Speaking of animal rights, the late Gianni Versace's name is back in the news.
Fur fighter Dan Matthews is raising hackles by calling the designer's killer,
Andrew Cunanan, one of the gay men he most admired "because he got Versace to
finally stop using furs." The PETA spokesman's comments in Genre magazine,
which named him one of the leading Gay Men of the Century, have inspired an
avalanche of angry letters to the gay monthly.
Don't expect Matthews to apologize anytime soon. "I would be surprised if the
Versaces are really upset," he told us. "Have you ever been to a Versace
fashion show? They're like trashy funerals."
The spokesman for the Versace empire declined to comment.
Versace's taste in art obviously wasn't too trashy. His collection —
including 25 drawings and paintings by Pablo Picasso — was auctioned off at
Sotheby's in London yesterday for almost $17.9 million. Highlight of the
bidding was the sale of Picasso's portrait of his eldest daughter, "Young Girl
With a Boat," which went for $5.9 million.
