Gosh, this is blast from the past. I gave up on usenet and AGX ages
ago, there just wasn't much point anymore. Signal to noise ratio and
all that.

However...
today I've been made aware of a game called UFO-Extraterrestrials
( http://www.ufo-extraterrestrials.com/ ) and I would like to know
what the old crew (if any of you still hang around here) make of it.
Or inform you of it if it went unnoticed. The initial word is that
it's actually pretty damn good but I'd sure would like to know what
the old crew here at AGX think of it perfore I purchased it. I'm not
made of money, you know. ;)

Not much of either nowadays.

Looks very much like a reworking of the original Microprose UFO with
updated graphics, hard to tell from the website how the gameplay
differs.

I'd be interested too, if there's anyone else out there

I just watched the gameplay videos. This looks quite promising. I wonder
where I could buy a copy?

It's donwloadable now from matrixgames.com. Amazon says it's available
from May 14th onwards.

I think I'll wait for the modding to stabilize.

There's a review on gamespot:
http://uk.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/ufoextraterrestrials/review.html?sid=6170517

it gets 5.2/10 which is not good, but then if you really like the genre it'll be
worth more to you than it was to the reviewer.

Matrix games have good game play from what I've experienced. As for
stability, thats another issue.

I'm playing it right now, it's really good with mods, which there are
tons of already. The top mod is FrankenMod, which is basically a
pack.

Also, if you look on metacritic, which is an index of reviews, it
looks like it's getting around 70%.

Ok have the game.

1 Jun they have released an update which adds some controls that are
absolutly vital, at least for me.

Game seems to be stable enough no crashes and the patch fixes some known
crashes.

To sum up this is basically X-com Defense redone.

That said its actually better than the original, some of the graphics are
better some seem a bit comic.

The biggest changes are the inability to purchase soldiers, scientists and
technicians, they appaerntly show up are certain intervals.

So don't lose your soldiers early on, you'll be horrible handy capped for
the next couple months as your roster fills back up.

I still don't know how you build additional living quarters at seconary
bases so to get more soldiers, ditto for labs and workshops.

Overall if you loved Xcom defense you will love this game, perhaps more than
the original.
