I'll always love John Candy's bit as Johnny LaRue doing Evelyn Wood's Speed
Drinking commercial.  With SNL and SCTV, the 70's ruled for great ensemble
comedy.

dan
always loved Joe Flaherty's Pittsburgh references

Eugene Levy slumping under the table, with coke-bottle glasses on,
asking "San Frensisky?  Did someone say San Frensisky?"

-Lola Hetherington (Catherine O'Hara) on the Sammy Maudlin Show:  "I
want to bear your children!"  "Haw haw haw!"...

Andrea Martin at the piano as -- can't get her name -- the country
singer, based on Patsy Cline's "I'mm sorry....so sorry..that I made
you sad...

Except Martin's take goes  "I'm happy....so happy...to have made you
happy too!

Eyes well up with tears; "MA MAAAAA!", back of wrist pressed to her
forhead  (meanwhile the party swirls all around her.  One more repeat
and she runs from the room.

"Time with Libby Wolfowitz"  (Martin) when guests came to kvetch on a
gaudy set of pillows and silks.  (And there is no way this "interview"
is going to stray from the subject of Libby...)

Tommy Shanks, the Mayor of Melonville (Candy):  Fireside scene opens
with Mayor in a cardigan, a comfortable ottoman and a pipe.  Beside
him is his stuffed dog.

"Hi," goes.  "I'm, Tommy Shanks...Mayor, of Melonville," smiling in to
the camera for way too long.  "Y'know, that contract for repairing,
the sidewalk in front of our nine-unit Restful Hills Home, is still on
the table...heh heh, well, as long as Granny doesn't end up on the
table, ghuhuishushuhu ["snoprt!"]...."   Big suck on the pipe.  "Well,
that's about all.  G'night!"  He waves to the camera.

Music up and fade to black.

Keepers, all of them!

ps  for totally dead-pan humour rent Cannibal Girls,[1973] with Eugene
Levy and Andrea Martin.  It's a low0budge Canadian effort made in a
satellite town of Toronto.  We thought it was fascinating/hilarious
from the get-go, but a couple more viewing s has revealed gut-hurting
seriously-presented tossaways like when the first stop at the
"recommended" motel and step out into the streaky snow, leaden sky
hanging just above the tacky 50's Motel.  Martin, who has never been
"this far north" with her beloved before, hooks her arm into his and
wonders -- as the wind picks up:  "Has it always been this beautiful?"

Dir by Ivan Reitman (before he did Ghostbusters)...written by
almost-then SCTV regulars.

Play it for your parents/friends, making no comment before or during.
After, you can open it up for them, like the quite frightening sceen
when they try and escape the Cannibal Girls and the Chevy dies.  Wind
is howling.  Ignition tried RURURU RU*sput* Ruu...behind them they
know the CG are honing in.  Andrea, wanting desperately to help, eyes
wide in fright suggests in a little voice:  "Maybe the tires are flat?

Enjoy.

I don't know of any Patsy Cline song like that. Might you mean Brenda Lee's
"I'm Sorry" with these words?

I'm sorry, so sorry
That I was such a fool
I didn't know
Love could be so cruel
Oh oh oh oh uh-oh oh yes
You tell me mistakes
Are part of being young
But that don't right
The wrong that's been done
(I'm sorry) I'm sorry
(So sorry) So sorry
Please accept my apology
But love is blind
And I was to blind to see.
Oh oh oh oh uh-oh oh yes
You tell me mistakes
Are part of being young
But that don't right
The wrong that's been done
Oh oh oh oh uh-oh oh yes
I'm sorry, so sorry
Please accept my apology
But love was blind

Sorry

No it's a spoof of Connie Francis, or a commercial for her greatest hits

Yeah, Sid Dithers!  Remember "The Jazz Singer" when he's disappointed
his son Al Jarreau won't become a jazz singer, he'd rather be a cantor

Her co-star, of course, was Sue Bopper-Simpson, widow of the late great Big
Bopper--another great Catherine O'Hara performance.

I  hope the DVD isn't all Doug & Bob McKenzie.  At a minimum, it should contain
LOTS of O'Hara.  I'd like to see  Lola Heatherton's comeback special ("Lola:
Bouncing Back to You") , the Dusty Towne Sexy Holiday special (with John Candy
as Divine), and her imitations of Elizabeth Taylor and Brooke Shields..

Yeah loved The Tubes with The Fishin' Musician -- didn't they go boating
in the Everglades and kept getting stuck in the reeds...Also Joe Walsh
was a trip on that show.

So many great musical guests.  I enjoyed Dave Thomas's brother Ian,
played a song I liked, don't know the name though.  It went something
like "Hold on, nothing has changed... tell me why do i feel this way..."

How about Mel Slirrup and "Mel's Rock Pile"?  At the time when punk was
starting to hit the North American shores, Mel had on the Queen Haters,
featuring most of the SCTV cast dressed up as punks.  That had to be one of
the most hysterical skits, visually speaking.

"I.P. Nightly"
"Nice of you to come to the show I.P.  And what's your friend's name?"
"Rusty.  Rusty Bedsprings."
