Ha anyone else experience color changing in koi. I had a real nice
yellow. He is about 12"long. Last year he had a nice deep yellow color
and now he is almost white. On a happy note my fish all survived
winter in fine fashion except for the change in the color of one. I
had a couple of 3'' fry that I haven't seen yet. Now I wait for the
spawn!
cheers,
tonyf

I only started a Koi pond and will be interested in seeing the answers you
get from this.
Do you have a heater for your pond for the winter?
I live in South of Georgia and people have told me it don't get cold enough
here to hurt the Koi outside.

that is very normal in koi Tony.....even a breeder and shower of koi can't tell
what they will finish out to look like .....In Japan they send the good koi to
a clay mud pond to "finish them" Jerri

I live in Pennsylvania, and my Koi survived the winter (in fact the last 3
winters) even with pond frozen over...they are doing just fine....

I had read that they would change colors. I thought it was only in
their youth. I have had conversation with a fishy friend and reread
the book and somehow I had only remembered only a small portion of
what was said on color. You are totaly right Jerri. I only hope he
gets his yellow color back. It seems that they can change several
times over their life before the colors stays. Maybe that is why the
kio from japan look so good. (the big ones). I bet they love the mud.

There will be some wonderful colors. I don't think they will bloom
this year. They are almost like seedlings. Next year watch out! Yes
the regular food I feed them has color enhancers in it. I have only
been feeding for four days and am just starting to mix a little of the
Romet-B in with the cheerios. They made it through the winter and that
is what is important. I think they will spawn in the nest few days.
The water went from 47° to 65° in four days time. I got the new filter

in place and running just in time. It will take me a while to con
someone into stacking the rock back up.

tonyf

Well I live in northern KY and my fish stay in the pond year round. I
don't think the heater is a good idea.IMHO I do leave a bubbler in the
pond so it doesn't freeze solid.

Koi do change color, sometimes just because. Sometime it's cause by a
stressful event like a move, heron attack, etc. I've had a couple of them,
both quite mature, go all white within a month. I've had a black and white
one which recently starting growing orange spots.

The Japanese have a saying: Only a fool will buy a 3 year old Koi. Only a
fool will sell a 3 year old Koi. Appears the Japanese know something we
don't.
