I have a pool about 5' x 15' x 2' deep, unfiltered and as green as you can
imagine. This is no possibility of filtering this due to architectural
considerations. (Please, no comments!) Lilyponds sells a colorant safe for
fish, etc that turns the water black. I like it! BUT, Lilyponds charges
about $32 for a little jar of the stuff. I do not know the chemical make up
of this dye. There must be a less expensive source from a generic supplier.
This might be ok for smaller pools than I have.

Does anyone have any sugggestions?

TIA

Hiya Stephen!
There are a few folks here that don't use filters, so let's hope they can help
you out a bit more. We don't get wired because someone prefers one method to
antoher...we're just here to share and learn. Do you have plants in the pond?
How many fish? We may not like the green stuff....but the fish love it!
Welcome and please keep us posted! peace....debbie

Hi, Ingredient in this colorant is carbon black. I don't know where to
get it but it sounds cheap. I don't like colored ponds myself but if I
had to use it, the black is much better looking than the blue dyes.

Hi ya,
Thats what they use (carbon black) to colour rubber. It is very messy.
Leaves a residue all over everything it comes in contact with. At work,
they paid to have an entire 2 story building cleaned. Everything had to be
treated as hazardous waste and contained from going down any drains. My
employer, about every 3 years, paid to have the houses next door cleaned and
repainted. Nasty stuff!!! Theres still black residue on the outside of the
building and its been almost 2 years since they stopped using the building
for rubber mixing.

I have not used any of this stuff but someone posted that they use the icing
color that you find in the cake department. (the kind in the bottle with the
white, screw on lid) It is very concentrated, so I don't think you would need
to use much.

I am a beginner pond artist and at the moment do not have a filter.
Do I need one if I want the water to be clear and how much should I
spend on one?? I also need to know where I can get home (Home Depot
maybe?)

Thanks!
Matt

Hi Matt,

My pond is small (218 gals) and I don't use pumps and filters. I just have
lots of oxygenators and other plants. I have 3 shubunkins and 2 s. comets and
some babies(which I don't know yet what they are) There are also lots of
Japanese Black (trapdoor) snails. I think Jerri said maybe ya need 10 gals per
goldfish.

Hi,

I weigh in with Sandra. I also have a smaller pond and don't have any filters
and the water's very clear. There is algae on the inside tho, the fuzzy good
kind. And like Debbie said, you'll need lots of plants. You want to cover the
pond surface to a good degree to cut down on sunlight filtering thru. I keep
the plants up and the fish load down, only two fish but 2 frogs and Lots of
tads, also some of the same snails as she has. Stay away from the apple snails
as they'll eat your plants, and don't forget to get all three kinds (?) of
plants. Have fun!! ;))
