--New Yorkers have three local rooting interests in the upcoming second
season of "Project Runway." And the one who is showing her true colors
is Zulema Griffin, a young designer with at least eight independent
movies and an off-off-Broadway musical to her credit. The producers of
"Runway" have been unusually tight-lipped about the crop of 16
contestants chosen for the hit reality series that turned fashion
design into "Survivor" with straight pins. But Zulema, who's first
photo for the show was by far the most outrageous, has more than a
little experience in theatrical design. She was the costume designer
for "A Perfect Fit," starring Adrian Grenier from HBO's "Entourage,"
which debuted last summer, and "Men Without Jobs," a hip-hop buddy film
also starring an HBO actor, Andre Royo from "The Wire." She even has
some TV experience, designing clothes for an ABC Family pilot called
"Taylor Made," starring Erik Estrada and Nickelodeon personality
Candace Bailey. The show was never made into a series. The other New
Yorkers are Daniel Vosovic, at 24, one of the youngest in the
competition, and Emmett McCarthy, one of the oldest at 42.
--"Sopranos" star Michael Imperioli and wife Victoria, whose new
Studio Dante theatre is now up and running (after years of hard work),
are staging their first production. Michael's directing and Victoria's
producing "Late Fragment," a drama written by Francine Volpe that's
running through Saturday at the 65-seat theater (257 W. 29th). The
play, starring Nick Sandow, revolves around a married couple and the
effect of Sept. 11 on their marriage. (Keep in mind that Michael's
managing all this while filming "The Sopranos" during the day.) Tickets
can be purchased through Ticket Central (212-279-4200).
--Network publicist Beth Feldman and entertainment producer Yvette
Corporon are shopping a book proposal with a catchy-but-true title many
working moms can re late to. "Role Mommy . . . Peeing in Peace: Tales &
Tips for Type A Moms" is already creating a buzz, and will include
stories from some very famous working mothers. Feldman and Cor oron are
repped by Claudia Cross at Sterling Lord Literistic - who's received
some interest from some very high places in the publishing world. Let
the bidding begin.
--"Yes, Dear" co-star Liza Snyder (Christine) will direct a November
sweeps episode of the CBS sitcom centered around Jimmy (Mike O'Malley).
In other sweeps news, it's expected that one of the "Las Vegas"
regulars from this sea son will go to the "Big Casino" (as Frank
Sinatra called death) next month. Stay tuned.
--She still has a long way to go to catch "America's Most Wanted" in
the "helping nab fugitives" department, but in formation aired on Nancy
Grace's Headline News show, "Nancy Grace," last Wednesday helped
capture a fugitive wanted for child molestation - the third time in
formation aired on the show has led to an arrest.

--DENIS Leary is among the hordes of hockey fanatics who are thrilled
that the NHL is back after last season was put on ice because of the
players' strike - but he isn't eager to spill his own blood on the
rink anytime soon. The rough-and-tumble "Rescue Me" star has suffered
plenty of pain while playing his favorite sport. "Once, I got
high-sticked in the mouth and all my top front teeth were cracked in
the middle and I had to get them bonded," Leary says. "I have broken
both my ankles and several toes. I broke my shoulder from a check and
had to have an operation. My nose has been broken four times, and I
have a sideways bump on both the left and right side, although it is
not visible in my profile. I have had over 200 stitches to my face."
One of the most memorable beatdowns he suffered was at the meaty hands
of former Philadelphia Flyer enforcer Rick Tocchet. "I was playing in
an exhibition charity game against Rick Tocchet, who was a top fighter
for the Philadelphia Flyers," Leary continued. "Tocchet was getting out
of hand with late hits and high elbows, so I challenged him, and he
just attacked me instantaneously. I thought I would have a chance to
get a punch in - we are the same size - but he overpowered me right
off. "I just hung on, trying to cover up. Tocchet landed 15 punches in
a row to my face. I was really bleeding, but I am proud I did not go
down. After the game, we were still friends." Leary says that, with all
of his broken bones, he's been taking an anti-inflammation drug to
stave off possible arthritis. Still, he told Webster Hall curator Baird
Jones: "I don't think they should change the basic rules of hockey to
eliminate fighting or the hard hits. In fact, for all the injuries I
have sustained, I still think hockey violence is blown out of
proportion. I love the game." As a matter of fact, Leary would like to
see some violence on the golf green, too. He tells Golf magazine that
the pro game is too "sedate" and thinks it would be better "if Tiger
Woods just hauled off and belted Phil Mickelson in the face and then
they pulled each other's shirts up over their heads and went at it.

--THE latest eruption in the volcanic love affair between Ivana Trump
and her young Italian boyfriend, Rossano Rubicondi, had him banging on
the door of her East 64th Street townhouse with a couple of cops by his
side, demanding to have his clothes and jewelry back. Rubicondi had
lived there with her for two years until recently. The drama took place
Wednesday afternoon. "She wasn't in the house. She was in L.A," a
spokeswoman for Ivana told us. "It was all a misunderstanding." Ivana
had already rented Rossano an apartment around the corner and had boxed
up all his things for the move. He was all squared away the next day.
"He right now wants to concentrate on having a career," Ivana's
spokeswoman explained. "He needs space." The call was listed in the
logbook at the 19th Precinct as "family dispute, boyfriend/girlfriend."
Sources say they remain friends. "Yesterday they were fighting," sighed
one pal. "Today they made up."
--Jackie Mason is in talks to play a bumbling Jewish detective in a
yet-to-be-titled new film.
--NO matter that Chanel, Burberry and H&M dropped Kate Moss like a hot
potato when she landed on the front page of London's Daily Mirror on
Sept. 15 cutting and snorting lines of cocaine. Yves Saint Laurent is
so proud the model owns one of its handbags, the firm sent out a press
release with a photo this week. "Kate Moss wears an Yves Saint Laurent
Cruise 2006 'Muse' oversized bugatti bag in ivory while in New York on
Sept. 13, 2005," the release said, noting the bag sells for $1,295.
Moss - wearing sunglasses, jeans and a belly-bearing vest - looks
fine in the photo.
--"A HISTORY of Violence" director David Cronenberg could get violent
with "Million Dollar Baby" writer Paul Haggis. The directorial dust-up?
They both released movies titled "Crash." Cronenberg's - about folks
who get a sexual kick from fender benders - was a '96 Holly Hunter
NC-17 car-nal embarrassment that grossed about $2 million. Haggis' was
this year's hit, with Matt Dillon, Sandra Bullock and Don Cheadle,
which grossed $68 million worldwide. Cronenberg told Fox News Channel's
Bill McCuddy: "I thought it was very disrespectful, not just to me, but
to J.G. Ballard who wrote the book 'Crash' in 1973, which is very
famous. In France, they refuse to call [Haggis' movie] 'Crash' because
they have reverence for that book and for my movie. They call it
'Collision.' I think that their argument, that they couldn't think of
an other title, is a little bit bogus." And when McCuddy asked the
oddball director about a possible sitdown, Cronenberg said, "I don't
know how I would react if I met Paul Haggis. He's also Canadian. You
know, we're basically peaceful people, but there was the fur trade, and
it got nasty."
--FOLKS in Paris are still talking about last week's opening of the new
Louis Vuitton flagship store. Sharon Stone, who did the ribbon-cutting,
"showed up in a Louis Vuitton coat with nothing underneath!" said our
source. "That was it - like a flasher! She wore it as a dress."
Mingling with Stone was Eve, Karl Lagerfeld, Catherine Deneuve and
Winona Ryder with her "friend" (according to her rep) "Murderball"
director Henry Alex Rubin, whom she met on the set of "Girl
Interrupted." Salma Hayek was also there but was guarded fiercely by
her publicist. "Salma is so lovely. Shame about the publicist," another
guest laughed. "She [the publicist] is more demanding than her
clients!"

--FRIDAY I told you about Prince Charles who schleps here next month
with Camilla the bride to let everyone fete them and fuss over them.
Like all of MoMA gets taken over Nov. 1 for a big-time gala dinner in
their honor, etc., etc. I told you he'll do his first-ever USA sit-down
TV interview. Him alone. Not Camilla. I told you it's a huge "get"
since CBS, ABC, NBC, Spike TV, everyone flopped all over themselves to
nail it and it went to "60 Minutes." I didn't tell you that's because
Chuck's p.r. aide went to college with a senior producer at that
program. I also didn't tell you because then I didn't know but now I
know, Steve Kroft will do the interview. And if you're very nice to me
I might eventually tell you of the flap about Charles visiting Ground
Zero. Some, sniffing he should've hustled his royal bones here straight
away after 9/11 and made an appearance in N.Y.C. that very week, oppose
it. And if you're very very nice to me I might even report on all the
hostesses jockeying to be the privileged ones to entertain The
King-in-Waiting and his Junior Grade Queen.
--NEXT month model Vanessa Hayden becomes Mrs. Donald Trump Jr. in the
same Mar-a-Lago venue as last January model Melania Knauss became Mrs.
Donald Trump Sr. She'll also wear white. Differences are, no wedding
planner. "I'm doing it all myself," she told me. She nervous? "Not yet.
Right now I'm still relaxed." Relaxed enough to be at Royal Chie, Chie
Imai's East 59th Street furrier from Japan, picking out "a little shawl
to wear over my wedding gown in case the evening is chilly." How chilly
evenings are in Palm Beach, I don't know. How warm everything is for
Vanessa, I know. She's now official ambassador for Royal Chie. So
somehow that "little shawl" could graduate to a big coat.
--Elizabeth Irwin High School student Javier Picayo raised $17,000 for
tsunami relief last year. Tonight he's got Richard Gere doing a reading
and Susan Sarandon donating raffle items, and all proceeds to Habitat
for Humanity.

--'WHEN YOU kiss a girl, you can never kiss that hard!" So observed
director Ang Lee as he watched Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger
practice their love scene in "Brokeback Mountain." This film, which
opens next month, has become known as "the gay cowboy movie." But it is
much more, and certainly more than the by now not terribly shocking
sight of two men kissing on-screen. (Long gone are the days of "Sunday
Bloody Sunday" when the embrace between Peter Finch and Murray Head
caused audiences to yell out loud in dismay.) Jake, who also stars in
the eagerly awaited war movie "Jarhead," tells Premiere magazine that
the theme of "Brokeback" is "If you have love, no matter what that love
is, whatever the boundaries, you have to hold onto it."
--RALPH FIENNES had just come from a massage when he showed up at the
Mercer Hotel down on Bleecker Street. Whatever Ralph - pronounced
"Rafe" - looked like before the kneading, he was now a vision of
relaxed comfort and geniality - casually dressed, careless sexy hair,
flip-flops on his pale well-tended feet. The Mercer lobby/sitting area
used to be appealingly dim. Now, it's lit like a, well . . . hotel
lobby. Was this too exposed? He laughed, "This is fine with me - do
you want to be mysterious?" Ralph does not have the huge soulful eyes
of his more elusive brother Joseph, but he does flash an amazing smile,
a sexy, friendly grin that transforms his thoughtful face. The actor's
big current movie is "The Constant Gardener," which co-stars Rachel
Weisz in a breakthrough performance. This is a thriller/romance for our
time. Based on John LeCarre's novel, directed by Fernando Meirelles it
is an intense, swiftly edited tale of pharmaceutical companies run
amok, the scourge of AIDS in Africa, a woman who'll risk her life and
reputation to uncover the truth, a husband deeply in love, consumed by
suspicion, wracked by guilt, desperate for redemption.

--Pam Anderson, Paris Hilton, Colin Farrell and Tom Sizemore all shared
the spotlight with lovers in their homemade sex tapes. But, in the
latest entry in the annals of amateur porn, model Cory Bernstein is
definitely the star of the show. No one can satisfy Cory like Cory,
based on what we've heard of his video. Left to his own devices, the
Versace and Armani mannequin manages to fill an hour with private
gratification. Until now, Bernstein's acts of onanism were confined to
the blogosphere - where he trafficked in items about his purported
encounters with Hilton, Farrell, Fabian Basabe and others. (His site is
www.corythemodel.com.) Word is that he made the tape on his own, but
that it fell into the hands of an ex-lover who threatened to sell it.
Phoenix-based agent David Hans Schmidt won't discuss how he got his
copy, but is already taking bids for DVD and Internet release. "There's
never been a just-male celeb video," says Schmidt. "I believe this one
will have cross-over appeal."

--Yoko Ono's ears must have been burning the other night when friends
toasted Cynthia Lennon, first wife of the beloved Beatle, on her new
memoir, "John." Everybody at the Cutting Room was buzzing about Yoko's
gratuitious dig at Paul McCartney at London's recent Q Awards, where
she claimed her husband was a better writer and singer. Cynthia still
recalls the kindness Paul showed her and son Julian after John jilted
her for Yoko.
--Chloe Liederman will join the ladies dancing around the pole at the
Bada Bing on next season's "Sopranos." Her father, Mickey Mantle's
co-owner Bill Liederman, told pals at Zocalo that he couldn't be
happier with her exposure
--Tommy Mottola wants a piece of that "American Idol" audience. We hear
the former Sony Music chief is developing a battle-of-the-bands show
for NBC.

--"It was death by Coldplay!" Bono declared after losing a bidding war
to Chris Martin at a celebrity-designed lunchbox auction the other
night. The two Euro-rockers were vying for a lunchbox styled by Michael
Stipe at the celeb-glutted event benefiting the Food Bank for New York
City when Martin finally prevailed with a $20,000 offer. Bill Clinton's
lunchbox - which the ex-Prez adorned with a photograph of himself,
obviously - wasn't quite as hot a commodity, fetching $11,000 from U2's
The Edge. Among the other guests who turned out at Wooster Projects
Gallery were Alicia Keys, Charlize Theron, Mike Myers, Naomi Campbell,
Peter Sarsgaard, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Helena Christensen.
--Superman will fly again on the cover of tomorrow's Daily News. To
mark the DVD release of the first season of the 1950s series
"Adventures of Superman," 100,000 copies of New York's Hometown
Newspaper - featuring a commemorative "Daily Planet" cover - are being
handed out free at New York City transit hubs.

--A&E has been quietly filming Alexis Arquette, of the famous acting
clan, as he undergoes the process of changing from a man to a woman.
Arquette, 36, has had supporting roles in "Pulp Fiction," "Lords of
Dogtown" and the B-movie "Killer Drag Queens on Dope." He is also one
of the cast members in the next installment of VH1's "The Surreal
Life," which is finished filming and bows in January. His housemates
include Florence Henderson, Tawny Kitaen and Sherman Hemsley. Director
Matthew Barbato plans to culminate the two-hour documentary with the
surgery, although Arquette is said to be still weighing his options.
There is no word from A&E on when the film will premiere.
--Ashton Kutcher is back for a new season of "Punk'd" Oct. 30 at 10
p.m. on MTV. His victims this year include Neve Campbell, Daddy Yankee,
Kristen Bell, Amber Valletta and Kelly Monaco. At 10:30 p.m., MTV will
premiere the new series "Homewrecker," a perfect companion piece to
"Punk'd." Starring "Jackass" alum Ryan Dunn, the series helps prank
victims get revenge on the pranksters.
--Nicole Sullivan appears in her final episode of "King of Queens"
tonight (8 p.m., WCBS/Ch. 2). The actress has played trusty dog walker
Holly for four seasons. From now on, she can be seen exclusively in
ABC's "Hot Properties" (Fridays at 9:30 p.m.).
--Sundance Channel will air Brian Williams' documentary about the
recent devastation in the Gulf Coast, "In His Own Words: Brian Williams

--It's all hush-hush, but I hear: Rumblings that Mick Jagger and Sir
Richard Branson met in Las Vegas in the past week with local Internet
concert producer Larry Pfeifer. The project: the concept of having
gambling on Las Vegas-bound plane flights. Real estate developer Ian
Bruce Eichner, the man behind the $1.8 billion Cosmopolitan tower going
up south of Bellagio, has been meeting with some well-known local
nightclub and restaurant names. At one of the meetings, Los Angeles
nightclub promoter Brent Bolthouse, who partnered with the Hard Rock
Hotel on Body English, brought in rockers Matt Sorum and Dave Navarro
to pitch a weekday show similar to MTV's "Total Request Live" featuring
the musicians.
--Radio talk-show king Rush Limbaugh is flying in this weekend for the

--Sometimes it pays to be the damsel in distress. Claire Forlani just
wrapped the tentatively titled big-screen fantasy "Dungeon Siege,"
based on the video game, and says she was fortunate in not having to do
much acting to a blue screen for the effects-laden film. "Everybody
else had to do it, but I did the least of that because I was stuck in
the woods a lot of the time," says Forlani, who stars in the fantasy
tale with Jason Statham, Leelee Sobieski, Ray Liotta and Burt Reynolds.
"I play Jason's wife. Ray plays this character who has captured me, and
Jason is on a race to save me throughout the film." Meanwhile, the
actress - who has starred in such films as "Meet Joe Black," "The Rock"
and "Basquiat" - has "Ripley Under Ground" coming up with Barry Pepper,
Tom Wilkinson, Willem Dafoe and Alan Cumming. Pepper takes over the
role of the Tom Ripley character played by Matt Damon in the 1999
adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's best-selling novel "The Talented Mr.
Ripley." "Barry ends up faking being this artist who actually died, and
we're all trying to make money," says Forlani. "Alan and I play this
despicable couple, and whenever anything goes wrong, we just smoke more
cigarettes and take more coke."
--Fans of Lions Gate's psychological/horror thriller "Saw" - who helped
it gross more than $100 million worldwide last year - won't be
disappointed in "Saw II," due out Oct. 28. At least, that's the report
from Emmanuelle Vaugier, who stars in the sequel with Donnie Wahlberg
and Glenn Plummer. "It's more of everything ... more traps and
contraptions, more gore, more blood, more queasiness throughout the
entire movie." The Canadian actress, who has recurring roles on "One
Tree Hill" and "Smallville," says she's happy to be out of the blood
and guts for a while. She shot the upcoming "House of the Dead 2: Dead
Aim" late last year, began "Saw II" in January, and just wrapped the
lead in the big-screen sci-fi thriller "Unearthed," with Charlie Murphy
and Tommy Dewey. "I was covered with dirt and blood for the majority of
the (latter) movie, and after looking like crap for six weeks, I was
feeling a little depressed," she says. "Then I went shopping and found
myself looking at the girliest things and realized I just want to feel
pretty again. I think I need to do a 180 with my next movie. I told my
agents, 'Let's do a romantic comedy.'"
--Jennifer Coolidge, whose role on NBC's "Joey" as the title
character's Hollywood agent has been expanded this season, admits, "I
felt bad for them at the beginning. They couldn't just sort of sneak in
and do the show and get it the way they wanted it. The show got
promoted so highly, and everyone was asking, 'Will it be as good as
'Friends'?" It felt like they had a lot going against them," she says
of star Matt LeBlanc and the rest of his team. "This year, I think they
figured out a lot of stuff." The show continues to struggle in the
ratings, however. Fortunately for the super-talented Coolidge, she
keeps getting job after job on the feature side.

--For the eighth straight year, Friends' Matthew Perry thanked the
woman who helped make him a star by hosting her Lili Claire Foundation
charity gala Saturday night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Just a few
years after casting the Friends pilot, Leslie Litt-Resnick lost her
daughter, Lili Claire, to a neurogenetic birth defect known as Williams
syndrome. "She did an amazing job casting the show, obviously, and
she's done an even more amazing job spearheading this charity," said
Perry. Since Friends ended in 2004, Perry has been steering clear of
series TV. He sidestepped questions about appearing on Matt LeBlanc's
struggling Friends spinoff, Joey. In the audience were some of Perry's
real-life friends, including Paul Rudd and Lauren Graham of WB's
Gilmore Girls. Lisa Kudrow made her first appearance since HBO canceled
