I understand the LFG tool matches people by gear level. What if I've got my
"in town" gear (suit or dress) on? Does it check gear in my bags?

no. it will tell you you can't queue until you get better gear.

I'm not sure what the system uses. my fresh DK that I bought AH blues
to just enough to get him into the queue was immediately dumped in
Halls of Lightning, then Old Kingdom, then Halls of Stone...

and I'm like "Really?"

I think it was Blackheart - US - PvP <blackhear...@yahoo.com>
that wrote something like...

Just got dumped into heroic Hall of Reflection on my pally. Was in my
tanking gear with an average item level of 175. My healing gears
average item level was almost 200, so maybe it looks at all the gear
you're carrying with you?

Even that might be an issue if your off-set is crappy and it takes the
average. Hopefully it takes the max of soulbound items.

That wouldn't be a great solution either. Suppose you are dual specced
so sign up for healing and dps, your dps gear is really good but your
healing gear is rubbish. You'd stand a good chance of being placed as a
healer in an instance that you can't heal. It would also be the same if
you wanted to sign up for any role where that isn't the role that your
best gear set is for.

I think that it should take the gear that your wearing when you join the
queue. That would work for anyone who wants to queue up for one role in
gear that isn't their best (and still work for those that do want to
sign up for a role with their best gear)

It would be quite tricky to take into account multiple roles properly.
Maybe they could tie it in to the equipment manager so you select your
gear set for each role that you tick in the dungeon finder.

How does it take BoA gear into the equation, because it's always an
ilevel of 1, so if you have 3 pieces of BoA gear, it can really screw
your gear score (at least in the addon I use it does). So you can be
geared better than it thinks you are? Or does the LFG go by an
proprietary "Blizzard Super Secret" formula that assigns more
appropriate values to BoA?
I'd love it if they could make the BoA ilevel scale like all the other
stats on them do...

I don't know how it does it, but a smarter sort of "gear score" would be
the weighted values on stats that Wowhead.com uses in its item comparison
tool. (These two are often suspect, but they're better than straigh iLVL
comparisons, which are nearly useless outside of fights like Flame
Leviathan.)
