What I want to know what is the best spell rotation for the max
DPS/Dmg with a Gorilla as a pet.
Thanks
Well BM is pretty boring. I use it only for PvE or when I need my pet
to tank elites. Shot rotation is simple:
Serpent sting
Arcane shot
Multi SHot
Spam Steady Shot until Arcane/Multi are off cooldown. Refresh Serpent
when needed.
SV on the other hand is the best DPS spec and it's quite fun.
Explosive is your most DPS shot so be sure to use it any time it's
available.
(Kill shot if applicable)
Explosive Shot
Black Arrow
Serpent Sting
Multi Shot
Spam Steady Shot until Explosive/Multi are off cooldown.
take all three ranks of Sniper training and be sure to have it up
before you start shooting.
Best SV spec:
http://www.warcrafthuntersunion.com/2009/01/suvival-hunter-raid-talent-build/
Before any fight of course put up Hunter's mark - misdirect on
pet/send pet to attack etc
Ehm, I always hear people calling BM "boring"... You just summed up the
questionmarks that are always pop up in my head when I hear people say
that...
It's pretty much the same when you compare the three main specs:
BM: spam steady unless Arcane / Multi is available (keep SeS up).
SV: Spam steady unless Explosive / Black Arrow / Multi is available
(keep SeS up).
MM: Spam Steady unless Chimera / Aimed shot / Silencing Shot is
available (Chimera keeps SeS up)
It's a difference of one spell between SV and BM, while MM is, in a way,
even more boring.
And the advantage of BM is that your pet is actually doing something
useful. If I go and do quests as Marksman, all my pet does is chase the
mobs running after me. It can't keep agro even if I just do Steady Shot!
True, I can 2 or 3 shot most of the stuff coming at me, but it makes for
alot less relaxing questing, coz running away from mobs is not my idea
of a good time ;-)
Of course, the main thing is about you having fun, playing the spec you
like most. But objectively speaking, BM rules solo playing, without a
doubt. Grab yourself a Rhino for coolness sake, and enjoy it grabbing
agro of anything that comes your way.

That's what I meant.
Let's face it: solo play in WoW (as in every MMORPG) gets boring real
fast. Killing 20x[random mob] is boring. Even more so in BM, because:
- fights last longer
- your pet does most of the fighting
- nothing ever changes: shot rotation is short and simple, no procs,
low crits, etc.
Sure, I enjoyed the safe fighting of BM till I was about lv50 (my
crokolisk could hold aggro from three different mobs), but after that
I had to switch to SV. Pulling some aggro can actually be fun: freeze
a mob and trigger Lock'n'Load, put them to sleep with Wiyvern sting.
Not to mention the crits! In dungeons I crit around 40%.
What has BM to offer? You grow big and red for some seconds?
> It's pretty much the same when you compare the three main specs:
>
> BM: spam steady unless Arcane / Multi is available (keep SeS up).

Well, with Survival, you have to watch for Lock and Load procs as well. When
Lock and Load procs, your Explosive Shot a)costs no mana and c)has no
cooldown, so even if it's not normally time for an Explosive Shot, you now
get two of them, altering your rotation. Additionally, rather than fire them
back to back, you have to wait half a second between shots so that the dot
of the first one isn't overwritten by the second one.
Well, my BM solo DPS is the same (ok similar) whether I'm in BM or in MM
spec (or SV, I did try that for a little while) so fights didn't last
longer. Yes, my pet does a larger share of my DPS (30% when soloing) so
I get smaller crits. But what do my crits matter, if my DPS is still the
same? About crit percentages; they're really crazy... I'm at 46.9% crit
as BM, 51.66% as MM. And yeah that's unbuffed :-)

Anyway, like I said, anyone is allowed their personal preference. I
actually like having a pet that helps me do my chores ;-)

My hunter recently dual spec'd, but he has been BM for 80 levels, and I
still get people in PUGs asking him to dismiss his pet... before
anything happens.
That's right: before we even kill a single foe, my hunter is being
asked to put his pet away - apparently because they don't trust him to
not let his pet go crazy.
It's so insulting! They don't even know me, so why do they assume I
don't know how to manage my pet?
A BM hunter's pet is responsible for up to 1/3 of the damage he does -
why ask me to gimp myself so severely on first acquaintance? Do you
want me to actually help, or what!?
It's like me asking a mage I don't even know to not use their fire
spells. GIVE ME A BREAK.
Anyway, I dualed, and took survival as my second. I decided to perfect
his survival spec for dungeons, and keep BM for soloing and farming n stuff.
I ran out to try my new survival skills on the mammoths I usually farm
for leather and meat. Holy cow, what a difference! I was taking down
mammoths in 3 shots, instead of taking 15-20 seconds to down them.
Explosive shot is da shit! Yeah, that was impressive.

You just said a cotton-pickin mouthful. The advantage of BM is the
robust pet.
I sometimes wonder at people who discount the importance of the BM pet.
Don't they realize for a BM the pet is a primary weapon and shield?
Don't tell a BM to dismiss their pet. That is like telling the hunter
to fight without a gun or bow. Idiotic.
They just plain don't get it.
> I sometimes wonder at people who discount the importance of the BM pet.
> Don't they realize for a BM the pet is a primary weapon and shield?
Huh, odd. I've never been asked to dismiss my felguard as a demo lock, and
he serves essentially the same role as a BM pet does. I've been asked to
disable his taunt, but never to dismiss him.
> Don't tell a BM to dismiss their pet. That is like telling the hunter to

Perhaps a lot of them DO get it, they just don't trust people to manage
their pets properly. I confess, I've seen some hunters whose pet ends up
doing something it shouldn't do(never bad enough to cause a wipe, but still
enough to be an annoyance) though I've never seen one asked to dismiss their
pet either(usually just a "hunter control your pet please", albeit sometimes
with more colorful language).
See what I mean?

Oh yeah like the tank never does anything he/she shouldn't do! LOL
> Perhaps a lot of them DO get it, they just don't trust people to manage

Yeah, except they don't even know me, nothing has happened yet, and they
have the audacity to ask me to put away my pet.
Put away your shield, put away your wand, put away your off-hand weapon,
assholes.
I was on BM until level 70 in TBC days... Recently I decided to get
him up and running and got him Dual specced to MM and BM at first...
While I loved the great usrvivability of BM but IMO MM was the most
fun. Although I let me pet go first before before i do anything
because when I start the mob will not get off me until it dies.
The crit chances and crit bonus that MM give is great. Watching those
high numbers gives me a thrill. And mobs die way faster than in BM.
I recently tried SV... Looks good but takes a while to get used to
it... I'm addicted to MM... The funny thing is that I clocked 1.9k dps
in Violet Hold normal at level 76. While my level 80 Mage barely goes
above 2.5k with raid buffs. So I just wonder how much dps my hunter
will clock when at level 80...

Err, well, no. Being asked to disable his taunt is rather different than
being asked to dismiss the pet.
> Oh yeah like the tank never does anything he/she shouldn't do! LOL
Well yes, they do...but they also don't typically break off combat to go
aggro some mob nowhere near the fighting, as I've seen hunter pets do.

While I don't recall seeing it happen personally, I believe some
people will ask hunters to dismiss their pets because the pet's block
their view. Some of the big winged, flying monstrosities can make it
hard for melee to see where they are and where the mobs they're
supposed to be fighting are. Bit hard to make sure you're behind the
mob when you can't see them *or* yourself. ; )
(doable though, so not something I think is really worth losing the
pet's dps over generally)

This is strange. There's people actually studying this kind of things

Yes I know. ::rolling eyes heavenward:: I never said it wasn't.

::shrug:: I have seen players do absolutely any boneheaded thing that
can be named. But my pet doesn't.

That was never the case with me.
I agree some pets are annoyingly large, but if you are playing a Gnome
any pet or person will block your view.
I have several pets, most hunters do. You aren't stuck using the same
one at all times and in all situations.

What's strange about that?
You aint seen nothing yet :-) I visit these forums alot:
http://elitistjerks.com/f74/
A big help is this spreadsheet:
http://elitistjerks.com/f74/t30710-wotlk_dps_spreadsheet/
The funny thing is, even now, BM remains competitive, believe it or not.
Only in situations where my pet can't do optimum DPS, or alot of AoE is
involved, MM or SV leap away from BM.
Check this out.
MM spec, rotation:
Hunter DPS 6989
Pet DPS 1121
Total DPS 8110
SV spec, rotation:
Hunter DPS 6781
Pet DPS 1224
Total DPS 8005
BM spec, rotation:
(don't forget the extra 4 talent points for the pet!!)
Hunter DPS 4762
Pet DPS 3080
Total DPS 7842
I used my normal MM gear for this comparison, swapping Broach of the
Wailing Night with the Sparkling Onyxia Tooth Pendant in BM and SV specs.
My gear is, of course, tuned for MM. If I'd swap a few pieces, SV would
be at least on par with MM.
So, MM and SV both beat BM, but you'll have to agree BM DPS is still
pretty respectable...
Then perhaps you better clarify, as I said I've been asked to disable my
pet's taunt, and you responded "see what I mean?" as if that's comparable to
being asked to dismiss your pet.
> ::shrug:: I have seen players do absolutely any boneheaded thing that can
> be named. But my pet doesn't.
The only player I've seen do anything remotely similar to the example I
mentioned that I've seen multiple times with hunter pets(and sometimes with
lock and Dk pets too) got a vote kick after the first pull.

the final talent of the BM tree will let you add 4 more talent points
to each of your pets' trees.
Nothing. I found strange tha Thomas was having same DPS with any spec.
I guess that at lv80 differences are minimal, though for some players
those 100dps do make a difference.

The only reason I do random runs in H's is to get badges. If I'm
asked to remove my pet then i remove it. Its really simple. IF we
wipe cause i do not have a pet then i will mention that we could do
better with a pet.
The only pet I have used in a H is my imp on my lock. I have never
been asked to remove the imp. I have been asked in Naxx to phase it
out on one fight. Once again its not a problem.
You know it takes a team to take down the mobs in H instances.

Yeah, if I was asked to dismiss my felguard I would dismiss it, but I would
point out that a)doing so will cut my DPS by roughly 25% and b)prevent any
casters in my party from having a near constant 300+ spellpower buff.
> The only pet I have used in a H is my imp on my lock.
I pretty much always run my lock in demo these days(the buffs to demo and
the semi-nerf to conflagrate basically removed the reason I liked to
occasionally switch to destro), so I got the felguard out. A lot of people
actually appreciate it sp buff.
> I have never been asked to remove the imp. I have been asked in Naxx to

Yeah, same.
My lock is dual spec'd and right now both are dest spec. One has the
life tap glyph and the other does not. I would like to try out the
demo but do not really know where to start or what spell rotation to
use. My lock is full T9 set for both bonus's.
> My lock is dual spec'd and right now both are dest spec. One has the

What glyph did you give up for the lifetap one, ooc?
> I would like to try out the demo but do not really know where to start or

Demo is a little more complex than destro, more proc based. Basically,
rotation is:
CoE(if you don't have a boomkin, unholy dk, or destro lock already providing
the 13% spell damage buff) otherwise CoD if the fight will last over a
minute. Then Corruption, Immolate, and follow with Shadow Bolt spam,
refreshing Immo and especially Corruption as required. Whenever Molten Core
procs, switch from SBolt to Incinerate for the 3 casts MC allows. And once
Decimation procs when the target is 35% health or lower, spam Soul Fire. Use
Demonic Empowerment every chance you get, and pop Metamorphosis anytime you
can unless you KNOW you have a boss fight coming up before Meta's CD will
expire. If you have Meta up and can safely get in melee range when killing
groups, do so and use Immolation Aura in addition to your standard AoE(this
is also a good strategy if a boss summons non-elite adds, and can even be
useful in special circumstances...ie, if the vampire dude in OK grabs you,
you can't attack him, but if he does it while Immo Aura is up, it's ticks
will still deal damage to him). Use Spellstone on your weapon, and for
glyphs:Felguard, Quick Decay, and Lifetap are considered the standard.
My lock has basically the "standard" demo build except I have 3/3 Fel
Vitality and 1/2 Master Summoner, the standard is 2/3 and 2/2. My pet
doesn't need resummoning very often, so the constant demon boost(and thus,
boost to my own SP) from the extra point in Fel Vitality is more useful to
me.
http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Nesingwary&n=Necromortis
> My lock is full T9 set for both bonus's.
Mine has t9 gloves, and will be getting the pants soon. Most of his other
gear is 245 badge and crafted gear and a smattering of other stuff.
Yep, you mustn't forget to add them to your pet's talent-tree in the pet
tab of the Hunter spreadsheet, or your pet's DPS will be much lower...
This is my lock
http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Cenarius&n=Thadrixorf
I'll give that spec a go. You know my lock does a good steady 3.5k to
4.5k dps on boss fights but my mage does up to 7k. I just cant'
figure out what i'm doing wrong. Sometimes my spells don't go off
when i press the keys and this is a brand new keyboard. No problem
with the mage.
Anyway I gave up the incinerate glyph. I think I actually do more dmg
wtihout the life tap glyph as I dont' always keep it up and my spirit
isn't that high. I get abut 120 extra sp with that. I have the
resurgance and crystal shard trinkets. I'm about 78 over hit capped
but it doesn't bother me at this time.
When i use the two trinkets together my dps is insane. I also have
lightweave embroidery on my back armor. I think I will enjoy playing
the the demo lock in H instances for a bit. Its something different.
> I'll give that spec a go. You know my lock does a good steady 3.5k to
> 4.5k dps on boss fights but my mage does up to 7k.
I don't raid, but in heroics, my DPS is around the same as yours
there(peaking at 5.6k during one Bloodlust).
> I just cant' figure out what i'm doing wrong. Sometimes my spells don't
> go off when i press the keys and this is a brand new keyboard.
I don't have that problem normally, though there always is a slight delay
between when my Immolate hits and when I'm able to actually cast
Conflagrate.
> Anyway I gave up the incinerate glyph. I think I actually do more dmg
> wtihout the life tap glyph as I dont' always keep it up and my spirit

Yeah, my spirit is around 400, so I imagine the 80 sp wouldn't be as useful
overall as the 5% constant boost from Incinerate.
> I get abut 120 extra sp with that. I have the
> resurgance and crystal shard trinkets. I'm about 78 over hit capped

I'm like 22 under cap, but I don't raid. If I decide to, I'll just replace
an existing gem with a 20 HR one and be okay. Aside from that, with Fel
Armor up and Spellstone on my weapon, I've got around 3100 sp, 711 haste,
and 29% crit, seems to work well for me.
> When i use the two trinkets together my dps is insane. I also have

Yeah, I got Lightweave on mine as well.
> I think I will enjoy playing the the demo lock in H instances for a bit.

I like it, it's a lot of fun. You get a cool pet(I like my imp and all, but
come on, little bitty imp vs a big, horned, armored, axe wielding beast?),
you get the big numbers of destro(during a H VH run, I had Molten Core and
Decimation proc at the same time...all 3 Soulfires crit. 18k, 22k, 20k),
your gotta keep more dots up than destro but less than Aff... One thing
though, because of the proc based rotation, you may wanna use some kinda
addon(I hear Powerauras works) to alert you when Molten Core and Decimation
go off.
I use Miks Scrolling Battle Text but I also have one called Need to
Know. I put my spells i want to keep track of like immolate, life tap
and a few others.
I tried aff today just to try it out and the haunt keeps corruption up
all the time but still I do not like it. Next I try the demo. In
demo you get a ton of haste on the spellstone. My sp is only around
2700 buffed so not that great. When i raid I just use the destro
spec. Althought it would be nice to have an insane haste from demo.
I'll try that one tomorrow.
> I use Miks Scrolling Battle Text but I also have one called Need to

I'd mainly like one to alert me when Molten Core and Decimation proc. I
usually notice em, but it'd be nice not to have to be watching the buff bar
as well as the fight.
> I tried aff today just to try it out and the haunt keeps corruption up
> all the time but still I do not like it.
I don't like it much either.
> Next I try the demo. In demo you get a ton of haste on the spellstone.
Yeah, 260 I believe.
> My sp is only around 2700 buffed so not that great.
It'll be higher in Demo. Demo locks have the talent Demonic Knowledge that
grant them SP equal to a percentage of their pets stam+int. And with Demonic
Pact, anytime your pet crits, you(and your party/raid, if you're grouped)
get a temporary boost equal to 10% of your SP...and with a felguard and a
reasonable crit rating, that buff will be up most of the time. That's a near
constant 270 sp boost not even counting the higher SP you'll have from
Demonic Knowledge.
tell me once again the best spell rotation for demo with a felguard on
a boss and on trash.
Against a target dummy I still do better with my dest but i'm really
used to it.
> tell me once again the best spell rotation for demo with a felguard on
> a boss and on trash.
On trash, just pop Meta and AoE it down(with Rain of Fire, and if you can
safely go into melee range, Immolation Aura) if there's mobs, Shadowbolt for
single targets. Use Demonic Empowerment to boost your pet's damage every
chance you get(assuming you get 3/3 Nemesis it has a 42 second CD so you can
generally only use it once per pull, though on long boss fights you can use
it more than once).
For bosses, it goes:
CoE(if you don't have a boomkin, unholy dk, or destro lock already providing
the 13% spell damage buff) otherwise CoD if the fight will last over a
minute. Then Corruption, Immolate, and follow with Shadowbolt spam,
refreshing Immo and especially Corruption as required. Whenever Molten Core

can. If you have Meta up and can safely get in melee range when killing

Well, keep in mind, target dummies can't proc Decimation, which is your
Execute, and is a HUGE boost to DPS as Soulfire is extremely hard hitting,
even moreso if Molten Core is up.
Wow that is more to remember than my dest. I'll give it a go though.

Hehe good good :-) It makes a world of difference. I'm not using an
exotic pet (for DPS anyway) but the 4 extra points make an incredible
difference in my pet's DPS.

Its basically to make sure that the 51 point BM talent is entirely useless
other than to get a cosmetic pet. You compare "oooh, i can get an exotic
pet" with Chimera Shot or whatever nonsense SV hunters get, and BM hunters
would feel pretty left out. (Not that they aren't anyway, after what
Blizzard has done to their DPS potential. But I digress...)

Sounds like I shouldn't bother playing my hunter, who's been parked for
several months now as a level 80 Dalaran mule. (As an engineer she can use
the AH there.)
If you don't enjoy playing a hunter, don't... But in the raids I've been
going to, Hunters have been at the top of the pack pretty regularly. My
gear is less good than most of my guildies, but I manage to op DPS
regularly.
