"Not only was this a rare find for the Chubb's Antiques Roadshow, but
it also one of the finest examples of sculpture from the Tang Dynasty
that has appeared on the market in recent years," said Lark Mason,
Senior Vice President of Sotheby's, who appraised the item at the
show. "I was completely overwhelmed to find this item in Albuquerque,
NM. I was almost speechless!"
The lion figure was brought to the show by a resident of Chimayo. It
was given to her by her grandmother. The figure was created during the
Tang Dynasty, which ruled China from 618 to 907 A.D. The Tang Dynasty
was a golden age of Chinese art. The capital of the Tang Dynasty,
Chang An, had a population of over 1 million people and was the most
cosmopolitan city in the world at that time.
Other interesting finds included a 1908 watercolor painting by the
famous English book illustrator Arthur Rackim from a translation of a
mid-summer nights dream, with an insurance value of $70,000 - $80,000;
a necklace and a locket given to the owner by the wife of Abraham
Lincoln valued at $2,500 - $3,500, and an bright indigo striped Navajo
weaving purchased in 1870 valued at $15,000 - $20,000.
Owners of the items asked that their names not be revealed.
