Hiya
This is a link to that funyny pic I was telling you about.

go to photos section/
then funny Windows messages link
I'm getting a load more, My Windows partition is going crazy! Unfortunetely
need to use it to do some develoopment work for someone. Hard going as the
system keeps leaking memory big time.
seems strange that on my mediocre PII400 326MB RAM, 32MB Elsa graphics card
under Linux I can be running Kmail, knode, konqueror, openoffice, AND
Vmware running Windows 98SE, dreamweaver, access and it is fine!
BUT on Windows native partition I only have to be running 2 apps at the most
and I get memory leaks!
Bloody windows, well I suppose it is only Windows 98SE but I refuse to
upgrade as I use Linux anyhow and only use Windows when I need to use
Windows apps.
(the reason i took vmware off is 'cos I am runing low on disk space, but
will be sorting that out soon. Windows runs better under vmware than it
does natively! )
pah ;p

LOL, that's fantastic. :)

Nothing new there then. :)

If memory leaks are all you are exceptionally lucky.

98SE is the worst OS I've ever used. Anyone who says 98SE is even
relatively ok or stable is taking the piss, or just lying bastards.

Don't buy an IBM HD.
Actually, I think IBM sold off their HD business anyway.
Next time I get a HD I'm going to give Western Digital a try.

WinME is worse. WinXP seems to actually be relatively stable -- I've seen
XP b0x3n with uptimes measured in weeks -- really! It's the stablest
Winblows version, AFAICT, although Linux still has it beat. The only
reason to ever reboot linux is to switch to another OS (multiboot only),
install kernel modules/drivers/major configuration changes, or the power
went out.

'98? I have terrible trouble with memory leaks and that OS. Linux never
seems to be affected so it's not hadware, I guess.

I used to have an identical setup, 'xept it was a K6-II 500.
Same thing, it worked really well. I think the RAM helped a lot, though.

Listen all! Here's someone with guts!
( I'm too addicted to games to wipe my windows partitons )

Ah, well. Xp should be better ccourding to their blurb. Who believes that?
:)

No,no. They've just used windows ME.
Trust me, 98 is great compared to that piece of crap.
It removes kernel modules/drivers, and lets you upgrade them without
rebooting. :) 'Course, you still have to reboot when you recompile the
kernel.
'Tis true, though - I agree XP *is* the stablest Windaz I've seen.

I haven't re-installed since getting XP not long after it came. I'm
happy with that, I don't miss the 3-6 monthly Windows9x re-installs...
at all. I also don't miss IE bringing down the entire system when it
decides to crash for some random reason (that's actually happened btw,
I've just been sitting there, hadn't touched the PC for about 30minutes
and suddenly a window pops up proclaiming IE had crashed ;)).

Bits missing?
XP home is basicly XP pro. But to stop businesses using the cheaper home
edition it has a few things removed. Things essential for business use, but
unnessicary for home users. Such as the ability to log on to a windows
domain or to use a unified network security policy. Its actually possible to
modify XP home using a crack (which microsoft says doesn't exist, but I
tested once :-)) to restore some of the features of pro which were removed
:-)
A similar trick is used to ensure noone uses windows XP professional for a
server, forceing them to buy the even more expensive XP server. Professional
cant handle the vast quantities of RAM used in servers, and has a rather low
connection limit. (obviously these limits apply to home too).

Ugh -- I hope my recent RAM upgrade (to 512M) wasn't a waste. I noticed
it thrashing earlier when the task manager showed a commit charge of 300-
odd M, less than the physical ram; it was dialing up and I noticed quite
a bit of disk activity accompanied by sluggish response from menus in
unrelated apps. Either it was thrashing, or dial-up uses far more CPU at
a far higher priority than seems necessary or reasonable.
Dont worry, thats just XP being slow. Here are the limits:
Windows 95-?
Windows 98-1GB
Windows ME-1GB
Windows NT-?
Windows 2K pro-4GB?
Windows 2k srv-lots
Windows XP home-4GB?
Windows xp srv-lots
Windows XP 64bit- lots and lots
Those sizes are mini and gibi bytes, and "lots" means enough for us to
ignore for a few years yet. Im not sure if 2k pro and XP home are limited to
1GB or 4GB. Im fairly sure its 4GB.
If it is that explains a lot of weirdness.
I have 1 GB Ram. Or had. Win2k pro & 98 refused to boot, Linux worked fine
( but then, it almost always does ).The problem was cured by removing a 512
MB DIMM. I ended up thinking something was wrong with the motherboard. Maybe
t'was that?
Could be, I dont know what happens if you have too much.
Can VMware allocate the hosts virtual memory as physical memory in the
simulated system? Might be a good way to find out.
If my suspicions are true, it won't boot.
Limiting the amount of memory win can use to 700 -odd MB let it work, IIRC.
I'll mess with it a bit more later today, but my machine's probably not such
a reliable test box because it's got Too Much Hardware. come to think of it,
it needs a sound card putting in, too. Time for screwdrivers. Anyone know
how well windows handles multiple soundcards? ( I'm not going to worry about
Linux :))
Windows handles them fairly well, ive got two. You set one as the default
and all apps use that one unless they explicitly ask for the other.
