Probably he was just bored and wanted to see how you would react.
And he may not really have been helping you; perhaps his goal was to reduce
your experience gained. You earn less experience when someone out-of-party
helps you kill mobs, and you earn a *lot* less if the mobs are grey to
them, which it sounds like they were.

He could have just been nice and killing time or he could have been keeping
you there until some level 19ish friends arrived to slay you. Probably just
killing time. I have helped and been helped by the other side on a few
occassions. We both recognized we were on the same quest and would
alternate the first attack on the creature, then both of us kill it. Was
fun but strange to help, yet be unable to communicate except to bow and
wave.
> I mean, what's going on here? The guys an enemy isn't he? Why help me?
Some people are just helpful, even if you play on the other side. My orc
shaman has been helped by 2 seperate draenei hunters in the past 2 days.
First, 2 of us were questing in Arathi, doing the quests where we go to
Stromgarde. I see a hunter that had gotten mobbed(I think respawns popped
while it was fighting other mobs) so I just chain lightning'ed then went on
my way. Well, eventually I get to the mob I gotta kill, but the hunter is
already there killing them, so I sit down, and figure I'll wait for the
respawn. Hunter sits down too, when the mobs respawn it waits for me to tag
them, then helps kill them. I thank em, then we both leave the keep. I go
off hunting some other quest mob in the same place, running around, I find
the mob and see the hunter's fighting it, so I go over, earth shock the mob,
then sit down to wait on the respawn. Hunter again sits down and waits with
me, and the mob respawns. Problem is...it didn't respawn in the same place.
I could target it, but not see it anywhere. Me and the hunter both look
around, but no luck, then the hunter runs off, I assume cause it figured
it'd been nice enough and was ready to get back to it's questing. So then
another horde dude comes over, also looking for the same mob. I ask him if
he wants to group so we can find it together and not have to wait on a
respawn if one of us finds it first. He says no, and keeps looking around
for it as well. Then, the ally hunter comes BACK, /beckons me, so I follow
it, and it leads me to the quest mob. I kill it, thank and salute the
hunter, then it waves, mounts up, and rides off. So, even though the other
player was from the opposing faction, it not only helped me more than that
dude my own faction cared to, it actually went out of it's way to help.
Then the next day, I'm out in STV, and I have to kill some elite tiger. I
get there, and find a different draenai hunter looting it's corpse. So, I
drop my totems, make sure all my buffs are up, and wait on the respawn. Now,
I'm lvl 41, and the mob is a 43 elite, but I'm all decked out in heirlooms,
got crusader chant on my weapon, etc, so I figure what the heck, I'll see if
I'm strong enough to kill it. The elite respawns, I attack it, and the fight
is close, but I'm winning. Unfortunately, I didn't realize the boss summons
adds when it's health gets low, so all of a sudden, I'm fighting 3 mobs, one
of whom is elite, and my health is just dropping too fast(I kept healing
myself, but that meant I wasn't damaging the mobs, and eventually my mana
was gonna run out) then the hunter comes back, kills the adds, and without
the adds on me, I'm able to kill the elite and complete my quest.
I've done it as well before on my warlock. Yeah, I do WG and run BGs, I've
gotten my For the Horde achievement and have over 17k HKs right now, and if
the other faction comes into our cities I'll be all over em. But at the same
time, if I'm just out questing somewhere and see someone getting overwhelmed
with enemies, if they're not flagged I'll help out sometimes.

Once I experienced an alliance priest helping me kill the leader of the
pirates south of Ratchet. He just pointed at a mob and I attacked and he
killed it. He was PvP flagged as well. He might just be helping out, and
the reason he is flagged is possibly due to having to defend himself
against horde NPC's in Barrens.

I do that occasionally to Alliance (I'm Horde) if I'm bored, or in a
helpful mood. Sometimes just to freak them out (though I'm not malicious
and won't steal their kills) or be silly. Other times I try to assist if
it looks like they're in danger of being overwhelmed.
A few times I've even ended up co-operating with random Alliance using
macros to communicate. I had a lot of fun with a Nelf killing pirates in
Tanaris once. I helped them kill the head pirate (I forget the name),
then they helped me. Afterwards we went round robin on a whole bunch of
other pirates to farm faction.
Outside Tabetha's hut is where I've probably helped and been helped by
Alliance more than any other place. There are a few quests that summon
mobs there, and they can be hard to solo at the right level.
I've even had a couple Alliance switch to a Horde toon and whisper me
thanks. Not necessary, but most welcome :-) I figure it's good karma I'm
spreading, and it might make it less likely for me to get ganked when I
return flagged from BGs while out in the field - I _really_ hate people
doing that to me!
I'll usually only kill on sight known jerks and those obviously
permanently flagged, well and of course I'll defend myself if able.

Oh, and I just remembered the time I stumbled across an Alliance fishing
in Orgrimmar. He was half hidden by the waterfall in the Valley of
Honour. At first he seemed startled by my presence, but once I sat down
and started fishing too, he resumed his search for the elusive Old
Crafty. I like to think I was 'cover' for his activity and helped him
evade those more than willing to beat on him.
That said - if he'd been doing ANYTHING even slightly hostile looking
I'd have ganked his arse. I'm real protective of my capital.
> I'll usually only kill on sight known jerks and those obviously

Yeah, same here. I defend myself, other Horde players, and Horde NPCs if I
see allies attacking them. Otherwise, when I'm out "in the wild" as it were,
I generally ignore even flagged allies unless I recognize the name as a
regular douchebag that I come across a lot.
Beyond that, I don't have any real issues with the other side, if I'm not in
a BG or WG, they're just another player to me, and I'm even willing to lend
a hand if it looks like they're in trouble.
Just because blizzard tries to seperate people doesn't mean the players
agree.

Yeah, sometimes people try to be helpful
Yeah, I don't like beating on fishermen, either. Fishermen ought to be
left in peace.
Flower pickers and miners, though, are taking nodes that rightly belong
to my side!

Yea - I had a horde PvP try to lure me into fight...I don't PvP and was
minding my own business on a quest. Right outside the entrance to
Bounty I was sitting - (eating and drinking) when a pvp flagged level 28
horde appeared and stood over me. I was level 40 mage and was not
flagged so I ignored. He started spitting on me and taunting me, but I
kept ignoring. He started really pissing me off, but then I got to
thinking why would a level 28 try to egg me into pvp mode when he knew
I'd destroy him? I got up and looked around and literally hiding behind
a tree a bit away was a flagged pvp level 80 blood elf. Turns out they
are partied together and the lowbie was trying to get me to fight him
and if I turned, the level 80 would finish me off in a second...That's
real scum. So they realized I caught on and the 80 comes over and
taunts me. I ignore, leave and start questing and they follow me. I'm
trying to kill a leopard and they keep jumping in front of me or get by
what I'm trying to kill so I accidentally hit them and change my flag.
They knew that as a mage if I used any AOE spells, blizzard or freeze
they would get hit. I almost died because my hands were tied. They
could see this and continued to taunt and laugh at me for almost getting
killed. I had to port out...I mean , I'm all for fun but this went on
for 15 minutes and really was ruining the game for me that night...If it
wasn't so late that night I would have called in some guildies to help
me out...
> So they realized I caught on and the 80 comes over and taunts me. I

No they wouldn't. AoE doesn't hit flagged players unless you're already
flagged when you do it. I was flagged in Booty Bay once(flagged friend of
mine was killing guards for rep and some ally warlock jumped him, so I
killed the lock), then another warlock, non-flagged, on the higher level
cast Rain of Fire on me and my friend...didn't flag him, didn't hit us.
After tonight, it's THREE drainei hunters. More questing in STV, fighting
mobs, some drainei runs by and stops to shoot the mobs I'm fighting. Wasn't
as big a help as the other 2 hunters were(the mobs weren't dangerous, I was
able to handle em fine on my own) but still nice.
They really should have an interface option to prevent non-flagged
players attacking other players (or player controlled mobs) so that you
need to flag yourself before you attack. It would prevent a lot of
griefing like this.

Well, they still were trying to set me up from the start, hiding behind
a tree....sheesh. The only reason I saw him was that I have those
status indicators (or whatever they are called) turned on over the toons
players (except mine).
BTW, does anyone else have those turned on? I've found I can't live
without them. They help me see around corners, behind and under things
so I have a heads up before I go around a corner... They are also handy
for picking out a particular target in a crowd as you only need to click
the bar to select that toon. Very handy when in a group and your
fighting a large mob, and you want to target a particular enemy....
It's interesting. Most people here seem to think he was helping you.
Had he not been flagged, I might have agreed with them. But I take a
darker view, especially if he was PvP flagged on a PvE server, and
wonder if he was trying to get you to flag, so he could kill you.
During the Scourge event, my Prot Paladin loved grinding those Undead
mobs for kicks. One time I was with a Warlock friend, trying to get
the Warlock set from the Elites. We'd been there for a while - over an
hour anyway - and had just started on an Elite when about six Alliance
showed up. They must have taken umbrage that we dare kill "their"
Elites (whom we fought to), because they all suddenly flagged (I'm on
a PvE server) and came up and stood right on top of me.
"Well, that's it. I'm dead," I thought, thinking my Consecration was
going to flag me. However, I did not realize then that unless you
specifically target an enemy player, your AoE spells will not flag
you. Obviously they did not realize that either. And actually I don't
think most people do, which is why I tend to think that Mage was
trying to trick you.
When my Paladin was in his 50s, he liked to AoE grind the mobs at
Sorrow Hill. One time a flagged Alliance came, stood beside me and
"helped" me fight the mobs. Well, when I AoE grind, I Tab target,
Judge, Tab target, Judge. I wondered if, since she was flagged, the
game would now consider her an "NPC enemy", and I would find myself
Tab targetting to her, auto-attacking, and flagging myself. So the
whole time this Shaman was "helping" me I couldn't use Tab at all, and
had to focus on one mob. It was most annoying.

Nameplates... I keep only the player ones on. That makes it really
obvious when there's a player around and doesn't clutter the screen
with NPC names. The tradeoff, of course, is that when you're looking
for a specific name in a new area, it might be a smidge harder to
find. In the end, I think it makes you more aware... you get used
seeing movement & models instead of red or green names over their
heads.
Another possibility is that you inadvertantly did something to another
of his characters or wandered to close to "his territory". That's
probably more likely than "random player follows you for 20 min. for
no reason".
I have a guildmate who's playing her first character and she
frequently gets killed by opposing players... upon listening to her
complain about it I suggested that perhaps it's something she's
doing. (Not to say that there aren't days of bad luck when you just
happen to be slaughtered by marauders... but those are rare in my
experience.)
She said, "No! I didn't do anything hostile at all! I even waved and
danced with them them." Now, what would a Cat do if a Mouse waved &
danced at him? Often these emotes are interpreted as taunting.
I find that if I don't want trouble, the best emote is /salute
That's what I was thinking.
I have had folks of the hostile persuasion interfere in my peaceful
activities in such a way that it was obvious their intent was to provoke
me into doing something rash or careless - so that I would become
killable.
I enjoy frustrating them. My concentration is good and my patience is
long. If it looks like I have picked up a tenacious pest that is making
a game of bedeviling me, I make a game of not letting them get to me.
I try to waste their time and tire them as much as possible. Or I try
to kite them toward local guards or friendly players.
If I am playing a male toon and my tormentor is also playing a male
toon, I stop, strip of all my armor, and start dancing with them. I
emote /hug, kiss, tickle, pet ceaselessly and /flirt. That usually
drives them away immediately. They RUN.
> I find that if I don't want trouble, the best emote is /salute
I concur.

Hahahaaa!
While I don't follow people around, if I'm in a quest area and I see
another player getting overwhelmed, I'll usually help. An 80 Holy
Pally can do a huge amount of damage to Old World mobs by just kicking
off a Consecrate as he runs by, ofter more than enough to save a low
level player's bacon.
I don't care which faction they're with.

Well, the OP didn't mention the mage standing close to his mobs or anything,
just that it was following him around attacking his mobs.
Did he go back and skin the corpses afterwards?

When those Alliance didn't get me to flag, what they did do instead
was have the Rogue aggro one, bring it over to me so it did get caught
in my Consecration, then Vanish, so now I was fighting two Elites.
They were casters and hard to fight as a Prot Pally with no healer. I
very nearly died. The Alliance then looted the corpse that I
essentially killed for them.
You're right about what the OP said; I guess after a while, one just
grows cynical.

No, they were humanoid bristlebacks and not skinnable. He was just a
pain in the arse.

Well, the mage very well may have been trying something, just wasn't
anything specifically to imply that that was the case in the OP. Certainly
won't dismiss it is as a possibility, though.

Well, the mage very well may have been trying something, just wasn't
Tabethas hut used to be a place where mages from both factions helped each
other with their class quest.
IIRC the snake trap trick was reportable as harrasment on a PvE server. A
level 80 hunter killed me (40) that way in front of SM. Reported him, build
a hord character and informed him. Oh, did he start to whine and beg ^^.
Bonne année à vous très chère demoiselle!
