DIRECTOR Mike Nichols went nutso for six months when he fell victim to
Halcion-induced psychosis. Nichols once sold off a priceless collection of rare
masterpieces by Matisse, Balthus and other painters at cut-rate prices because
the controversial drug made him believe he was going broke. "I had a panic
depression in which I suffered the delusion that I was a pauper inevitably
headed for a debtor's prison. I had good friends who went over my assets
million by million, and at the end all I would be doing is weeping that I was
broke and that my children would be destitute after my death," Nichols told
Webster Hall art curator Baird Jones at the Writers Guild East awards dinner.
Nichols hit rock bottom after "selling off everything I owned at these fire
sale prices," and the ensuing anxiety made him take even more Halcion. His
doctors finally figured out what was up a bit too late. "I just couldn't buy
back my art. The collectors just wouldn't give the stuff up at any price."
