Cleanup of the Saved Variables folder?

"Saved Variables" folder that do not belong to any addons currently
installed. Is it safe to delete these 'leftover' files?

Yes - you can even delete the whole WTF directory with impunity. The
worst you will do is lose all your configs and your addons will lose
history/configs etc. If you delete the whole WTF directory then the
whole game will reset to basics - so screen resolutions etc will need
be reconfigured.... but you wont break the game.

If you are using the Curse Client to get addons there is even a feature
inside it which will let you select savedvariables to delete. It will
also tell you which addons they are "attached" to (although that is
usually obvious from the filename).
PS: Not sure if this feature is only available on the v4 beta version of
the curse client.

I periodically go through and delete anything older than my last game
sign-on. Those files are re-written each time you sign off, if the addons
were in use. So, if they've got older dates, they're from addons you're no
longer using.

I have been curious for quite a long time... what does WTF stand for? I
doubt it is what always comes to mind when I see it... :-)
Similarly, at work I have just finished writing support for our Online
Micro Games, whose folder I obviously named OMG. Takes awhile before
anyone else on the team figured out what the real meaning was...

But deleting your WTF directory is not to be done lightly if you have
anything other than a basic setup.
I'd hate to lose the configurations for my icon bar layouts,
Grid/VuhDo, and especially all my macros (I use a lot because I
multi-box) - between them they represent quite a few hours of work.
To be safe, backup your WTF directory before messing with it.

This is true but you need to make sure that you load all the character
specific addons that you use when you log in. For example, I have a
totem addon that is only loaded for my Shaman and a Druid specific
addon that is only loaded for my Druid.
Why do you want to clean up your saved variables folder anyway? I
don't think that WoW loads them if you don't have the addon loaded so
it shouldn't have a detrimental effect on gameplay. I can see it for
disk space reasons but if you're that tight on disk space then I think
that it wouldn't save enough to be worth it IMO - it wouldn't give you
a great deal of time before you hit problems again.

One reason (for me) is because when I go to "import settings" in some
addons, I show up with choices from characters that haven't existed
for quite a while, it just still has variable settings saved for them
that haven't been cleaned out. That and I'm all about freeing up
space, though I realize these files don't take much room.

Deleting files probably won't fix that - anything shared between characters
on an account is saved in the account level SavedVariables directory as I
understand it. You'll have to either figure out how to delete info via the
addon or hack out sections of the file with a text editor.
Or live with it, which is my suggestion unless the addon gives you a way to
delete.
