Moronic Pat Robertson Blames Devastating Earthquake On Haiti's "Pact
With The Devil"

{{{ntvnat video goes here}}}

Pat Robertson made a ridiculous proclamation on The 700 Club that the
reason Haiti was affected by the earthquake is because of a "pact with
the devil" they made to be free from the French.

Disgusting.

Watch the idiocy above and keep Haiti in your thoughts and prayers.

I'm surprised he didn't say: "Donate money to The 700 Club and help
keep the Devil -- via an earth quake -- away from Virginia (their HQ)
and keep us safe." (the kooky liberal westcoast? ah, fuck them!
they're not one of us any way!")

Ah, Pat Robertson, a pillar of tolerance.

I've long been aware that guys like Robertson see God as an angry old
man with bad aim, who sends tsunamis and earthquakes to punish the
guilty but somehow manages to take out a lot of ordinary people as
collateral damage (while leaving a lot of evil people sitting pretty
in their palaces). But this adds a new wrinkle: God is also REALLY
SLOW, and waits decades or centuries to wipe out, not the people who
(in this case) made a deal with the devil, but their distant
descendents.

I suppose this is the kind of God Pat Robertson would want to be, if
he were God.

After going through that list, I find the following two paragraphs to
be unnaceptable:

":On race relations in the late 1940s and early 1950s: "There were no
politics to polarize us then, to magnify every slight. The 'negroes'
of Washington had their public schools, restaurants, bars, movie
houses, playgrounds and churches; and we had ours." (Right from the
Beginning, Buchanan's 1988 autobiography, p. 131)"

- This is far too glib as it avoids the reality of an anti-
constitutional regime that was operational at that time.

"Writing of "group fantasies of martyrdom," Buchanan challenged the
historical record that thousands of Jews were gassed to death by
diesel exhaust at Treblinka: "Diesel engines do not emit enough carbon
monoxide to kill anybody." (New Republic, 10/22/90) Buchanan's columns
have run in the Liberty Lobby's Spotlight, the German-American
National PAC newsletter and other publications that claim Nazi death
camps are a Zionist concoction. "

- And this is flat-out false as I know for a fact that diesel engines
do emit enough CO to kill people.

But all the rest of the list is within the bounds of debate. Yes,
Buchanan does skate close to the edge... and yes, he does goad his
opposition, but he does not directly challenge reality. Instead, he is
pushing his opinion.

PS: I never understood what was upsetting to some factions to have
catholic nuns build a convent near a concentration camp in catholic
Poland. What was that about? Religious contamination by having nuns
pray for the souls of the dead?

Does DR really "prosper"? The resorts there are nice, but they're

It certainly isn't. Plus, a large GDP doesn't make a place not a
shithole - a large *per capita* GDP makes a place not a shithole. And
the DR's 119th in the world by that measure, and behind Costa Rica,
Panama, Grenada, Mexico, Barbados, and all the other touristy countries
in the area.

Haiti is certainly more of a shithole than the DR. But most of the DR
is, indeed, a shithole and not "prospering".

Robertson said that God is punishing the American right for Bush and
his cronies destroying the economy. That's why they've got their

Again, the issue here is relativity. You can argue that the Dominican

Besides, compared to Haiti, they are prospering infinitely in
humanitarian measures. Haiti has completely mismanaged their
resources. Here's a site with a telling picture:

http://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/vis/a000000/a002600/a002640/

Look at how the deforestation is rampant on Haiti's side, where the
opposite is true in the DR. This is the cause for significant deaths
due to mudslides and drowning any time a tropical storm passes

The Haitian government is corrupt, they have no true infrastructure,
80% of the country is in abject poverty. These problems don't exist
to a marked degree in the DR.

Sorry to be a pedantic ass, but:

You didn't ask why it prospered in relation to Haiti - your question
assumes that it's understood that the DR *does* and Haiti *doesn't*.
There's a difference, and that's why I replied. The DR does not
"prosper".

If you're just saying that Haiti is more of a shithole than the DR, I'm
on board.

> You can argue that the Dominican
> Republic is a shithole, but if you compare it to the rest of the
> Caribbean it really isn't *that* bad.

I've been there five times. Outside the resorts, it's *really* bad.
Yes, not as bad as Haiti, but still don't-go-anywhere-without-an-armed-
escort bad.

There are ~30 countries in the Caribbean and Central America. The DR is
19th in per capita GDP.

Again, no argument that Haiti is worse. But DR's income distribution is
very disparate: half of its citizens has 18% of GNP, so the *average* per
capita of the lower half is around $2400, which isn't so far from Haiti's
$1700.

Put it this way: if you had to be dropped off on Hispaniola, you'd
choose the Dominican Republic. But if you had to choose anywhere in the
Caribbean or Central America to be dropped off, the DR would be at best
in the bottom third of your list.

Great. Costa Rica and Panama have higher per-capita GDP than the DR,
which jibes with your observation. Nicaragua's is lower. I didn't say
that the DR is the second-worst by measure, I said it was the eleventh-
worst.

Which islands in particular are you comparing it to?

Yes and now Danny Glover has made a stupid comment about this as
well. These tragic events bring out the idiot in some people,
Robertson and Glover especially. Pat Robertson is a senile old man
and Danny Glover is no better. I am ashamed of both of these idiots
and I'm also ashamed of obama not reacting faster than what he has.
And shame on the African American young woman sitting besides
Robertson while he spewed his hateful comments. Today, I'm ashamed of
my fellow Christians for not criticizing Robertson more vehemently.
He's a disgrace to us "real" Christians as far as I'm concerned.

I hate to say it, but if we all listened to that nutcase 15-20 years ago
we'd be in none of the trouble we are in now. I don't think his
isolationalist plan is 100% on the mark but separating ourselves from
the mideast problems and ONLY sending money over there for tangible
products might have saved the whole area. Saudi Arabia would have taken
over by now but what the fuck should we care? If Middle
eastern-Americans want to lobby for sending our money over to Israel,
Palestine, Kuwait or wherever let them send the money they spend on
lobbyists and leave the US taxpayers out of it.

Let them starve a little and the religious disputes won't seem as
important anymore.

In defence of whay Robertson said, Haiti it seems 'is' cursed by bad karma,

Statement Regarding Pat Robertson's Comments on Haiti
http://www.cbn.com/about/pressrelease_patrobertson_haiti.aspx

CBN.com - VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., January 13, 2010 -- On today's The 700 Club,
during a segment about the devastation, suffering and humanitarian effort
that is needed in Haiti, Dr. Robertson also spoke about Haiti's history. His
comments were based on the widely-discussed 1791 slave rebellion led by
Boukman Dutty at Bois Caiman, where the slaves allegedly made a famous pact
with the devil in exchange for victory over the French. This history,
combined with the horrible state of the country, has led countless scholars
and religious figures over the centuries to believe the country is cursed.
Dr. Robertson never stated that the earthquake was God's wrath. If you watch
the entire video segment, Dr. Robertson's compassion for the people of Haiti
is clear. He called for prayer for them. His humanitarian arm has been
working to help thousands of people in Haiti over the last year, and they
are currently launching a major relief and recovery effort to help the
victims of this disaster. They have sent a shipment of millions of dollars
worth of medications that is now in Haiti, and their disaster team leaders
are expected to arrive tomorrow and begin operations to ease the suffering.
