The painting The Scream by Edvard Munch has been stolen, along with
The Madonna, also a famous painting by Munch.

But Munch painted several versions of The Scream, and the stolen
painting is not the one that 8-10 AGM'ers saw when you guys were here
in Oslo back in 97. We saw the most famous version....

So are(were) they both in Oslo? Let's hope they are found soon!
Never did understand the mind set of someone who stole famous
paintings.......if they were stolen to sell, whoever bought them could never
show them.......and what's the point of having them if you can't let anyone
know? And what is wrong with a really good print???
My brother, the artist with the 5 Porches, had 13 paintings stolen from a
restaurant that had them on display(on consignment).......the owner of the
restaurant just took them with him when he closed the restaurant and left
the state. None of the paintings has ever been found, even tho Joel had
photos of them all and the police have them on file. Joel also put notices
in several arts magazines......never a word. And it has been about 10 years
now. Joel was crushed......the paintings were about five or six years of
his work and not to mention the money involved in matting and framing!!! I
don't understand people who do that!
So, let's hope they are found soon.......

You mean the one we saw was not the one stolen? Good! But bad for the
other version though.

Mary, stealling famous paintings are not only for resell. They are
stolen by drug dealers as a 'money' exchange/guarantee. Also arts are
stolen for ransoms, i.e they know they can't sell it so they ask money
for it if the Museum/collector wants their arts back.

Yes, they were both in Oslo, but in different galleries. The stolen
version was in the Munch museum, and the version we saw back in 1997
is in the National Gallery.

Were your brother's paintings insured? The stolen painting in Oslo
were not insured against theft - how could they not be??

Morten - has heard the paintings may be in Sweden

I can understand famous paintings not being insured.....sometimes the mere
cost of insurance is so prohibitive......No, Joel's paintings were not
insured.......he's a starving artist! It was all he had to get them matted
and framed.....insurance is almost impossible. It is the same for musicians
and their instruments. Yes, you can get the insurance for instruments, but
it is so prohibitively expensive that almost no one has it....you just trust
to luck and try not to leave them in an unsafe place.
Hmmm.......I have a friend travling in Sweden just now......and he just left
Norway! I wonder if he knows Roddy!!!???

Hmm... yeah, I do recall you had a couple of empty spots on your
walls, Aouali.... Maybe Roddy has prepared a special xmas present for
you this year?

And no, the paintings were not insured.

Morten - trying to figure it out

...and shortly after the theft "The Scream" has been offeren on ebay. When
the
bids had reached $15,000 ebay took down the offer.
Somebody must have had a real bizarre sense of humor.
