Recently I've been enjoying my lowbie (32) priest, a class that is totally
new for me. My sponsor character has collected quite a few Stone Keeper's
Shards already so I can by another heirloom and my dilemma is: Grand Staff
of Jordan (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=44095) or The Blessed Hammer of
Grace (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=44094).
Currently I'm shadow but in dungeons I am actually assigned the healer role
a lot more often than DPS (would be something like 70:30; also, funny
thing, I have no slightest problems with healing, but when DPS'ing I'm
usually quite far behind other DPS'ers). When at levels x6-x9, I love to go
and level through BG's and there I'm usually around the top of the chart as
a DPS'er. At lvl40 I'll consider adding holy spec for healing.
So, knowing all the above, which of these two heirlooms do I want and why?
(As I see it, it's basically about choosing between mana+OH and hit+stam,
but I have no clue which will be more universal and beneficial for me in
the long run).
Thanks in advance,

Go for the hammer. The mana regen will be handy for both healing and DPS
whereas the hit rating will be useless when healing.
As far as I can see, the staff is for dps and the mace has regen so
could be considered a healing item. However, you'll constantly need to
upgrade your offhand, which to me is a bit of a pain. My mage enjoys
the staff.
Also, regarding dps at your level, it's true a shadow priest isn't
going to perform nearly as well as say a hunter. Could I suggest you
look at going holy dps? I found it very good, and especially with the
smite glyph (20% extra damage when holy fire active I think). In fact,
I think it's widely acknowledged that holy dps is better than shadow
until about the 50s.
Both items have the same spell power, so will increase your damage /
healing by the same amount, but the staff, with it's extra hit, is
itemized more for DPS casters (e.g. shadow priests), since you don't
need hit rating when you heal.
The mace is designed for healers, since it has mana regen instead of
hit. Since it's a one-hand, it also allows an offhand item, to
further increase your spell power / stats.
If you're primarily healing, you'll want the mace; the staff
otherwise.
I'd get both, but I have tons of those shards.
Go for the other staff for 65 Heroic emblems. Much better weapon and
really better for a priest. I got one for my spriest today

I like this answer the best.
Go with the mace and get an off-hand to further increase whatever you
feel you need. The staff is nice, but the mace and off-hand item should
beat the staff easy. My lvl 80 shadow priest hasn't had a staff in 30
levels or more. She's always had a dagger or mace, and an off-hand item.
She did pick up a cheap fast staff for a short time to level her skill
for the Master of Arms achievement.
As a lower level shadow priest you can probably do a good job healing,
but this seemed to drop off for me as I leveled, that could just be me
though I think I'm an adequate player. My priest is PvP geared.
Discipline, Shadow, or Holy, I would go with the mace and an off hand.
The off-hands come in many varieties, check this before you pick the
staff or the mace.

Got it for both my druid and priest, and using it for both healing and
dps (druid is lvl 65 moonkin/resto)
Thinking about dual-spec my shammy too and use it for healing, instead
of just being enhancement.
I picked the cloth heirloom sholders too, to shift between druid and
mage, plus the dps caster trinket.

Your spec doesn't really matter till you're past lvl 50, and even at lvl
60 you can heal as well as a holy/disc priest if you're top preforming
or better equipped.
Remember haste is extreamly bennificial now for shadow priests, and will
make you heal better too.
Haste makes your dots tick faster, thus you make more damage, and it
will also let you cast every non-instant spell faster.
I know you won't get much items with thos right specs at your level, but
don't be shy trying out stuff, all you might loose is a few hours
play-time and it's well paid for some experience.

Again, thanks for all the replies and advice in the thread. I eventually
went with the mace. So far, I haven't felt this mp5 doing wonders, but I
like the idea of being able to modify my power with an OH. Hit rating is
always welcome, of course, but as one of my friends said, "you'll start
worrying about it when you're 80".
As for the other staff for emblems, grinding hc's for emblems has got too
boring for me even to gear up my 80's so harnassing them to provide for
lowbies is rather out of the question. :)
And as for going holy DPS, too much bother for me at this point, but I
think I'll try and see how it works as soon as I hit 40 and get a second
spec.
Happy New Year!

Looks like I was in late, but my advice would have definitely been for
the staff for one reason: reuseability. A staff allows you use of the
same Heirloom for a priest, warlock, mage, caster druid, and caster
shammy.
I have the staff, + the cloth xp boost shoulders and chest. They're
on my Warlock at the moment but I full intend to pass them down to my
priest, druid, and shammy once the lock hits 80 (my mage is my main
and so she doesn't need them).
If you've got lots more Stone Keepers Shards than me then this might
not be as important, but I run few enough dungeons that I'm limited as
to who can get what :).
I truly wish though that they made it so that shards and emblems were
account-wide rather than toon specific.

Yes, I thought about it, too. But I also thought I'd worry about other
chars later -- in an extended period of time these shards won't be a great
bother.

Currently I'm broke on the shards. :) Also, I tend to get them from WG
quests rather than dungeons. Not sure if it's quicker but PvP is one of few
aspects of the game that hasn't got boring for me.

I'd rather have heirlooms _really_ _bound_ _to_ _account_, by which I mean
for them to be transferrable cross-realm and cross-faction, and not across
a part of your account only. In-game post system limitations could be
easily got round by allowing heirlooms to be managed via Web, or so I
think.

Umm, they are cross faction now. Still can't send them cross-realm, but you
can send them to your other faction characters.

I didn't know this! Thanks!
Yeah, I wish this too. Gotta figure out which toons have how many
badges, and get a lot built up on a toon that doesn't need them...
Like my Stone Keeper's shards from WG on my Prot Warrior (single
spec). Or having all my badges on my highest geared toon when my
lowest geared 80 needs them most (but got some nice ilevel 245
shoulders in 1 weekend of random heroics...)
When you get to lvl 80 get the non pvp items. much better for pve
unles your lvling in pvp.
I also got mail for my lvl 73 hunter which can be used for my lvl 12
shammy. Not bad.

Just how do you go about doing this

Go to the mailbox.
Type the name of your cross-faction alt on the same server.
Put the Heirloom item in the message.
Click Send.
In other words, exactly like you would send any message.

The same way you mail items to anyone else? Go to a mailbox, type the name
of the character you wish to send the item to, put the item in the slot,
click send?
