LONDON - Jennifer Lopez says she identifies with the hotel housekeeper she
plays in her film, "Maid in Manhattan." "That's who I am," Lopez said at the
movie's British premiere Wednesday. "I started out in the Bronx, I know what
it's like to get on the train every day and work 9 to 5 and to have dreams and
aspirations. I definitely see a lot of me in the character."

The 32-year-old actress-singer greeted some of the hundreds of fans who lined
London's Leicester Square. Her fiance, Ben Affleck, did not accompany her to
the premiere.

In the Cinderella-style romantic comedy, Lopez plays a maid at a fancy
Manhattan hotel who falls in love with a wealthy guest, played by Ralph
Fiennes, who mistakes her for a socialite when he sees her trying on a designer
outfit.

Lopez played down a report in London's Evening Standard newspaper that she
swept into the city Tuesday night with an entourage of 35, including security
guards, makeup artists, hairdressers, a personal fitness trainer and a dietary
adviser.

She declined to say how many people had accompanied her. "I don't have a big
anything. People credit me with much more power than I have," she said.

She lies about everything. Her parents are solidly middle to upper
middle class. Two teachers? Puleeze! That's a lot of cash! 2
teachers in a poor district like SF make about $120,000 a year, and SF
is on the LOW end of the entire Bay Area! Teachers start low, but
once they get tenure they do pretty well. She's a phony HO!

Teachers get tenure after 3 years. If you are teaching 5 years, and have 30
credits above your Master's, you make $50,000 as a NYC teacher. I think it
tops out at about $80,000. That is now. I don't know what it was in the
80s -- I will ask my mother. It wasn't nearly as good then -- I know that.
Anyway, the salaries now are ok -- but they really don't go that far in
NYC, not even in the Bronx, where J. Lo is from. I have seen pictures of
where she grew up, and I would say she was middle class at best. J. Lo was
NOT upper middle class, but she was not poor, either. Her parents were
working people, and she knew she would have to be a working person.

Re-read what I wrote. I said 2 teachers. Not one. I am saying both
her parents are teachers. I don't know if BOTH are, but I thought
BOTH were.

Oh -- I know you said two parents. I was just giving the information on
teacher salaries. Actually, I think only her mom was a teacher.
BTW -- and this may sound depressing, but if you have two parents making
$100,000 combined, and those two parents have three children -- in NYC --
that makes you middle class. Rent here is insane, and if you want to buy a
small 2 bedroom apartment in a decent neighborhood, you had better be
willing to shell out AT LEAST 600,000 -- and that's cheap. Sigh. BTW -- I
totally agree with you -- I don't think she is totally honest about her
background -- she exaggerates.

Listen, I live in San Francisco. I know all about insane rents. Yes,
I know that the amount you and I listed would make you middle class.
That's what I was saying, she's not really "from the hood", nor from a
home without money as she is purporting to be, nor know "all about the
ghetto". All of it is BS about her background. Her parents did fine
in the money department. Maybe they even helped finance her in the
early days before she had money?

Oh -- SF rents -- you poor thing. I don't know if her parents helped her
financially or not. I think not, because I have heard her mother was VERY
unsupportive of her going into the entertainment biz. She wanted her in
college, and she told her that if she wasn't going to be in college, she
woud have to do it on her own. J. Lo is from Castle Hill. It's a
blue-collar neighborhood where people can and do own their own modest
houses. It's okay -- working class, small attached houses, nice enough, but
not fancy. There aren't a lot of stores, maybe some bodegas. It's not the
'hood -- but it sure isn't upper middle class. It's lower middle class, a
community for people who want to do the best they can for their children.
It's what I call a striving community. It's heavily Latino. I don't know
what J. Lo claims, but that is what Castle Hill is. I am also pretty sure
that since J. Lo's family owned their own home, they were cash poor. They
had equity -- their house, but that sure can put a drain on your income and
savings. They never went hungry or anything like that, but I don't think
they had a lot of money for luxuries. They spent their money on the
important stuff -- private Catholic school, a home. She probably didn't get
great clothes or jewelry, or the things girls want growing up, but her
parents spent their money on the stuff that really matters. There probably
wasn't a lot left over.

I agree with you. Money does not go far in NYC. What seems like a lot
really isn't at all. But like you said JLo did not grow up poor by any
means.
Her parents probably gave her a decent upbringing but JLo strikes me
as someone who wanted more and probably spent all her time at Saks, Bendels,
Madison Avenue wishing she had 100 times more than what she was given.
Poor is a relative concept. A friend of mine who grew up in a nice house in
a
nice neighborhood, had a nice, decent car (when she was a only a student)
and went to a nice, respectable college, always considered herself poor
because
she didn't live in a mansion, in an uppercrust neighborhood, had an ultra-
selective private school background & went to Princeton to become
"well-connected".
I wonder how JLo's parents feel about her blasting all over how "street" &
poor she was
when her parents really did provide sufficiently for her. I hope she took
them aside and
said to them that basically she's talking crap so she can sell records and
have people feel sorry for her.

Just imagine if she had taken even just half of the excessive amounts she
now spends on vanity items on a daily basis, and divvied it up to the needy
or even modestly needy in her "'hood". She probably could have brought
comfort to most the population and really made an impact; instead she sings
about them (about herself really, since that's what it's all about), perhaps
makes a relatively modest donation once and again, and continues budgeting
100's of thousands weekly to continue her "down to earth" lifestyle. The
sheer numbers are obscene, and the girl wears far too much make-up, as if it
can help hide her "real" looks, whatever they might be (darker and duller, I
suspect). God it still looks like hell when she cakes it on!

She is obscene. If she had even an ounce of talent perhaps she would be
bearable but she is just some nightmare piece of marketing. I have to
wonder(and hope), if she's the next MC Hammer, someone who burns out finite
funds in a blaze of gargantuan excess. She's not Bill Gates, after all, just
a sub-Madonna who's time at the top is nearly finished. Has anyone ever
heard anyone confess to being a fan of hers? With her entourage of hundreds,
she's probably barely solvent at this point, not to mention the alimony list
that grows by the day.

I agree with every word, Cliff, except for that part about "singing". I
don't know what it is but I don't think it's singing.

What's amazing is that even with all that money, she's incredibly,
incredibly cheap.

That just about says it all.

If you try listening to one of her songs, it's sooooo obvious she is either
using back-up singers to plump up her vocals, or she is using some type of
technology to enhance her voice. It's so clearly not even her singing. Have you
ever heard her sing live? Every time I've seen her on TV singing she has always
been using tracks and lip-syncing. Madonna is the same. When she truly sings
live, her voice is weak and shaky and off-key. She depends on back-up singers
and enhancements when she records just to sound half-way decent. But when she
sings live she looks like her lungs will explode.

Both she and her sister graduated from the high school I did, which is a
private school. It wasn't ridiculously expensive but obviously those below
the poverty line (as J.Lo seems to claim she was) would not be able to
afford paying for two daughters to attend. I find it REALLY offensive when
she makes statements like "I was the girl with the hole in my shoe" when
there are people who genuinely can't get by.

Did she attend Catholic school? That's really expensive!! I have friends who
make a combined household income between 40-70 grand and they put all their
kids through Catholic school. The end result is that this is a HUGE financial
sacrifice.
