A Native American tribe has emerged as the new owner of the Hard Rock
cafe chain, in a deal today worth $965m (£490m).
The Seminole Tribe of Florida, renowned as the most enterprising tribe
of Native Americans, has bought the music memorabilia-themed burger
business from the Mecca bingo group, Rank.
The tribe already operates two franchises for the 124-strong Hard Rock
restaurants chain and beat off strong competition to buy the chain.
Other bidders are thought to have included Robert Pittman, the
co-founder of MTV. The Seminole tribe has extensive business interests,
ranging from cattle ranching to gambling, and runs Hard Rock-branded
hotels and casinos on its reservations in Tampa and Hollywood.
They plan to capitalise on the fame of the 35-year-old Hard Rock brand,
a favourite on tourist T-shirts the world over.
Hard Rock owns the world's biggest rock memorabilia collection,
including guitars once played by rock legends Pete Townshend and Eric
Clapton, which it displays on its restaurant walls.
It's wonderful what you can afford if you don't have to pay income and
other taxes like everyone else does.
Duh, ALL Native tribal people in the US have to pay income tax just
like
all you squatters on our lands. State income tax is another matter
however,
since federally recognized tribal reservation lands are not under the
jurisdiction
of the states where they are located. Tribes are soverign nations and
their governments and can
tax their own and non-Indians for goods purchased on their lands.
But the *businesses* are protected. If you live near any area that has
Indian casinos, you hear the locals complaining all the time about how
the tax money (if it was paid) would help the local economy.
But THEY get a free ride-and non-Indians foot the bill. It's time the
laws were changed. But the Bureau of Indian Affairs just does nothing.

Uh, the Indians' lands and livelihoods were STOLEN from them, Loafie,
it's time they got a piece of the "American Dream"...these casinos are
a ticket to a somewhat better life for many of them.
More power to them I say...

Would you rather they subsist on welfare and be a public burden like
you are...???
