What's the person's name, birthdate, birthplace, and last known
residence?
With this information someone may be able to assist you in your search.
Looking for John Doe's won't get you any nearer to the answer.
I thought that I could access John Doe death records in a particular
county and tell, maybe, by date of death. Not a good idea? Write to
police in that city or county and ask for assistance?
I have combed the SS death index and nada.
Another person combed too in case these eyes missed it - nada otra
vez. See, we are not sure if dead or alive. We are striking out on
both avenues. Last legal entry we can find is 1986. Then disappears
into thin air, it seems.
Again, What's the person's name, birthdate, birthplace, and last known
residence?
With this information someone may be able to assist you in your search.
Chasing a wild goose will only get you tired out!
I agree with Gerry. Give us some concrete information, and maybe we can
find the person for you. I found family for someone in Germany whom they
had been out of contact with since WW2. All I had was a name and FOUR
possible places they might have been. The person was dead, but wife had
kept his name for family's phone number, a common occurrence.
Let us help you.

Has e.g. the "People Search" on http://www.whitepages.com/ been looked
at ? The details returned can be a bit fuzzy (presumably as someone
wants to sell a further service) but can often mesh in with other
known information.
Tried that. Nada.
That doesn't sound too hopeful if no trace at all shows, I've seen
"stale" information for people who have died a few years ago but no
info at all IME is usually followed by finding that they are long
gone.
Depending on how far away you are searching from, you could try :-
-family graves (if any known)
-spouses who might also have since died, an obituary could refer back
to the first death
-records of wills etc. which IMU will in the USA be the same as
elsewhere, being associated with the last residence - some people
avoid the usual set of records by dying on holiday or while doing
something else away from home. They avoid their local death records
but the disposal of their estate does not generally avoid the local
court records.
-local newspaper records - the availability is rather random and even
1986 is still a bit prehistoric for many computerised indexes but card
indexes could exist in local history libraries.
-old telephone directories, mainly to give a date to assist searching
other records. Don't forgot the delay between someone disappearing
from the local system and the next up-to-date edition.
Is there a good reason to suspect that they have managed to die
anonymously or is it more likely that they have not died where they
had been settled ? One common way of achieving the latter is simply by
going to live with children in another area.

Please, let us help you with your search, which I see you have been
asking the same question for several months, without finding anything
about your lost soul.
As an introduction, I'm a former genealogy librarian with a state
historical society, and I've worked with many database systems in
various libraries and on the internet, and pride myself in being able to
locate information others have been unable to find.
So again, if you could supply the following information, either I or
some other resident of this group can help you with your search.
We need to know the following information about your lost person:
Name
Birthplace
Birthdate
Residences, especially the last known one.

Thanks for your interest. Call off the hunt - I just found proof that
the party's deceased.
What was the proof that he is deceased? I found him still listed in a
record, as still residing in Boca Raton, Florida. - Gerry
