As a start, check the war graves commission website. I cannot remember it
off hand but you can access it via the WW1 history website at
http://www.bbc.co.uk If you find no name there it will mean that he doesn't
have a grave. You should then try to get hold of a copy of Soldiers Died in
the Great War CD rom. Your local family history society should have a copy.
This lists all soldiers who died, their rank and number, where they enlisted
and date of death. The war graves website also sometimes includes the names
of next of kin. With the rank and number, you will have more chance of
finding information. There is a good book called "Army Service Records of
the First World War" by Simon Fowler, William Spencer and Stuart Tamblin. It
os a PRO publication and gives you detailed steps in finding war records.
