Subject: rainbow family, organized?
hey....call me stupid...some guy already did earlier today.  i don't
mind so much.  people have been calling me stupid for so long already.
matter of fact, i can't even remember the first time.

but i do remember the first person to ever tell me about rainbow.  her
name is ocean.  she has blood out in virginia beach, and if anybody
knows her lemme know at morestupidthan...@hotmail.com....she's out
there somewheres...

but i've been doing a little more reading.  websurfing actually....and
i've been finding some interesting things.  i've seen hundreds of
kids, and i know there's thousands more.  there's rainbows been going
to gatherings since before there kids were in college, kids having
kids at gathering who were had there in teh first place.  there's kids
hitchhiking to gatherings conceived there many years ago.  so there's
a lot of rainbow.

and one thing i keep reading over & over & over again...is how
everything is so unorganized.....disorganized, sloppy, intentionally
or not...i don't know...and the thing i keep asking myself is why?

first off, for a family so all over the place like it is, there seems
to me to be a hell alot of organization....when i was sleeping under
the bridge in boulder colorado kids were zooming in out from all over
the place and all you had to do to get the latest info was acks
somebody, dig...

day after all the fuss fuss at ocala some kids rolled in hallutin and
hollerin bout what did or didn't go wrong, and the same thing in
arizona....regional gatherings there on the up & up...word gets
around, and i didn't even check my email then....dig...

now i don't know what happened down in ocala and i don't know what
happened down in arizona....i know what i've heard, but i wasn't there
so i can't really say one way or the other....but i'm wondering,
especially from some of the things i've been reading, and some of the
things i've been told, and especially the things i see every day, i'm
wondering

i'm wondering if these things didn't happen because somebody started
yelling at the rangers first thing they walked up and somebody was
rude from the start...i'm saying there may or may not have been food
all over the place and there may or may not have been any bears trying
to eat it...i don't know....

but i've heard nothing but bad things about the authority figures
involved, and i usually do...unless i'm experiencing it first
hand...and then, everything is usually pretty chill.....

and i have had my share of encounters with police folk in which they
come off rude to me from the start, especially me looking full bearded
like a taliban what not unafraid of hair like i am...(in the words of
benji out in boulder, "i am not the taliban, i am a rasta!)..one thing
urks me is police folk coming off rude to me from the start, telling
me it's g.d. illegal to sleep in public...that's one things got to
change....but it ain't unless somebody gets organized....

and if there's one thing i've noticed about alot of the rainbow is
there's one heck of a big group of homeless kids, people living
outside...nothing wrong with it except that in my own country it's
illegal to sleep outside....get that...illegal to do the one thing we
all got to do.

so i'm noticing all these things and wondering how come nobody's
getting organized to change some of these things we all know should be
changed.  from what everybody keeps telling me, everyone keeps saying
how much organization is involved in keeping rainbows away, i don't
see it...but everybody keeps telling me it's there...and maybe it
is....there probably are a few knuckleheads who aren't understanding
enough...especially knuckleheads with guns, which is scary on its own

maybe we're just too lazy to stop complaining about the way things are
to actually get up and do anything about it...i'm saying, all i'm
trying to do is be a law abiding citizen and smoke blundts friday
night in the park with my homies, dig...but i'm willing to do
something about it so i can.

i see a lot of paranoia about what our government is or isn't doing to
get in the way of the rainbow...but one thing i keep remembering from
social studies class is, that government over there.....that's my
government...and i plan on keeping it that way...  and if there's
somebody in it who doesn't want me involved in my government,
well....that dudes just going to have to step aside and give me what's
mine.

It is "Extremely Stupid" to think Rainbow is organized. I mean it's stoners
and anarchists, misfits and ancient hippies come on what do you think?

In my experience many Rainbows consciously oppose organization. They will
sabotage best efforts and in the name of freedom do whatever the fuck they
like. Oy!

As far as cleanup goes--- no shit Rainbow does it right and all the way.
Even the FS knows our excellent record for cleanup.

Organization, we don need no stinkin organization!

I think you're confusing organization with hierarchy.  Hierarchy (leaders)
we (my mouse and me) aint got, but we're (my mouse and me) aces with linear
organizing (cooperation).  Nature of the animal, I think.

In the Rainbow Family there is no formal organization, no hierarchical list
of managers and submanagers, no constitution and bylaws, no president,
secretary, and treasurer.  There is no membership roll and formal
acceptance procedure.  There are no written down rules that people get
punished for transgressing.

But things do get organized, plans are devised and people taking roles in
executing those plans.  There are people who have knowledge and experience
whom others look to for guidance and teaching, and these people make
requests of others and have them follow.  There are people who are
good at enforcing commonly accepted practices with strong voices.  Nothing
would get done if all this didn't happen.

There is leadership and organization, but it occurs mostly spontaneously
and by the mostly unspoken agreement of all who take part in a collective
task.  It is dynamic instead of static.  There are no terms of office, the
leaders are elected every hour.  If they lose the confidence of those who
are following them, they are removed from their position by the followers
turning to other leaders.

It is a place where talent emerges in ways it can't in Babylon, and it is
also a place where incompetence is shown dramatically.  You can't bullshit
people for very long.  When you do earn the respect of others, it is a
truly deserved and solid one.

Just be sure you don't call anybody a "leader" around here, "ogre" is more
popular, and often worn with pride.

if there is none of all that...
how can there be a "long-standing family concensus"
that's probably older than me?
times have changed...
that's for sure.
we've got new blood/energy out there that want to
put in thier input.
some of our family actually do nothing other than
pray for peace in the woods.
instead of calling out terrible names...
maybe we could all talk as a family?
and include those that have never logged in
here into an open discussion.
just a thought?
much lovin' always......

Don't forget the loose cannons, delusional visionaries, wishful thinkers,
wounded warrriors, and generic bliss bunnies.  Not to mention psych nurses and
crisis counselors who are totally bananas.

"Hey, Bub, lemme talk to your supervisor!  I wanna know who's to blame here!"

Come to think of it, the whole thing is impossible.  Free assembly of
individuals, no one in charge?  You gotta be kidding me.  It can't possibly
work.  Whose stupid idea was this, anyway?  Isn't there at least a cruise
director or something?  I demand to see the by-laws immediately!
