It's interesting to contrast his conservatism with John Wayne's. He
named names before HUAC, just like Wayne or Elia Kazan. But because he
was quiet about his politics he didn't catch much hell about doing so.
Being a legitimate war hero didn't hurt either.

The Democratic party, has become so far left in the last decade. If, you look at Truman, he would have been a Republican, today. The Democratic party is anti-capitalism, and big government, the party is much alligned with a French government, do nothing, and get government entitlements.
