I agree, the 'rush' is great. I can't even begin to explain how ecstatic I
was when I found a distant cousin. I can't really get out and search a lot,
so the computer has come in real handy, especially the newsgroup and all the
links. Thanks everyone for the helpful information you have shared.
Happy hunting,

I have found a number of relatives through the internet. A fourth cousin once
removed who found my query on the Franklin Co MO http://www.genforum.com.
He supplied me with a whole generation including my g-grandmothers siblings. The
JP who married her was his direct ancestor! I had my gedcom on line and one of
my people found her birth mother through my web site.I was able to extend one of
my niece- in- laws' ancestors by several generations and cousins! Also was able
to help some folks with several of my lines. I found a relative's Civil War
widow's pension application through the net from the Texas State Library. I
could go on and on.. This news group has been a LOT of help to me.. I had been
on it back in 1996-97 but got pretty tied up and have just gotten back on the
past month lurking mostly, but it is invaluable. A great group of people who
are always willing to help another genaholic : )

I have people I have been corresponding with for over three years that have
collaborated with me in research. Actually, at times I get more information than
I can process! I do have some brick walls, but God willing and the Devil don't
interfer, they will come down!

I began creating a web site in March 06 1996 and while I get a bit strapped for
time, I have tried to put information on it that will help other researchers. I
am pretty naive of methods but am learning, and when I learn about something, I
try to put it on my web site to help another beginner.

This is the best thing since the wheel and the safety pin for genealogists! AND
I do thank all the people who have spent so much time in creating all this
information.

Since they changed the format, I cannot figure out for the life of me
how to post an original message, which is why I am posting this as a
reply, when it really isn't. Please, can someone tell me how to post a
new message? I am registered with the DejaNews outfit. I can readily
find "post reply" but cannot locate anything remotely resembling "post
new." Thanks so much,
frustratedly,
Ellie

From home page (www.deja.com) click on "My Deja" in the lower left
corner. That brings you to "My Forums" with your subscribed forums
[i.e., newsgroups and/or deja forums or whatever they are called).
Click on the little green "P" (it's under the word "Post") next to the
forum to which you wish to post.

Now that Joe has so kindly explained to me how to post an original
message (apparently this function can't be accessed from power search,
which is how I've been getting to the newsgroup), I can tell you, Dot,
how to pull up the thread. When you're looking at a message, look above
the "Subject" line. Above that is a bar that says something like
"message 6 of 10." Right above that, in ~tiny~ print, is the word
"thread." Click on that and it will bring up the entire thread that
goes with the message you're looking at right then. Good luck. I detest
this new format (just to go on record).

Ellie.

Ellie, Thanks I agree. It took me forever to get MY Deja to accept my
information from MY DejaNews. I still can't get to my Deja News mail.

When you view the thread as you explain here, there is an option to
post a message to the newsgroup. Above the threads is a line "Return"
or "Post" to alt.genealogy (or whatever newsgroup the thread is in).
Klunky, but it works.

If you are only interested in some of the more "mainline" newsgroups
and can spare $25, you might want to look into Newsguy at
http://www.newsguy.com as an alternative. They provide web access
like deja.com (or nntp access if you prefer), a *much* better
interface, and no advertising.
