to the general public as a hobby or home
science item, the danger to eyes and skin
is too great.
Any hardware offered for sale should
be made so the danger is reduced.
When I was testing a 4 foot paraboloid
dish I made in 1973, I didn't use good
judgement to protect my skin.
I don't know if it was just a co-incidence,
but afterward I started getting sores on
my face, at least I was careful not to get
concentrated rays in my eyes.
I watched a follow-on movie about
Frankenstein where solar energy was
used and one of the characters had
his face disintegrate from it, that
was spooky .......... for me. :-)

I made a mirror that would melt solder
in 1956 out of flat household mirror cut
in a circle and cemented in a 15" Buick
wheel with a tubeless tire valve put in
backwards, and a flat plate cemented
in the other side of the wheel with
aquarium cement (tar).
I used the vacuum from the intake
manifold of a car engine to curve the
mirror, and had a valve to adjust the
curve to get a focal length of about
40 inches.
The image of the sun was not
good, but it did melt solder.
Fresnel lenses have limitations
in how many suns can be concentrated,
hopefully new plastics hold up better
in the sun than they did 50 years ago.
