OT: knock-off "Designer" handbags vs. the real deal...

I want a Coach or a Louis Vuitton and was at the mall yesterday and looked
at both (we FINALLY got an LV boutique around here) but I just can't spend
that much. Well, the Coach I could do, but definitely not the LV. So I
looked online and there seems to be a lot of websites that offer knock-offs.
Of course, I have no idea how reputable they are (I won't list any of the
sites I found right now b/c I don't want someone to think I'm peddling the
sites, I'm not! I'm not trolling, but am really asking about this).
But what I wonder is: if I were to get a knock-off Coach or LV, can someone
tell just by looking at it that it's not the real deal?

I don't know the answer to your question - I'm guessing someone who *knows*
the brand would clearly be able to tell it's a knockoff, but, interesting
you pose this question...
I've bought several knockoffs myself - off Ebay usually - and I'm quite
happy with them. I don't really care if Jane at the supermarket knows I
spent $60 instead of $6,000 on my handbag.
But also - I happened to look at the Jan. issue of Harper's Bazaar at the
beauty salon yesterday (Julianne Moore on the cover), and there were two
things.... many pages advertising VERY expensive bags - one was $22,000! No
kidding!
But then there was also an article ON knockoff handbags, and how the
countries that produce them (I admit a few of mine did come from Hong Kong)
use child labor in sweatshops.
Didn't have time to read the whole article, but I think I may go buy it so I
can.
I also suggest you post in alt.fashion - the gals over there will
undoubtedly be of more assistance to you on this subject.

I can spot a knock-off Coach, Louis, Dooney or Rolex from far away....and
if your shoes are cheap, I can tell a mile away that it doesn't fit.

"Real" designer handbags last forever. Think of all the handbags you
will buy in your lifetime. Add up the dollar cost. I'd bet it will be a
lot MORE than that $600 LV bag you have your eye on in the store. That
also goes for wallets and shoes. You can pay for quality and have an
item of beauty that lasts. Or pay for crap and the bag looks it after a
month.

What if I'm just using it cuz I like it (the size is ideal for me). My
husband got an LV knockoff in Hong Kong (I could give a shit if it's
real or not). My mother received a real one and I couldn't tell any
difference--they say it's the label inside. Funny she thought it was
fake til someone told her...now she feels nervous carrying it around!

That's a good point. However, I have a knock-off LV bag that has
lasted for over two years now and in fact doesn't have one thing going
wrong with it -- no stitches are coming loose. Nothing else is coming
loose. Sure, it's a knock-off. But I wanted an LV bag and I just
didn't have the $800+ it would have cost, so I paid $100 for this one
and I have to admit: I've been happy with it. I expect to get a lot
more use out of it given that it still looks as good as it did the day
I got it.

What's good about the LV purse is that if anything goes wrong or needs

I've got a large MCM purse with matching wallet that's nine years
old, looks new, and has outlasted any of the cheaper purses that
my friends by 3-4 times a *year*. Figuring that they spend about
$50 each time, I actually spent less....and it's kind of an
"undercover" thing that I don't see homeless people sporting.

I don't get some of this stuff. LV Bags are ugly. Rolex watches are
ugly. My $30 Casio has more style. Now, some of the overpriced designer
stuff has nice lines and have appeal, but paying big bucks for something
that is not even aesthetically pleasing, I don't get it.

ITA. Must-have designer handbags are usually both ugly and huge. They must
weigh seven or eight pounds when empty. Rolex watches are also ugly and
huge. Rolex's print ads are weird -- women in evening gowns wearing clunky
watches the size of a dinner plate.

I wouldn't say LV bags are ugly, but that LV logo plastered all over 'em is
tacky...it just screams "Look at me! I spent $800 on this purse!" But I hate
logo merchandise in general. I guess it's reverse snobbery : P I like some
expensive bags, but only if they have a discreet logo, or none at all.

I forgot about D & B. Husb gave me one once. By now it's a very old D & B
bag, a big one, khaki-coloured (or OD green maybe) leather with tan/brown
trim IIRC. Don't use it much, but still like it. It has an oval tan, raised
logo sorta thing on it somewhere I think? Still looks new. Wonder if it'd
sell as a good vintage item on ebay? Not that I'm planning to sell it... I
hate that Gucci bags are mostly fabric nowadays. Just saw an old one in a
vintage shop, and the leather was in fantastic condition, beautiful bag.
Much better than the new ones. Am still thinking of buying it, tho it may be
gone by now.

Yup. They're worth the money. I had some *big* D&Bs when I was
working, and gave them all to the thrift store. I kept the small OD
one, which looks like new and it has to be about 15 years old.
But...here's another tip: I think D&B still gives you 50% towards
the purchase of a new bag (direct from the factory) if your old
one gets damaged. Those solid brass, heavy zippers are
pretty much bullet-proof .

Several years ago I gave all my designer bags and shoes I hadn't used in
awhile (except the D & B and a couple of other things) to a committee who
was doing a charitable sale, and I was also helping with the organizing.
When I went in the morning of the event - NONE of my stuff was there. NONE
of it. It had all been "sold" to another committee member the night before.
I was so dumb. She made money off of that stuff herself, turning around and
selling it thru another channel. The committee member who sold it to her had
no idea what the stuff was. I couldn't believe it. And folks who'd wanted to
buy it from me personally, when they found out I was donating all of it -
I'd foolishly told them, no, they had to wait for the official sale day. And
it had all disappeared...

Like the time the co-manager of the local Salvation Army invited my daughter
and I to the back room, to go through unsorted books. The manager found us
there five minutes later, and chased us out. Not because we were there
unauthorized, but because he had a "deal" with another bookseller who got
first choice of everything. I told him I'd pay a *fair* price....but he
turned me down. I think the manager *was* the bookseller.
People cheat, everywhere.

The way of the world I guess. I'm reminded of once in a Salvation Army store
here, I was looking at a bit of jewellery, at one little silver ring in
particular. Right under my nose an employee reached over and plucked the
ring away, to keep for herself. Unbelievable. Try to patronize certain
places because it's a *good* thing, but sheesh. I do like wandering around
those stores though - just because... so much life lived in all the items
stocked therein... (Shame about the thieves tho.)
