Hello, some people my scrapbooking NG told me about these groups and thought
that I may be able to get some help here. This is what I posted:

For ages now I've wanted to compile a complete family history. I thought
I'd start with my fathers side. My dads father was a WWII casualty from
Minnesota, and he has a memorial in his honour, but I don't have a lot of
information on it. Every time I get so far and then just hit brick walls.
Does anyone know of any free sites where I can go to research family
history. All the sites I find you have to pay for. Please tell me there
are some freebies out there!!
I still have family in MN, but unfortunately we don't speak very often. I
have phoned my aunt/cousin (not sure what she is to me) a couple of times,
and she is ALWAYS so pleased to hear from me, and promises to write etc, and
she has never once called me back, or answered a letter or an email. SO,
I'm thinking that if I'm to get any answers about my family, then I'm gonna
have to research it myself. (And, hopefully save up some money to come to
MN myself to my Grandfathers memorial).

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
TIA,
luv Cec...xxx

I see from a previous post that you are from Newcastle, NSW, Australia.
I checked the Newcastle Regional Library's web site, and it has
Ancestry Library Edition available. You will have to go to the library
to use it, but that is a great place to start your search. They have
the 1930 US census on line, and you should (I hope) find your
grandfather listed. Good luck!

1) What is your grandfather's full name?
2) In what city in Minnesota is the memorial located?

As the other poster suggested, please post the information and we can
try to help you.

wow, thank you so much....

My grandfathers name is Erving Lorence Peterson, and I know that the
memorial is either in Pelican Rapids, Otter Tail County, or Fergus Falls.
(sorry I can't be more specific).
My grandfather was born in 1922 (I don't have his date of birth), and he was
killed in action in the philippines in 1945.
I believe the memorial is called E L Peterson memorial. He was a 2nd
Lieutenant, not sure if that helps.
Thanks in advance,
luv Cec...xxx

I checked Pelican Rapids and it mentions the memorial park on their website.
Just about every town in the US (the world for that matter) has it's own website
nowdays. Here is part of theirs:

According to the U.S. Veterans Cemeteries Database at Ancestry.com,
Erving L. Peterson was born January 2, 1922 and died Feb 5, 1945. He
was a 2nd Lt. in the Army, and his last known address was 7601 34th
Avenue, South Minneapolis , MN 55450. He was interred at Ft. Snelling
National Cemetery, MN on Sept 16, 1948, Section C-24 Site 13539. Here's
a link for the cemetery:
http://www.cem.va.gov/nchp/ftsnelling.htm

Another database at Ancestry.com, U.S. World WarII Enlistment Records,
has the following: Erving L. Peterson, born 1922, Otter Tail,
Minnesota, enlisted on Dec 17, 1941 at Ft. Snelling, MN as a Private.
He had completed 4 years of high school, and was working as a
Meteorologist or Dispatcher Clerk (Crew) (Crew dispatcher, railway.) at
the time of enlistment. He was 69 inches tall, and weighed 158 pounds,
and was single.

Ancestry.com has the 1930 Federal Census online, and this is Erving's
family at that time:

1930 Federal Census, Minnesota, Otter Tail County, Pelican Rapids Village
Year: 1930; Census Place: Pelican Rapids, Otter Tail, Minnesota; Roll:
1111; Page: 10B; Enumeration District: 67;
Peterson, Bernie or Bennie L., Head, 31, married at age 22, born MN,
father born Sweden, mother born Norway, Farmer on a truck farm
Alvina S., wife, 26, married at age 18, born MN, father born Sweden,
mother born Norway
Erving L. son, 8, born MN, parents born MN
Tyler G., son, 6, born MN, parents born MN
Maybelle G., daughter, 11/12, born MN, parents born MN
(ancestry.com has Erving indexed as Emery)

While there is a Bennie Peterson in Otter Tail County in the 1920
Census, there's also a Bennie Lorance Peterson in Clay County, Minnesota
at that time (that's the name given on his WWI Draft registration card).
Bennie Lorance Peterson was born in 1898, and he and his widowed
mother were next door neighbors to the Anderson family, which had a 15
year old daughter named Elvina -- I think this is the right couple to be
Erving's parents and can supply that information (and go back further to
find out his father's name) if you'd like.

Hope that helps,

Cathy

I'm pleased to see that you're making good progress on this. One
resource I didn't see mentioned is the GenWeb sites. They're a
loosely-coordinated group of sites which you can generally find by
searching for [Countryname] GenWeb. For the US, it's
http://usgenweb.com/ Starting there, you can drill down through
various levels of government to get to pages for the locality you're
looking for.

These sites are generally volunteer-run, and the quality and quantity
of information available through them is <ahem> a bit variable. But
many of them will have links to some great information, if the
information isn't there directly.

Another place to start looking is Cyndi's List http://cyndislist.com/
which has, according to their site, 252,100+ links to various genealogy
sites, categorized all kinds of ways.

And a quick hint - your subject line doesn't tell much about your
question. Have a quick read here:

http://www.rootsweb.com/~surnames/goodbad
http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rtfm

They should give you some idea about how to post good questions.

Ditto on letting us know what Cathy sends. I've got some 1900-1930 census
images of Bennie and his adoptive parents and a couple of maybes from
1870-1880. I don't want to send you a bunch of duplicates tho' because
they'll fill up your mailbox pretty quickly. Meanwhile, here's a bunch of
text index entries for various parents, grandparents, cousins, uncles, etc.
They don't take up much space.

Wow, that is great, I would love you to send the images through please. I
don't have any pictures. I just have one picture of my grandfather. I
didn't know that Ben Peterson was adopted. Honestly, I can't thank you all
enough.

What I do know is that Erving was the eldest of three. (Tyler and Maybelle).
He met my Nanna here in Australia while he was posted here in the war. I
don't know much more about that time (I think that was in 1943/44).

Elvina Peterson came to Australia in 1975, (I was born in 1976). Apparently
there was a lot of fundraising to get her out here to see her grandson (my
Dad). She worked at a nursing home, I think it was Samaritans (not sure
sorry), and I'm sure it was in Pelican Rapids.

I did get a lot of the information above out of a book the Myron Broschat
wrote about my grandfather "The Lt Erving Peterson Story". Unfortunately, I
don't have a copy of the book, I borrowed it a few years back from family
when i was researching. I gave up for a while, but I'm sure glad I was
directed to this group. I should've come here years ago!!

Since some others wanted to follow along with what's found, here's a
site for Clay County, MN Vital Records. It's from the Clay County, MN
GenWeb site, and there are links to searchable databases:

http://www.rootsweb.com/~mnclay/vital.htm

The Minnesota state-wide death index does show an Elvina Ingborg
Peterson, who died in 1990 in Otter Tail County, mother's maiden name
Nelson.

The birth and marriage records require you to download a plug-in to be
able to view the results. It's also mentioned that many Clay County
residents were born in the hospital of Fargo, North Dakota (which is
right across the border). Clay County is on the border of Minnesota and
North Dakota, and Otter Tail County is located immediately southeast of
Clay. The GenWeb site for Minnesota has a map of the counties:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~mngenweb/

Good luck,

Cathy

And in order to make your point, you had to waste space and time by
quoting the entire post? She did reply, but at the top, which is what
some people prefer -- granted, it would have been a cleaner post if she
hadn't quoted everything, but then again, you didn't need to quote
everything in order to make your point, either. A post to her
requesting that she trim her replies would have sufficed.
