MOVIELINE Feb Blind Item #2

Old Tricks

It was a smart move for that older megastar to agree to share the screen
with that much younger and hotter actor in that big action flick. What
wasn't smart, though, is that the old coot was too lazy to meet
face-to-face with the whippernapper before he signed on the dotted
line. When the two finally made contact, in rehearsals, the vet was
blown away by the young hunk's height - he was a foot taller than he had
expected. That's why there are no full-body shots of the two stars in
the whole film-- the vintage sex symbol wore super-high platforms
whenever he had a scene with his costar.

Ledger is listed as anywhere from 6'1 to 6'4, and he's not 6'4. Frankly,
this sounds like a fairly generic line.

I doubt it. Harrison Ford is listed as 6'1 (probably 6'0), and Pitt is
listed (depending on the point in his career) as 5'10.5 to 6'0 (you guess
which is the real height).

Doubt it, pretty close in height and Pitt isn't exactly a whippersnapper.

Doubt it, since Redford knows Pitt very well and directed him in
A River Runs Through It ages ago. He's probably well aware of
Pitt's height.

Plus they have worked together before. Redford directed Pitt in "A River Runs

I could maybe see Stallone if only because there aren't factors involved
like working with the younger guy before, but I still have a hard time
buying any of this. None of these guys named so far is 'short', average
height maybe, and none are so much shorter than the young whippersnapper
that it would make much difference. Plus, the whole "foot taller than
expected" just doesn't make a lot of sense unless the older guy was expected
some 5'2 guy.

I've heard/read that he's short, I've heard that he's actually 5'9 or 5'10,
and I've heard that he's 5'9 or 5'10 and short. If he's 5'9 or 5'10, he's
not short. As for the heels, many men - average, short or tall - wear lifts
in Hollywood. Or boots. Or shoes with really thick soles. Perhaps moreso
now that women's shoe styles have moved toward being ridiculously tall even
for some casual shoes. Crowe wears 'em, Pitt has worn them in movies, list
goes on. Someone in the group had a link to some famous shop in Hollywood
frequented by all sorts of stars, and all they do is make height-increasing
shoes.

That sounds more like it. Having been in the prescence of R.Redford, B.
Pitt, Mel Gibson, et. al., RR and BP would be ruled out as they worked
together in flick with Anthony Hopkins and Aidan Quinn of which the name
of the film eludes me now.

RR is about 5'6". BP is about 6'1". I've stood eye to eye with both and
I'm 5'5" and a good judge of height. Mel is no more than 5'5" or 5'6".
Heath is defnitely 6'1" or more. I'd go with the Patriot and Mel and Heath.

Doubt it. Ford's over six feet tall. Can't see how Pitt could be so tall as to
cause a problem there. Besides, Devil's Own was scarcely a "big action flick"
was it?

A couple guesses:

Mel Gibon and former pro basketball player Marc Blucas in the war
movie "We Were Soldiers ..."

IMDB has Blucas's height at 6'2, but I think he's taller than that.

Al Pacino (5'5) and Ben Affleck (6'3) in the action pic "Gigli"
(although Pacino has never been a "sex symbol")

Apparently perhaps not the judge you think you are. Brad Pitt might be as
tall as 5'11, but only in the morning. I figure at the rate his height is
increasing, he'll be 6'4 by the time he's 45.

And so you're saying that you were looking virtually directly into RR and
Mel Gibson's eyes while you and they were wearing street shoes?

Perception, perhaps. If he's 5'9 or above he's average, doesn't really
matter what your perspective is. That you're several inches above average
for a female doesn't really change that. The large majority of men (close
to 90%) are 6 feet or under, and I've always read that Stallone is 5'10. I
can't buy 5'6, or else he's wearing 5 inch shoes in all his movies.

Chris Rock's 5'7", so he isn't towering over anybody. Not to mention
he isn't exactly a "hunk".

I've seen Mel Gibson and Brad Pitt in person, Leicester Square
premieres. Being a bitch I noticed that both were wearing boots with
heels on. I'm 5'10", was taller than Gibson and same height as Pitt,
therefore I guesstimate their real heights as Gibson 5'6"-5'7", Pitt
5'8"-5'9". I've heard Redford is very short, but Pitt's not tall
enough to tower over him. I guess Mel Gibson is the aging short-ass,
I've never seen Heath Ledger but I've seen Heather Graham, she's as
tall as me and he's taller than her, so I say it's Gibson and Ledger.

since 'hart's war' hasn't opened yet, it couldn't be the answer, or else how
could a movieline reader verify that they had no full-body shots in the film?
or that it's a big action film? or that these 2 have any significant scenes

It's not tall, it's average, it's not short. As for women, when I did my
paper a few years ago the stats were collected from 1980 onward, so it
includes young people, and 5'8+ puts you in a relatively small percentage of
women (older or young). I'm a shade under 6 feet, and while I may find
women who in their stacked shoes are within a few inches of me, there aren't
many. I may see several per day, but as a percentage of women I see in the
day it's very small. Women so commonly wear heels, and those platform style
shoes now, it's easy to forget the shoes are there and just think they're
tall women. Frankly I'm jealous, I wish guys could wear big stacked up
shoes if the ladies get to wear them, I'd like to be 6'3.

Because this person would have to be near Stallone regularly to be able to
say this with any certainty, and if the guy is 5'10 and towers over Stallone
in Sly's built-up boots, Stallone would have to be about 5'5 (say 3 or 4
inches for the built up boots), and then ... no, even that wouldn't work,
'towering' over someone usually implies several inches. Say 5'10 - 4 inches
(I'd still have a hard time saying 5'10 towers over 5'6), then you add the
boots and you're at 5'9 or 5'10 so virtually the same height as this guy
unless the guy is wearing thick soled shoes himself, so Stallone would have
to be actually under 5'5.

Yay, celebrity height mathematics.

I saw Demolition Man (unfortunately) the other night for the first time on
HBO and noticed that Stallone was taller than Sandra Bullock, who is a
relatively tall women herself at 5'8. And I believe she was in boots as
well, so figure he's two inches taller in the movie at minimum and I can't
see getting more than 4 inches in boots, that still puts him at 5'8, which
can't be towered over by 5'10.

There's not much difference between 5'8 or 5'9 (Willis) and Farrell (5'11).
A set of Sketchers would all but eliminate that minor difference.

Yes, I agree with the estimate of Gibson's height. I'd give him a 5'6". I
saw him in person once when he was fliming a movie in Clearwater, FL, and it
immediately struck me how flipping tiny he was. Not just short, but sort of
scrawny. The 10 lbs that the camera adds make a huge difference IMHO.

If Hollywood photographers can do such wonders with men's height
perceptions, I wonder (not really....but you know) why models have to be so
tall.

no although I didmeet a tall baseball player but I never heard of him
before so he doesn't qualify as a celebrity to me. I had no
expectations before I met him

I've always been curious about this. Usually when people express surprise
at how 'small' movie stars are, the stars end up actually being average in
height, meaning they're in the same general range as most people. If the
average guy is 5'9 in the real world, why doesn't it follow that there are a
lot of actors in that general range? I can understand if they're literally
small - don't weigh much or are very skinny - but the height thing ...

Well, I spent several days following Stallone around for an article, and saw
him with and without the boots. I'd say he is 5' 6" at most without the
boots,
5' 8" with, and I - in regular street shoes - could see the top of his head
when
we were on the set.

I should have worn heels to the wrap party - but was warned that it might
not be wise since I'd be photographed with Stallone. So, I wore flats.

BTW, I did look at his boots in the dressing suite - one inch heels and one
inch build-ups inside.
