What's the difference between these? As far as I can tell, the 'pet'
attacks things (I use it as a sorta tank) and must be fed. I've seen some
fantastic looking 'minions' but never stood around long enough to tell what
they could do for one or what one had to do for it.

Companion pets don't do anything, with few exceptions:
- Some of them have pretty nice animations and idle-emotes.
- Some of them have amusing reactions to certain other companions.
- The Ethereal Soul-Treader will sell you some unique items.
But they don't really "do" anything.
There is a reason they also go by the designation of "vanity pets".

Companion pets are just for looks. They have a few animations, make noises,
but that's it.
Pet is what hunters have. They attack and tank and do different stuff based
on the talents you give them. They must also be fed and kept "happy", and
they can be given a name of your choice. Hunters can tame all sorts of
different pets(some focused on offense, some defense) with a huge variety of
looks and designs. I believe at thise point in time there's over 100
different designs of pets. To summon their pet, the hunter must call it, but
requires no reagent.
Minions are what warlocks and unholy death knights have. Like hunter pets,
they attack and/or tank(to an extent), but they have a set skillbar, each
minion type has it's own set of abilities, and doesn't have talent points.
They also do not require feeding or being kept happy, but their name is
picked randomly the first time you summon one and can't be named by the
player. There are only 5 types of permanent warlock minions(and one of them
is only available to demonology specced locks) and one type of permanent DK
minion, and so any lock/dk you see will have one of those types. To summon a
minion, a warlock has to cast a spell, and 4 out of the 5 minion types
require a soul shard as a reagent for the summoning, the DK minion requires
a spell to summon and also requires either a corpse or the corpse dust
reagent(unless he take the minor glyph of raise dead that removes these
requirements).
You may also occasionally see a pet classified as a "guardian". These are
pets that are summoned by players and help you fight, but are not permanent.
Some of them are granted by talents, some of them by class spells, and some
are granted by items. Examples of this sort are the mage's water elemental,
the shaman's spirit wolves or fire/earth elementals, the DK's gargoyle and
army of the dead, and the druid's treants. An example an item that summons a
guardian is the commander's badge trinket you get for becoming revered with
Netherwing, that lets you summon a netherwhelp to fight for you every 10
minutes.
Thanks muchly..
