffer a lot from war-related expenses and the associated
deficits. On the other hand, it is enough to open any mainstream U.S.
newspaper or TV and read or hear opinions expressed by Zionists
calling for more war. War needs war propaganda and a supporting
ideology, and the Zionists provide it, while none of this is offered
by big business in general or the oil industry in particular.
When people in the antiwar movement divert attention from Israel by
blaming big oil or big business for the wars (specially the one in
Lebanon, or the threats against Iran) one should demand that they
provide some evidence for their claims. Challenge all the apologists
or excuse makers for Israel or its lobby within progressive circles.
When politicians and journalists claim that Israel and the United
States have common interests, ask what services exactly has Israel
rendered to the United States recently. Of course one can always point
to some (minor) services; but, then, ask them what a cold-blooded
cost-benefits analysis would reveal and why such an analysis is
impossible to undertake publicly. If they speak of common values (the
fallback position), provide a list of discriminatory Israeli laws for
non-Jews.
It is true that a change in the U.S. policy with respect to the
Israel-Palestine conflict would change nothing about traditional
imperialism-the United States would still support traditional elites
everywhere, and press countries to provide a "favorable investment
climate". But the conflict in the Middle East, involving Iraq, Iran,
Lebanon, Syria, and Palestine, has all the aspects of a religious
war-with Islam on one side and Zionism as a secular "Western" religion
on the other. And wars of religion tend to be the most brutal and
uncontrollable of all wars. What is at stake in the de-Zionization of
the American mind is not only the fate of the unfortunate inhabitants
of Palestine but also unspeakable miseries for the people of that
region and maybe of the rest of the world. The ultimate irony in all
this is that the fate of much of the world depends on the American
people exercizing their right to self-determination, which, of course,
they should.
