I have noticed that a lot of males in this group have a female char.

Why? :)

Most people would probably tell you that if they have to stare at a butt for
x hours per day, it may as well be a female one.

Personally, I have one female toon, my warlock. It was purely a random
choice, as one day I decided to roll a bank alt and didn't know what to
choose... I clicked on 'new' and the game rolled a female gnome warlock with
short green hair and I thought "That'll do". I levelled her up from time to
time over the next 2 1/2 years and now she's lvl 70 :)

Why not?

My rogue is female because the rogue's in Diablo and Diablo 2 are all
female.

My gnome warlock is female as anyone involved with something as evil
as warlockism has to be as cute as possible.

My Night Elf Warrior is female because females are a lot more
threatening than males. ; )

My Draeni Shaman is a female because I wanted to use the name
"Ponytail", and where I got that name from it was used for a female.

My Night Elf Druid is a female as the name came from a female.

My human priest is male because my idea for his name came from a male.

My gnome mage is a male because, hmm, not sure. Possibly the random
name I came up for my mage suited a male better than a female in my
mind.

My dwarf hunter is a male because the name I decided on seemed more
male'ish.

My human paladin is definitely a male as the name I snagged from the
Lone Wolf and Cub manga was a male's name.

My Draeni Priest is a male because the name I felt was more suitable
for a male and I already had a female Draeni.

I have 2 main chars - both female, the main reasons are that the male
chars are so gay/ugly.

My rogue I wanted NE for the extra stealth and the males models are
gay

For my lock - I went for human - and the males were hideous (and the
females cute) - so it was a no brainer.

Why do have a tauren if you are not a tauren? Why do you have an orc if
you are not an orc? Why do you have an undead if you are not an undead?

All my initial toons were male. My wife saw my logon screen one day and
said "why are they all guys?" so my next few were female.

I find that I like looking at females anyway, so why not? :-)

Agreed :-)

I'm not male in RL but I have male characters, just because I think they
suit the character - some gender/class/race combinations just "click" for
me and I make them, regardless of what my own gender is. Of my seven
highest level (so most active) characters, four are male and three female,
so pretty evenly balanced - I don't even consider gender beyond "hey this
gender/race combination would be cool as this class".

I have all male chars as I am a male and I find it terribly confusing when
talking to males with female chars or talking about them.
I mean "Where is Mary" "he is still AFK" how wierd sounds that... and it's
confusing after 2 years of play with the same people.

My main is male human. But all my Alts are females. The only reason my

Do you speak differently with white people and black ? NO
Do you speak differently with female and male? YES
As I said before it does a lot of confusion when speaking with males in
female chars and to me still feels very wierd to call he someone with a
female name, or to say she to a guy....

I started my internet games with 'Myth of Soma' where I remained for about 3
years as 'Rona', a name I still use, both here and on my Warcraft server. I
definitely prefer PvE to PvP and on Soma you can't avoid the PvP. I quickly
learned that the females in Soma suffered less than the males from unwanted
PvP, so that's the direction I headed. It's become sort of a habit now, but
I think it still holds psychological advantages on a PvE server.

When I was a young lad (I'm 64 now - must be one of Warcraft's oldest), I
used to be able to run around saying 'I'm feeling gay today'. Political
Correctness has now robbed me of that delightful word because it has taken
on an entirely different connotation (as have cottage, queen, etc). I wish
youngsters would respect the older generations sensibilities and use more
suitable expressions like 'Sexual Deviant'. I cringe everytime I hear
someone referred to as 'gay'.

Many people just auto-translate it. If someone refers to a female
character as "he", then he talks about the player, if it's "she" then
it's the character. It actually confuses me when a male player plays a
male character (resp. female/female) because then you don't have a
clear answer whether the talks are about the toon or the guy (resp,
the toon or the chick).

Your soft of a boring person aren't you. No dig intended. I mean
this is a fantasy game. Get with the fantasy and roll a female toon.
Have some adventure in your life.

I had a lady ask me if my female warlock wanted to help her out. After
a few days of questing i mention that my succubus looked just like my
wife and she said your a guy and i said yes. She said she was totally
blown away. She'd gotten used to me and we quested more but it was a
shock to her.

If your toon is talking to their toon call them by what they are in
the game. If your talking to them then address them by their sex. I
often refer to my toons as thad did this and thad did that when i'm in
my bank alt. They don't have to guess who i'm talking about. I have
two male toons on the same server with two female toons. I'm a guy. I
have another male on a different server but the same name as my
warlock. In fact they are both alike.

I had this discussion in game lastnight. My main is a male undead
warlock, but my alt is a female blood knight. I think it's because
male blood elves look "gay" to me. I would say the same about male
night elves, except replace "gay" with "retarded," which is why I have
a female night elf warrior on another realm.

We have plenty of people in our guild who are doing the cross-gender
thing, and the way it's handled is to generally refer to the character
rather than the player.

So when I'm playing my pally I'm "she", and with my mage I'm "he".

When "the kids" are calling someone or something "gay" they don't
literally mean homosexual. They've basically nicked the word from
homosexuals and use it to mean "bad", and in my experience they aren't
really consciously even connecting it to sexuality. Mostly.

I'm sure some of the gays will cringe when they are refered to as

In my guild we have two women at 45 and 49. And we all appreciate them
because they are "the glue" between ppl in the guild. :)

Because the character you play in not a reflection of you.

I've heard this silliness before. People say, "Ohh, you have a female char.
you must be gay." and "What! a girl playing a male toon? She must have
penis envy."

If I play a gnome, does that mean I'm very short in real life? If I play an
Orc does that mean I'm ugly?

IT'S NONSENSE.

I've had a grand total of 8 characters since I started playing. 4 were male
and 4 were female. I've been a gnome, a dranie, a troll, an orc, a human
and a blood elf. None of them looked, acted or were like me other the fact
that I was the one playing them.

To experience new things in the game? To have a character of each race/
sex/class? Just for the fun of it?

When I first started playing I steadfastly clung to creating female
character after female character. Even my banking chars were all
female. Then I wanted to try a Paladin, and in my opinion, male BEs
have far more "character" than the females. There's just something
about that haughty and arrogant stance they have, I love their
animations, their jokes, just everything about them. And 56 levels
later, every time he falls and lets out that prissy little "ooh", I
still crack up.

But I admit it confuses me a little when I heal/buff some random Horde
player passing by, and get a "Thank you, sir" in response. And it must
have really confused an overly zealous person I'd grouped with when
the undead warrior also in the group, and with whom I've played
several times, snapped, "Will you slow down already? She has to drink
for her Mana".

I'm female and have all female alts. I think I'll probably stick with that,
but it's because of personal preference, and not because of any
'identification' issues. OTOH, I ~may~, sometime, create a male alt just to
see if it's true that females get help more often. (I certainly have males
rush in to kill the wicked beastie for me when I'm playing, and the more
attractive alts get helped more often.) Maybe this is an unfair
generalization based on one-sided observation.

BUT...the reason I choose females is because of all of the games I've played
in the past 25 years that had a male "lead", only. Gender was almost never
an option. Name, yes. Gender, rarely. (One or two of the Ultima games
allowed for a female Avatar pre Tomb Raider.) The females were most often
followers/sidekicks.

Hmm.

Orc Warlock - male
Orc Hunter - female
Tauren Warrior - male
Tauren Druid - female
Blood Elf Paladin - male
Blood Elf Rogue - female
Undead Mage - Male
Undead Priest - Female
Troll Shaman - female
Troll Mage (bank alt) - male

Don't see much bias there.

I understand what you mean. I have a female dwarf hunter who at one got
quite annoyed at a beggar in Iron Forge. Well once thing lead to another
and I found out what happened is that he claimed that his account had
been "hacked" and that he had no equipment or gold. Upon further questioning
I determined that he had joined a guild that insisted that he provide them
with his userid and password.

So I simply told him to do a few simple things
1. Change his password ASAP.
2. Send a ticket to a GM explaining what happened.
3. Never give his password to anyone else again.

I also put him on my friends list so I'd know when he next logged on.
When I saw him next, I asked how things were. He was quite happy that the
GM was able to fix him up. I then reminded him to never give his password
to anyone again.

His reply:

Yes Ma'am

Took me a bit of parsing before I realized I had never in any of our
communications indicated my real life gender.

Also the Valentine oriented event was kind of freaky for me. Do I give cards
to the cute looking female NPCs and make my character look gay? Or do I give
them to the male NPCs even though I'm a male in real life. Either way wasn't
the most comfortable thing.

Probably true.

I chose the looks of my female characters to not be
hawt. Ie, gnome with white hair, no stupid ponytails,
and the oldest looking face I could get for roleplaying
purposes; undead with no nose or lips; and a human with
short cropped white hair (sensible for a warrior) and
a scowling face. The latter recently had a guildie
say "why'd you make her so ugly?" and also got a
creepy tell from someone who inferred a particular
sexuality.

I played Might and Magic for years and the lead dude was a guy.
Everytime. I could have rolled a female warrior but not as strong as
a guy. Its nice to know in this game the male is not any stronger
than a woman.

Maybe blizz could make the males a bit stronger but give the felmales
more healing power or something to offset the male attributes.

Like in real life the male is traditional'y stronger but the female
has the keys to the kitchen and bedroom.

Automatically give female races +10 to tailoring and cooking. Make
them immune to succubus seduction (even if they're bisexual). Less
strength, less stamina, more agility, more spirit. Equal intellect
(I'm not even going to go there). Give them a "flirt" or "girl talk"
power on hostile humanoids, kind of like a rogue's pickpocket. Give
them a berserk buff (enhanced damage) once a month. What else?

*LOL!*

That berserk buff needs to last 1-3 days... And *Girl Talk/Flirt* will be
some sort of a stun ability. Also women can multitask, so they need an
ability to cast several different spells in one time. :)

Well, They're 10%ish of a total population, considering everyone knows
his/her sexual preference (or dares act upon it). So towards the rest
(90% falling for the other gender) they're a minority. They deviate
from 'normal' quite a bit. That is, given that normal is 90% of the
population. The 'normal' also is the majority by the way. So in
mathematical terms being deviate in sexual preference (or sexual
devaint, which actually has a nice ring :) ) is just what it is.

I never wanted to be normal, so I'd almost wished I loved the same
gender :)

WheeZ50 (being deviant isn't being 'abnormal' and least of all should
be taken negatively)

I don't see the blood elves as being evil, as such, more
"civilization balanced on the edge of the abyss". Their

A lot of the male models look pretty bad, yeah. Dwarf and gnome men

We had a Human female rogue in our guild who had an obviously (contemporary)
female name. She was on Ventrilo for all raids, but never talked as she had
(according to another guildie) a really bad accent... which was odd because
she typed very quickly and with perfect grammar, spelling, punctuation and
capitalisation. Turns out she was a he and had no accent at all.

There are social circles where that's pretty close to a
sexual advance, though it's more typically "nice boots!".

you meant that you say he/she corresponding to their sex, then it was a
misunderstanding, and in that case I apologise.

But you're talking to the character, so you're not saying "she" to the guy.
Try and think of it like that. When "she" talks back, just imagine she has
a sore throat.

Remove the ability for males to ask guards for directions. Since they
never do it why program it in?

I usually skirt around the issue by avoiding gender references in those cases:
"Where's Mary?"
"Still AFK" or "Mary's still AFK"

:-)

I'm a (straight) male with a female main, and I don't mind if people use the
male of female pronoun when referring to me in game.

When it comes to things like the Valentine's Day things that other people have
mentioned, I just take the role-playing route and flirt with the males.

Similarly I have no problem when guildies & party members (either male or
female) /flirt /hugor /kiss Zil. Sometimes I have no idea what real-life
gender the player behind the toon is - the sexy female mage blowing my priest a
kiss after getting a res might be controlled by a fat hairy 40-year-old man for
all I know, but it's only a game, so I just /kiss them back.

In a way I just love the anonymity of the whole thing - you get to know the
personality, not the person.

I think it was thadrixorf that wrote something like...

In Might and Magic 1, I always made the party all female as there was
one town that if you went in with male's, you'd get thrown in the
dungeon. No way to fight it or anything, just *bam*, you're in the
dungeon, gotta fight your way out. Made it really hard to get to the
npc's of the town if you weren't all female. There was a place to
goto though which would turn any characters you wanted into females.
(and another place to turn them male again, but as there was no
advantage to being a male that I could recall so no reason to bother
doing so)

Of course, I tended to name all the characters after their class. So
"Knight", "Archer", "Priest", etc. Made it easier to keep track of
which was what. : )

With best regards, Shammy.

I guess it could be avoided by saying always the name but my usual
conversation goes like:

me: where is Mari
other person: Dont know
me: is she comming?
me again: I mean he...

I always feel the need to correct myself when talking about males in female
chars... just confusing :p

I tried that a while ago, and boy did it make the game harder to play!
I really missed being able to look around, behind or to the side.

I suppose it might be more realistic, but I hated it.

This is a GAME. Its not real life. Actually its a fantasy GAME and
its roleplaying. I call everyone by their toon names and address
everyone that way. No she or he. When i'm playing my rogue and am
refering to my warlock i say Thad send me this and that.

I really believe its just you. Maybe you'd be happier playing another
game .

One of the forthcoming patches will include voice chat in some form
so you can use a microphone to talk to other players.

Sexual Deviant? I'm not sure how younger generations are expected to
respect your sensibilities when it appears you have none.

Also, anyone with a high school education should know the difference between
feeling gay and being gay. If someone said "I'm feeling gay today," I would
know exactly what they meant and I'm only 26. If a moron assumes such a
statement refers to the speaker's sexual orientation they are just that, a
moron. Using that definition in that statement makes absolutely no sense.
It would be like someone saying "I'm feeling white today," or "I'm feeling
rather Buddhist today." It is beyond silly.

Furthermore I have no idea why you believe political correction robbed you
of that word. It seems to me that homophobic jackasses robbed you of the
word. They are the ones that would assume you are referring to sexuality
rather than a good mood. Those of us that actually grew up at some point in
our lives realize that the color of a person's skin, their religion,
ethnicity, sexual orientation, etc. doesn't matter would probably understand
what you meant.
