NY POST/NEAL TRAVIS...

THE mostly negative reviews she got for her new movie "Sweet November" aren't
going to bother the 25-year-old star, Charlize Theron. The South African-born
stunner has been through far worse than a critical drubbing. Charlize is on the
cover of the March issue of Tatler and, for the first time, tells the
London-based magazine about the tragic events that rocked her family a decade
ago.

She admits to having told previous interviewers that her father died in a car
crash. But documents show he was shot dead by Theron's mother, Gerda. It was
self-defense, Charlize says.

"The only reason I was never honest about this before is that there are a lot
of people in my life, including my mom, who didn't ask to be in the limelight
and I feel like it's my prerogative to keep them out of it," she says. "What
happened was very sad . . . I wish things had been different."

She admits her relationship with her abusive father was "really, really bad."
He had a drinking problem and would disappear for weeks.

He returned from one of his binges the day Charlize returned home from boarding
school for a weekend holiday. He started threatening both his wife and daughter
and Gerda took a gun and killed him.

No charges were ever filed in the case. Within a few weeks of the killing,
Charlize had quit school and flown to Milan to begin a modeling career. Her
mother later persuaded her to try her luck in Hollywood, and eventually joined
her there.

Gerda lives nearby and the two are like sisters. Charlize says that, ever since
she started growing up, she has been protective of Gerda.

"I dig my mom," she adds. "I like spending time with her. She's a cool lady . .
. maybe that's the bottom line."

I guess we should all feel sorry for her and go out and see her movie? I think
not!
