I can not subscribe to the MAY surname list at Rootsweb because I get a
response says that I am on hold while they examine my request due to
possible 'administrivia'. I have been through this before with this
particular list. I carry out the wishes of those in command (list owner?)
and get told I am denied. They seem to be computerized messages i.e.
automatic.
I think it all harks back to the first time I tried to subscribe through an
e-mail that was on-line instead of going through Rootsweb channels. I think
it is that e-mail that is being denied subscription. My explanations carry
no weight. I am automatically denied each time.

Lorna:

I wonder if that is normal protocol one receives if one is "banned" from a RW mailing list as I have just subscribed with MAY list and received confirmation request to subscribe with the MAY list (as I normally do with any other list previously and now).

And you have never subscribed to MAY list before?

I have and now am banned from RW lists but never have I wanted to re-subscribe to the lists I was rudely "ousted" from, so I don't know of 'administrivia' message you have received.

Unless the list-admin changes hands and new list-admin starts anew with clean "ban" list can I ever see your chance in ever gaining entrance to the MAY list. Or you can always gain entrance using another address (like many a wayward RW listers do I'm told) ahem!

"Just a thought."

Hi Lorna,

I don't know about the trouble with the MAY list but I have the MAY surname
in my family tree. My great x3 grandmother was Sarah S. MAY. In what
location are your MAY ancestors? Mine were in Maryland in the early to mid
1800's. Feel free to contact me if you would like to exchange info.

Thanks,

Alida

Have you tried both May lists? I see there's one called "May" and another
called "May Assoc".

Otherwise, have you tried following the instructions on the Rootsweb
subscription page:
"For questions about this list, contact the list administrator at
MAY-...@rootsweb.com. "

If you are barred for any reason, the Admin can discuss the matter with you.

That could be because you are sending to the wrong address.

You must send to the *request* address only to subscribe or
unsubscribe.

> I have been through this
> before with this particular list.

Probably because you are sending to the list address or you are
sending to the request address but adding comments (eg Please
subscribe me) or you have a sig file (such as is at the bottom of this
post) which hasn't been deleted before sending.

> I carry out the wishes of those
> in command (list owner?) and get told I am denied.

A list admin (not a list owner) cannot ban you from the list without
just cause. Just cause can be because you have "flamed", or been
abusive to, another list member, persistently posted commercial
information (eg I have this wonderful site, it'll only cost you $300
dollars to subscribe).

If you've sent a sub request to the list instead of the request
address, then a list admin can and often will reject your mail. That
doesn't mean you are being denied, only that you must use the correct
address.

> They seem to be
> computerized messages i.e. automatic.

Yes, they are automated responses but the list admin can edit them as
appropriate, but many/most don't. (Some admins don't realise they can
actually edit them.)

> I think it all harks back to
> the first time I tried to subscribe through an e-mail that was
> on-line instead of going through Rootsweb channels.

It wouldn't be a persistent thing in the list beyond you keep sending
to the wrong address. The other thing you might be doing is attaching
your sub request to an existing list mail. All sub and unsub mails
must be new ones.

> I think it is
> that e-mail that is being denied subscription.

If you've tried again to sub using a newsgroup posting or added
"subscribe" to an existing mail, it will be denied.

There's no file that blacklists you. So one mistake won't permanently
or continually deny you membership of the list.

If you had been added to the "Ban" list, then you'd hear nothing at
all, no denial, nothing.

> My explanations
> carry no weight.

What explanations?

> I am automatically denied each time.

Which very much suggests that you are using the wrong address every
time or adding information: all you need is Subscribe in the subject
line and Subscribe in the body of the mail and nothing else, no
please, no thank you.

The correct address is shown at the bottom of every list mail and the
address is what is known as a hyperlink: click on it and it will open
a new mail.

"Administrivia" is what happens when someone tries to send a sub or
unsub request to the list. It can also occur when a sub or unsub
request is added to an existing list mail.

> Unless the list-admin changes hands and new list-admin starts anew

That would have no effect at all. Being on the ban list wouldn't
generate any response at all

> Or you can always gain entrance using
> another address

That won't make any difference either if a sub request is sent to the
wrong address or appended to an existing mail or has additional words
in the request.

I never sent my sub request or try to send a sub request to the MAY list or any RW list.

Why am I wanting to add a sub request to a RW list? "Wot?"

If I am on the "ban" list (and I know I'm on a few), I will never be accepted unless I beg forgiveness (fat chance) and list-admin has a BIG heart to change the sentence of my wrong-doings then I can see ever being accepted and I already know about the "no response" protocol.

Charani, unless you've tried and experienced doing it, can you talk to me about what I suggested and was I suggesting to you?

Thank you. I am trying all suggestions including the admin address with no
reply so far.. I am finding things getting complicated with the suggestions
of another poster on here. I have decided that I can do without the MAY list
by using other genealogy lists.
Thanks for your help.

Can I suggest you go back and read what you wrote and then read my
reply. I never suggested that you were trying to sub to the MAY list
or any other but you were giving misleading information.

There's no need to be rude.

I know exactly what I'm talking about. For a start I've had a number
of Administrivia mails in the Pending file that I've had to deal with.

Actually, if you mean Charani, I think that suggestion was right. You
complained that you couldn't get onto the May list at RootsWeb because you
kept getting the Admin message. This does happen if someone sends a
subscription/unsub message to the actual list, rather than to the
subscription address.
Try the other May group, first sending the message to the subscription
address as given on the RootsWeb page, and see what happens. There's no
single administrator for all the RootsWeb groups, and there's no general
blacklist.

Just to straighten out one thing. I was not referring to Charani who has
been very helpful. I am concerned about someone called Mania who confesses
on alt.genealogy to being banned from other lists. She or he suddenly turned
up the next day on a list that I have subscribed to for years that almost no
one else goes to... coincidence or what?
Enquiries have been made that confirm that this person subscribes to many
Rootsweb lists and seemingly mails from Yahoo but can not be found on
Yahoo.
That is why I have decided to get off this group for a while.
Thanks for your help... today I am receiving gatewayed mail but no advice
that I am subscribed.
