LONDON (Reuters) - An unidentified member of the British royal family
has been targeted in a sex and drugs blackmail attempt, the Sunday
Times newspaper reported.
The newspaper said the plot involved two men demanding 50,000 pounds
($100,000) or they would release video of what they said was a royal
aide performing oral sex, apparently on the royal, and snorting
cocaine that had been in an envelope they suggested was received from
the royal.
It is the first time in more than a century that a member of the royal
family has been the target of an alleged blackmail plot.
A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said: "It is a police matter and the
police are investigating and we don't have a comment."
The Metropolitan Police issued the following statement in response to
an inquiry about the story:
"A 30-year-old man and a 40-year-old man appeared at City of
Westminster Magistrates Court on 13th of September, each charged with
one count of blackmail.
"They were remanded in custody to appear at the Old Bailey on the 20th
of December," the statement added, referring to London's central
criminal court.
The hearing was held behind closed doors.
Reporting restrictions prevent identification of the royal in question
or any witnesses.
The newspaper said the plot came to light in August when a man
telephoned the royal family member's office to make the threats.
The police were called in and set up an operation in which a detective
posing as a royal aide met the two men in a London hotel on September
11 and was shown the video.
The men were arrested immediately afterwards, the newspaper said.

Given the British legal system of nothing being published except

The paper alleges that the extortion attempt was launched on 2 August
when a man telephoned the Royal Family member's office and said he had
evidence that they had supplied an aide with an envelope containing
cocaine.
According to the Sunday Times, the caller then claimed that he had a
video tape showing the aide performing oral sex on someone, whom the
alleged blackmailer indicated was the Royal Family member.
During further calls, one of the men said that he had footage of an aide
snorting cocaine, the paper adds.
The report alleges that a detective posing as a member of the royal's
staff arranged a meeting at the Hilton hotel on London's Park Lane on 11
September, where parts of the video were shown.
But Scotland Yard detectives who had been secretly filming the meeting
from an adjacent room then arrested the two suspects, it continues.
A Scotland Yard spokeswoman said the magistrates' hearing had been held
"in camera", or in private, and that reporting restrictions had been
imposed to prevent the victim or witnesses from being identified.
'Vast family'
Former Palace spokesman Dickie Arbiter said royal officials would have
carried out their own inquiry into the validity of the Sunday Times
story, but that it was unlikely that the name of the Royal Family member
would be revealed.
"It's a vast family, there are nearly 40 members... We don't know, we
won't know, until the case comes to trial at the Old Bailey in December,
and we might not even know then, which member of the Royal Family [it
is]."
Mr Arbiter added that he was surprised by how long it had taken for the
story to break.
"It's taken six weeks for it to come to light, so how serious is the
allegation?
"It's interesting too, that it's come out in the Sunday Times and not
one of the usual tabloid scoops.
"So it's going to take the due process of the law to determine was this
true or was this just another fake sting?"

There's a current US tab ---I can't remember which one, sorry-- with
pics of Harry apparently doing some cocaine. I didn't look at the
article--again, I apologize for my half-assed reporting--so I don't
know if it mentioned anything about sex. Maybe they just went with
the drugs angle, because if they were going to mention the sex part
seems like I'd have noticed it whether I was trying to or not.

Who is the British royal family member at the center of the sex and
cocaine scandal? It's not Charles, Edward, or even Harry but Viscount
David Linley, son of the late Princess Margaret, twelfth in line to
the throne, sources tell Radar.
His story is blowing up the British papers today, but British law
prohibits any of them from naming the hard-partying royal. As the tale
goes, two men demanded £50,000 from 45-year-old Linley in return for
footage allegedly showing a royal aide talking of gay sex with him.
The aide is also allegedly seen on a video tape taking cocaine from an
envelope embossed with Linley's name.
After receiving the threat, Linley called the police who arrested the
two men in a sting operation at the London Hilton in Park Lane. The
veracity of their claims is still unclear.
Linley, whose mother was the queen's sister, is viewed as one of the
few royals to have a successful career. His father is the English
photographer Lord Snowdon Linley-real name David Armstrong-Jones-the
chairman of Christie's auction house and a highly successful furniture
and interior design manufacturer. Linley's clients include Elton John,
Oprah Winfrey, and Mick Jagger. He designed a 60-foot boardroom table
for the Metropolitan Museum of Art as well as several yachts for
Arabian clients. He's often in New York generating business for
Christie's, though the auction house say they are distinctly nervous
at the prospect of his name becoming involved with the scandal.
He married aristocrat Serena Stanhope in 1993 and the pair have two
children. In 1990, Linley took the unusual step, for a royal, of suing
a British tabloid, the now defunct Today, over a story accusing him of
rowdy behavior in a London pub. He was awarded £30,000 in damages.
Last year it was revealed that William Banks-Blaney, an Irish salesman
working in Linley's London furniture store had broken up the marriage
of Gregory Barker, a prominent conservative politician.

What stupid black mailers. Here is how you blackmail a royal: You let
them know that you have pictures of them doing the deed and tell them
you are going to give it to the newspapers, and you are informing them
"just so they will be prepared". Perfectly legal. The royal will offer
to buy the pictures (perfectly legal) and you dont end up in prison. If
the royal doesnt offer any money, you put them up for sale to the gossip
rags.
